In the house I grew up in we were in a Tom Brokaw NBC -lead sanctuary. Once in a blue moon the television would get flipped over to David Brinkley/John Chancellor on CBS and it was like the sky was falling in the house. To this day my mom and dad still watched the local NBC affiliate. You could ask them to change the channel to the “other news“And they refused to change the channel due to the old school by us. Which net work was on the TV in your house growing up?

The town I grew up in only got one channel. And it was a CBS affiliate. Captain Kangaroo, Gunsmoke and the Moon Landing baby...

I don't remember a specific channel. Typical 80s TV with the three networks, PBS, and a couple of UHF stations. My dad was a big sports fan so that was on.

My step dad always had The History Channel on, but this was back when it was still actually about history and not just aliens and reality shows.

...but before it became the WW2/Hitler channel in the early 2000s? Travel really should rebrand itself as Teh Spooky Channel at this point, given all of the paranormal stuff they seem to show at any arbitrary point in the day.

It was solidly the Hitler channel when I was most exposed to it.

My mother forces the other Hitler channel on me: Fox News. Every time she visits.

I don't recall my parents watching news too much. They probably just watched local news.

But I remember the Iran Hostage Situation. That's what they called it. A situation. It later became a crisis.
It was day 9, and I remember being horrified.
I didn't know what the "situation" was. Only that they had American hostages.
I asked my mom what they wanted, she said they wanted the Shah, who was in the US for medical treatment.
My 15 year old ass said to give him back, and she said we can't do that.

It would be years before I fully understood that whole "situation".

I was not forced anything. I DO remember watching all the 1970s classics that were favorites of my father: MASH, Bob Newhart, Barney Miller, All In The Family, Mary Tyler Moore, Chico and the Man, and all the variety shows of the time: Sonny and Cher, Donny and Marie, The Captain and Tenille, Laugh In.

As a kid, I recall my grandfather eating dinner to Walter Cronkite.
