Yep. Good movie. Made even better after I read an interview with the filmmaker and found out the motives behind Combo's actions, beliefs and source of his hatred.Woosh wrote:This is England: 7/10 the child actor was amazing. told a good story, even if it's a sad one.

The Fulci movie? or the 1953 Japanese one?
If it's the Fulci, it's one of my favorites. City of the Living Dead (aka Gates of Hell) has one of my favorite scores as well.
I first saw it under the Gates Of Hell title when I was a kid, and rented it from a local video store. It was what got me into Lucio Fulci.

Just thought I would add this: for the Boardwalk Empire fans of the board who happen to read this thread as well, Stephen Graham (Al Capone) has a starring role in This Is England, too. And between those two roles, I think he has got the "unhinged borderline madman" type pretty well down pat.

Here it is. Read the back story that applies to Combo...it's about half way down. Great stuff:

Heavy Metal 2000 (5/10)
Had its moments. The soundtrack was a little spotty too.
Stand Alone Complex: Solid State Society (8/10)
While not as awesome as the series, (One of the best shows in television history) it still provides quite the punch. If you're into dystopian Sci-Fi and Government cover-ups, watch this. As well as the two seasons of Stand Alone Complex.

Thanks, John Simon. You were on the ball with providing that link and the article was on point, as well.
I knew that about Stephen Graham (Combo), but thought it was interesting that he used his own IRL story, in a sense, to inform that character. I actually want to see the This is England '86 and '88 series now. And now I read there's going to be a This is England '90 exploring the rave culture?! Coolness.
I watched a film called Dirty Girl on Netflix streaming today. I give it a 5.5/10. Average, leaning towards the good side of things.
I also watched the Amanda Seyfried-starring Lovelace. I think I'll give that one a 4/10. It was like a clunkier, stupider Boogie Nights that purported to be the truth despite being a lot of lies. One would be better off to watch the Deep Throat documentary on Netflix and read Lovelace's Wikipedia entry. Or, like I said, if you want a dramatic look at porn in its heyday, just watch freaking Boogie Nights.

As a kid, I saw an avert in Fango where the girl was sitting in the truck with her guts coming out of her mouth and I was hooked. My older brother took me to see it at the theater. Liked it a bit better back when I was 11
Day of the Dead remake - 1/10. What a total piece of shite. There's better sfx in an episode of the Walking Dead. Should have known a movie starring that knob host of AGT would be terrible. Bout like watching a mainstream movie starring a rapper.

I agree that this is a good film, and for folks with Netflix streaming access, it's currently available if you want to watch it. As is "This is England", the movie I was talking about a few posts ago.

Super. Starring Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, and Kevin Bacon.
8.5/10 Great movie, and a different take on super hero movies. All the actors were great especially Ellen Page and Kevin Bacon. Pretty funny and dark.

Crystal Fairy & the Magical Cactus and 2012 - 5/10. It's another weird Michael Cera doing drugs in Central America. At first I thought I'd seen it before, but that one was Magic Magic. Gabby Hoffman, the little girl from Field of Dreams, spends a good bit of time very naked, with hairy pits and HMZ approved bush.
Homefront - 6/10. Jason Statham as a retired cop, James Franco as the meth kingpin. Toss in a biker gang with a father and son team, you've got Sons of Anarchy meets Breaking Bad. Kinda.
Poseidon Adventure (original) - 10/10. My favorite disaster movie. Cruise ship rolls over, and the surviving passengers navigate through an upside down ship to reach the hull. Follow that one with...
Beyond the Poseidon Adventure - 6/10. Telly Savalas, Michael Caine and Sally Field go into the freshly wrecked Poseidon to salvage.

Newlyweds 7/10
(Ed Burns movie)
Film only cost $9,000 to make.
I respect Ed Burns as a writer/director. Why Hollywood won't embrace him for the talents he possesses is a mystery.
Unsure if he is content with indie films or if the Movie Studios are not about to take a chance on him.
