I don't know if I've said this before (probably), but one of the worst things about Trump is the fact that he is a specific kind of bell that can't be unrung. I was talking to a (semi) Trump supporter yesterday and one thing that has never entered their heads is this: Trump is doing what he is doing for their side of the partisan aisle at this moment... the blatant lying, the open manipulation, buffaloing his people into lying to protect him, etc., and that's great for them... for now. The problem with that is he is really not all that good at it. Everybody sees very clearly what he's doing, he has no real ability to disguise it. Because he's not a convincing liar and he leaves too many loose ends.

And here is what should terrify them and everybody else for that matter: There will be somebody coming along after him and taking his tactics as a starting point... and doing it more effectively. Maybe for the LEFTIST side of things and probably for more specific and focused self-interests. Trump has basically blazed a trail for THE MOST unscrupulous kind of megalomaniac to take the baton from him and run with it. Just imagine if it was somebody less repugnant and laughable in presentation, like an Obama or a Trudeau, but with Trump's aspirations toward establishing an American autocracy. Now that he's shown this kind of angle is a possibility, the future is a blank canvas for some other Pied Piper of the easily duped. A demographic that now seems far larger than anybody could have imagined in past eras.

Most Trump critics don't think beyond the simple goal of getting rid of him and think that we'll just magically go right back to normal once he's gone. I have a sinking feeling we're never going to get back there again, even after we rid ourselves of this one person. The problem has never been just that one person. There's a plague that's out of hand and from what I see around me, it's getting worse every day.

Trump is just that terrible bell that was waiting to be rung. Unringing it will be far harder than just shooing him away.
