Cheers was the best. Just simplicity at its finest--dumb guys bullshitting in a bar and women who are smarter than them. THAT. IS. THE FORMULA.

Every guy on that show was dumb as bricks. Frasier, the intellectual, may have been the dumbest guy of all. The wisest? Perhaps Woody, the G-rated Midnight Cowboy. Or Coach, who had the wisdom of a dying man.

Cheers explored these ironies in what Gene Simmons (of Kiss) would call a "meat and potatoes" way. No nonsense. Carla wouldn't have it.

He was generally a fan of 80s US hardcore and noisier indie bands. I remember him being mentioned in the NME as going to a few club shows in London.

One of my friends in the early 90s said it was one of his life's ambitions to be able walk into his local pub and have his name called out in welcome. In hindsight that's an ambition to have chronic alcoholism but Norm made it look a lot more fun.
