Orcas Have Had Enough!

Post by GreatWhiteSnake »

This has been happening with some regularity lately. I think our marine mammal friends are sick and tired of the growing garbage patch...https://www.cnn.com/2023/06/24/sport/oc ... index.html

As much as I support the whales, it will probably only lead to whalers scouting the areas and killing them.

Humans gonna human.

Exactly this. It's not like we're just going to stay out of the water.

We have no business being in the water anyway.

I saw on the news the 19 year old was a Rubik’s Cube nerd who took one with him to solve while his daddy filmed it. You get what you fucking deserve.

Otters have joined with the Orcas and also say ENOUGH!!

Aggressive sea otter still evading capture in Santa Cruz
The sea otter has been aggressively approaching beach-goers and biting surfboards, officials said.

After nearly two weeks of trying to capture an unusually aggressive sea otter in Santa Cruz, wildlife officials have still had no success, according to a statement the California Department of Fish and Wildlife released Friday.

The 5-year-old female sea otter has been “aggressively approaching people and biting surfboards,” the statement said, referring to a series of bellicose attacks this month. In at least one incident documented on video, the otter scared a surfer off a board and attempted to cart it away.

Deemed a public safety risk, the sea otter has managed to evade wildlife biologists who tagged her with a radio transmitter and are actively monitoring her movements, the statement said. Since July 2, experts trained in such captures have been attempting to safely catch the animal, but a combination of factors including poor underwater visibility and the otter’s wariness of nets have hobbled their efforts. Officials said it may take days or weeks to seize the animal.

Upon her capture, the sea otter will be transported to the Monterey Bay Aquarium to undergo a health assessment and to locate a long-term home in a zoo or aquarium. Officials said they are not considering euthanasia.

“Although this otter was born in an animal care facility, she was raised by her mother with minimal human contact,” said Jess Fuji, the sea otter program manager with the Monterey Aquarium, in the statement. “When she was released, she was monitored by wildlife biologists. This otter behaved like a typical otter in the wild for over a year before interactions with people began.”

This sea otter exhibited similar “unusual behavior” in September 2022, but biologists were able to quell it by hazing the animal – using intimidation or scare tactics to divert her to another area. They say the method had no success this time around. Experts do not yet know what caused the animal’s combativeness, though Fuji said it could be fueled by hormonal surges, or from being fed by humans.

Wildlife officials are urging people to avoid approaching sea otters and to report human-sea otter interactions to the Monterey Bay Aquarium at (831) 648-4840.
