SebastianLeeDanzig wrote:Mother Krause's Journey to Happiness (1929) - 9/10. Classic silent movie about proletarian life in Weimar Republic era Berlin, conceived as a tribute to the work and life of legendary painter/caricaturist/photographer Heinrich Zille. This is invaluable shit if you're remotely interested in that time in history and/or vintage cinema.

Buttnoid, check that out if you have a chance!

The Postman (1997) - 5/10. I actually like Waterworld so I thought I'd give this a chance too, but it's definitely the worse of Kevin Costner's flopped post-apocalyptic epics.
I'll check it out. Is it available on DVD in the US or do I have to import it?

I like Waterworld as well, but I have yet to see the new extended cut they put out a few years ago. I've never seen The Postman.

TravisBicklesMohawk wrote:China Girl 9/10 Abel Ferrara's Romeo and Juliet story between an Italian-American boy and a Chinese-American girl. About as bloody as you've come to expect from Ferrara, but there's also an amazingly tender love story in this film. Great movie and glad to see it hasn't aged badly at all since the first time I saw it.
Is this playing on cable this month? I've always wanted to see it but it's kind of hard to find.

Actually, I'm not sure it's available on DVD anywhere. You may have to go illegal, just like the commie swine it portrays.

Le chant des mariées / The Wedding Song (2008) - 9/10.

Amazing picture about a girl friendship between a Sephardi Jew and a Muslim against the backdrop of 1942 Nazi-occupied French Tunisia. Depicts the Maghrebian Arab-Jew-colonialist relationship perfectly and still leaves room for some modern foreshadowing. It's beautifully shot and absolutely heart-wrenching without ever being corny. But most importantly, there's explicit full frontal nudity and Lizzie Brocheré (chick from American Horror Story: Asylum) acts her ass off, which is fucking hot in it.

Jeremy Renner was at the top of his game. Very good movie. Heard about the film over the weekend and found it at Redbox. Read the film barely made money through ticket sales. Damn shame.
Fine story about real life events. Go watch it!!!

Life Itself 7.5/10.

This is the Roger Ebert documentary. Pretty interesting portrait of the man. Showed his determination throughout all of his medical problems. His wife was a total sweetheart too. The Siskel and Ebert stuff was interesting (not one mention of Roeper though...hmm) his early life was interesting too. Only reason I didn't rate it higher was there was some boring filler in the middle.

Tapeheads (1988) - what a bizarre movie. the producers, director, actors and financiers must've been on LSD. Starring John Cusak, Tim Robbins, Jello Biafra, Martha Quinn, the Nuge, Lyle Alzado, Weird Al just to name a few. I think it was take off of MTV, Night Flight and whatever your basic cable independent station was doing with technology on a random Saturday. Two security guards make their own videos and somehow catch the President in some naughty shenanigans. Only weirder. 2/10

Dumbo 9/10.

They don't make 'em like this anymore. Two things:

The pink elephants on parade segment is one of the trippiest things I have seen. It is like an acid segment, very ahead of its time for 1941.

The black crowes with their stereotypical black people voices and jive talking is so racist. If that came out today, people would flip out and the movie would probably be pulled.

The Tin Drum (1979) - 8/10. Rewatched that yesterday over Günter Grass croaking. Hadn't seen it since I was a kid, it's a lot weirder and cooler than I remembered.

Warm Bodies (2013) - 7/10. I guess you could call it a zombie rom-com or something. Surprisingly good considering how played-out this shit is by now.
