Bright Lights, Big City (1988) - 6/10
Loved the book, but unfortunately the movie doesn't do a good job conveying its vibe at all. Michael J. Fox was really miscast here. It's still not terrible, but should have been so much better.

"This is the End" - 8/10
Friggin' hilarious. That is all. No need to stay after the credits though, as there's no tag.
"What Maisie Knew" - 8/10
Terrific drama about a divorced couple and its child caught in the middle. One of the most fucked up movies about divorce since "Kramer vs. Kramer."
"Shadow Dancer" - 6/10
Solid drama with Clive Owen, Andrea Riseborough and Gillian Anderson about an MI5 agent that gets entangled with an IRA bomber turned informant.

The Shunning.
A Hallmark Channel flick. 'Nuff said.
Right before that I watched "What Dreams May Come" 1998 starring Robin Williams on NF streaming. It was OK. The aforementioned movie was a recommendation afterwards. Bastards.

Man of Steel
I thought it was awesome. If you are going to see this expecting it to be like the Christopher Reeves version, you are going to be disappointed. The negative reviews I've read all seem to be expecting that version of superman. They barely showed anything in the trailers for this which was nice for a change. There is none stop action...maybe a little light on character development, but over all, a great superhero/action flick.

Saw the poster and it seemed like a probably lunkheaded but at least interesting attempt at a 2nd-rate Twilight Zone episode. Sorry to hear it's just another Panic Room rip off.

Star Trek 2013 - I'll give it a 7.5
Way better than the first one, and the cast/chemistry is getting better.
But Christ these movies miss the fucking point. Too much fighting.
How many punches did Spock throw in the original 6 movies? Not fucking one. I think Kirk had two fistfights in those films, and one was with himself!
In these movies each main character gets about 4 fistfights apiece, and you can't go 10 minutes without some asshole clinging to the edge of something. And the space scenes are more like Star Wars dogfights.
In Star Trek the ships are supposed to be huge and laborious, like battleships. The battles are about strategy, not swiftness. I really wish they'd tone this shit down for these movies because there really is a good foundation there with the new actors and classic characters. And give Bones something to fucking do.
That being said I think Abrams is a GREAT choice for the new Star Wars movies, because that shit IS much of what those movies were about. But these fucking Star Trek movies could stand to be a bit more cerebral.

Bitter Moon (1992) - 7/10
Not the best Polanski and dragging as fuck, but really depressing and negative, thus pretty awesome for a romantic fag fest. Emmanuelle Seigner is hot in it. Also, a sexual deviant. It totally helps the story, or something. If you love Titanic, are a pervert, and hate cripples, this is your movie.

Re: Rate the last movie you saw
Man of Steel (2013) : the first hour and twenty minutes - 3/10. Visually stunning but what a disjointed movie. Flash backs, fast forwards, multiple times...it was all over the place. They tried to cram a LOT of backstory in there, which is what I liked about the last reboot - it didn't and assumed everyone knew the backstory. The last 30min were pretty cool, 7/10. Tons of action, which was what Superman Returns lacked.
The guy playing Superman/Clark def looked the part (although I liked Routh more in the role) and Zod was pretty much an alien version of the way the guy acts on Boardwalk Empire (fairly badass)...but the iconic uniform, much like in the current DC 52 universe looks like crap compared to the old one. Relied way to much on CGI, more than Green Lantern and Avengers. I wanted to like this way more than I actually did - 5/10 overall. Fun to watch but not one that I'll rush to dub a dvd-r copy of.

Man of Steel - 9/10
Man of Steel is exactly what I wanted to see: Superman being Superman. For the first time ever, you the sense of just how powerful this guy is, and they don't fall back on the old "kryptonite" standby to give him a weakness/vulnerability. The movie is more about him learning to become Superman in a "Batman Begins" vein, and less "Here I come to save the day!"
A few story/pacing missteps, but overall I fucking loved it. Visually, this movie is damn near perfect...I can't think of a thing I'd change.

Man of Steel: 6.5/10
It was much better than that god-awful Brandon Routh movie, but far from the 1978 Superman, which I still think stands up pretty well.
A couple of things:
My biggest problem was I thought General Zod actually had valid points for what he was trying to do, which was to basically survive and also save his people from total extinction, but much like the dad in The Purge (and I can't believe I'm actually using that movie as a reference) they made him out to look like a total douche. After basically yelling at the school committee (or whatever the hell that panel was) for putting their planet on the verge of self-destruction Jor-el can't seem to understand Zod's need for immediate action and the hostile takeover. I thought they clock was ticking? So what are they waiting for? Old age? Both agree the planet is fucked, so why not join forces and actually do something about it, as Zod suggests? (Kinda like Scott Glenn's pitch to Mel Gibson in The River, it just made sense).
But no, Jor-el can't deal with Zod's "self-serving" ego. So he opts to just save his own son instead... And Zod's the asshole?
Probably would have worked better if done less in flashback and bouncing back and forth and was more chronological.
And lastly, the entire city was pretty much leveled after this battle.
Where they hell were they going to have this basketball game the guy had tickets too?

Jor El believed that their system of growing everyone in a vat to fill particular roles, Brave New World style, was what lead them down the road to ruin and he proposed scrapping their current system in favor of the old way: fucking, getting knocked up and letting the kid pick his own destiny. Zod wanted to stick with the same old thing, only with him as the boss. He considered Jor El's idea of natural reproduction and self determination abomination and heresy.Hurls34 wrote:Man of Steel: 6.5/10

I had NO IDEA it was filmed at Ga Tech! The entire movie was basically filmed in the Clough building. That is so crazy. Anyway, even though Vince Vaughn plays like the same character in every movie, I like it. It is kind of what you come to expect. Really funny and well done.
