Ever deal with asshole landlords?

Post by Don't Damn Me »

I've been in my building for 24 years. The elderly owner has three daughters one of whom handled everything reasonably well. With modest rent increases. So for a while there I was paying 300 less than a new tenant coming into the same unit. Then she started complaining to me, "you're paying less than anybody else here". But she retired and her sister who is probably about 70 decided she wants to be involved in the family business. She hired a Chinese management company while she calls the shots. She is a straight up c***. My refrigerator broke down and she informs me the California law no longer requires landlords to provide ovens or refrigerators. I explained to her that may be but it is still included in my lease. Words back and forth for a month before I hit up her sister that retired who said "I told her you get a refrigerator" and then they would send rent increase letters a week into the 30 day notice they're supposed to give. For The Last 5 Years my rent has been hiked the maximum 10%. It's gone up over 500 bucks in 3 years. They just raised it again, 135 bucks so I decided I wanted to get s*** fixed around here. They put in this toilet 3 years ago and it always had problems flushing. They sent out two different maintenance guys on two different occasions both of them said they couldn't fix it. I'm pretty sure they just didn't want to put their hand in s***. Which is reasonable. So that bitch told me I could put my hands in there and there's this screen that I would just have to scratch off and it fucking worked. But it was a month without a working toilet and my AC went down too. So my girlfriend at the time stopped coming around, of course. The toilet was badly stained from not being flushed for a month but stupid me thinking I can fly under the radar and avoid a rent increase didn't demand to have it replaced. Well now I am. So they sent out one of those same maintenance guys that couldn't fix it before. The dude works on it like 90 minutes and gets so clean it looks new. But the next day that thing stops up. I had him fix the tub that doesn't drain and the next day it wouldn't drain fast again. I've got cabinets and drawers that are probably 40 years old. The drawers often come apart. And cabinets don't close. And that bitch out right they're not going to replace it. My oven is literally rusted out there are holes on the top surface of it. They said they would look for an identical top. I f***** up renting all these years and now I am firmly at home here. But these Jack offs will not hesitate to f*** with me or throw me to the wolves. And this is just some of this s***. Anybody got anything that compares?

10% per year? Or 10% over 5 years?

Glad to see the online dating ended up working for you. I recall you posting pictures here asking for advise about which one to use for your dating profile.

10% a year. The laws do not favor tenants in California

Oh yeah, after having a crappy car for years my new Honda Civic gave me a boatload of confidence. Although the girlfriend I mentioned here I met thru mutual friends. And just by chance her ex-husband was a member of a pretty famous Christian metal band. One of the few I didn't listen to. I always loved stryper and Bloodgood thar was about it

You can buy a new toilet for a little over a hundred bucks. Simplest item to install, and I'm not a plumber at all.

Would it have to come out of your pocket? Probably. But I'm not shitting in a bucket for a month and losing a girlfriend over it.

Find yourself an attorney. Some bigger cities have departments that will deal with the landlord on your behalf.

Exactly. They think they are in for a windfall. But they've had 24 years of not having to renovate this apartment. Plus this identical unit downstairs has been vacant for over a month. They don't take that s*** into consideration. F****** assholes

I have been in the rental business for 30 yrs and have never heard of landlords not repairing or replacing faulty appliances.
Cabinets, yea. Always seems to be repair/paint.
I have never worked in California tho.
Have you read through your original lease?

Oh I didn't lose her over that. But she wasn't too keen on coming over with no AC or Dependable toilet. I totally understood.
I would love to take them to court. I'm not sure exactly what I could hold them liable for, ultimately there are just cheap. And I know they have lawyers.

Oh yeah that original lease is my lifesaver. And they're so incompetent. After the lease got me that refrigerator they tried to withhold they sent me a new lease I never f****** signed it and those half asses never followed up. But yeah they were quick to tell me that California law was changed and it no longer have to provide refrigerator stove and I think even AC. That's insanely rough on renters

I know nothing about California laws, but that seems insane.
Do you have central air or window ac?
How they can expect a resident to replace anything that increases the value of their property is insane, especially a central ac unit.

Have you read Mazda Mattley's guide for negotiating? He could probably negotiate with them so they would PAY YOU for the privilege to fix your toilet. He's that good.

Well you know it's the air conditioner that's installed beneath the window, I don't know if that qualifies as Central air. But it reaches my bedroom so that's good.

But this location it's kind of unique. It's parallel to the freeway. In California rent is generally higher the closer you are to a freeway entrance. Some people go to work and drive 30 minutes in stop and go traffic before they get on the freeway. It's the only apartment building among houses. It's only 10 units. My buddy joked and called it ghetto Melrose Place. It's just a square with four studio units four one bedrooms and two two bedrooms, with a pool smack dab in the middle about 8 ft from front doors. With light traffic I can be in Hollywood in 20 minutes

Ya', I'd go the Mazda Mattley route and negotiate some upgrades. Heck, you can probably get a combined kitchen, dining room, and bedroom area.

When the bitch told you to go Shawshank Redemption with your hand to scratch off a filter to get the shitter to work I have a question.

Did you go to the store and buy some elbow length cleaning gloves first?

I hope you can get things working out for you. Between the rental prices and no a/c or toilet that sounds pretty rough.

They just suck! I've lived my apartment for 19 years, they have owned the building for 5 years. They won't fix anything unless it benefits them. There was mold on my bathroom ceiling. They sent some 70 year old dude and his 90 year old father to paint over it! That's not really how you fix mold!
But Don't Damn Me is his own worst enemy. You have to take a little responsibility when you live in a place for a long time.
How do you not have a working toilet for a few hours, let alone a month????

That is exactly what happened to my exes old place. It was a three bedroom and someone was moving out so he came down and painted the bathroom ceiling which had a lot of mold and drips. As if paint stops mold. It wasn't long until the mold came back. Luckily, my ex didn't stay there for much longer.

Mold needs oxygen to survive.
Surface mold can be killed by painting over it.

He's not checked CA laws at all. He's just listening to his property management company's bullshit.
There is no way any of that is okay.
A window unit is not central air!
I have live in my apartment for 19 years. I have replaced the large AC unit in the living room twice, because they just don't last that long. The previous owner probably would have done it, but we just did it ourselves because we wanted it immediately. The newest owner would not, so we did again. And I have installed a smaller one in my bedroom, because I want to be comfortable.
When you live in a place for a really long time, especially when you are still on the original lease, you trade doing a few things yourself for cheap rent!
He said he lived in this place for 24 years??? Hasn't paid for anything that improves his quality of life...like a working toilet??? That's insane!
No, you shouldn't have to...but if you want to continue living there, you probably need to.
