"White Boy Rick" - 5.5/10

Man, talk about a great movie trailer with sizzle that betrays the actual movie. This turned out to be a bit different than the vibe I expected based on the trailer. Still, lightweight and kind of disjointed in connecting its storytelling dots, the movie ultimately just didn't really deliver.

The Big Short(2015) Christian Bale, Brad Pitt, Ryan Gosling, Steve Carell, Selena Gomez, Margot Robbie, Marissa Tomei. Good movie but they made the financial crisis look like a much bigger deal that it was, it was far from the apocalypse. 8/10

Racer and the Jailbird(2017) Adèle Exarchopoulos, man that chick is so hot she looks like she's always asking for it, plenty of nude scenes once again 8/10

Continuing to try to take advantage of my MoviePass until it officially dies. Put to 41 movies since December. This movie was surprisingly dull. Had some nice kills and gore but the story was severely lacking. It got about 2/3rds through and I was ready for it to be done.

I'm not a big fan of movies based on some type of shtick. It took me a while to get into how the story was unfolding. The movie unfolds primarily through a computer screen. Now that I think about it, if it was filmed in a standard manner, it'd probably be another Julia Roberts/Liam Neeson missing child movie that goes straight to video. Worth catching if you can get past the story telling device.

"A Simple Favor" - 8/10

This movie is great. Deliciously dark fun. Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively have some terrific chemistry that plays to their acting strengths, and this is definitely the summer of Henry Golding ("Crazy Rich Asians"). If you're looking for something to see this weekend, this is a good bet.

Searching 8/10. I was expecting crap and I thought it was great and the way they shot it was great, so much more inventive than unfriended.

White Boy Rick 8/10. Really liked it. The kid playing Rick was fantastic.

Predator - 1/10 Just awful. I thought about walking out. Terrible effects and horrible dialogue. Shitty acting, I mean really shitty. Stupid story. I didn't think there could be a worse movie than Rampage, but this is it.

"The Predator" - 5/10

Man, this was a bit of a mess. Partially entertaining in spots, but really lightweight. It actually felt more like a Terminator movie than an alien blockbuster but with no sense of any big stakes. Decidedly low-fi in terms of the CG as well, almost like a throwback kind of '90s movie with Shane Black's penchant for one-liners.

But how the fuck is Thomas Jane literally a throwaway actor in this movie when ten years ago he probably would have been the star? Also, Jacob Tremblay, a child actor with awards potential since "Room" ends up in a pretty uninspired kid role in this. So overall, a misfire.

"Fahrenheit 11/9" - 8/10

Very compelling. Eye-opening in some unexpected ways, less shocking in others. Despite the title, it's less about Trump himself and more about other aspects of American life which sort of help the movie paint a broader picture of where the country is.

"A Star is Born" - 8/10

Really good. Great performances from the whole cast, especially Gaga and Bradley Cooper, and an assured touch as director by Cooper. The first half is definitely better than the second half, but I think that's because the movie goes for the pop music element that Gaga fans are more familiar with.
