Anybody notice what happened with the Supreme Court Today?

Post by Crazy Levi »

The conservative majority decided that it is illegal to limit corporations' participation in politics.

That means there are no limits - none - on the amount of money a company can contribute to a political campaign.

It's pretty much the worst thing ever. We are all fucked.

Back in 1975 they made a movie about how the corporations would take over the world.

Where's Jon-a-thon when we need him?

Got me pegged wrong again. Selling out to big business is bullshit and shouldn't happen in either side's favor.

I am curious to know if there was this kind of outrage when the current administration gave GE billions for helping them win an election.

Well, GE may be dumping assloads of money INTO the administration (while receiving 'bailout' money) but the SEIU dumped millions in, AND coerced thier members to vote a certain way (the UAW is know for this too).

Not to mention, showing up like thugs at town hall meetings to intimidate people wanting to speak to (or yell at) their elected officials.

That's a joke.

Yes this ruling affects unions too, but they have a FRACTION of the money to spend on politics that big business has. If this ruling can't be tempered by legislation, the only ones who matter in politics any more are gigantic corporations. You'd have to be an idiot to not see it.

I heard a comment by a guy on the radio yesterday that I thought was pretty appropriate: "They may as well put the seats up on Ebay."

GE controls a lot of media outlets: NBC, Universal Studios, NBC Universal Television Group, NBC News, USA Network, Syfy, CNBC, MSNBC cable TV, NBC.com, MSNBC.com, iVillage, Telemundo Television Studios, The Weather Channel.

That's far worse than UAW or SEIU.

I've said in somewhat of jest before, but thinking more seriously now, that we are gonna have to start taking out some of these corporate execs French Revolution style, if we want to even try and stop them from just tightening the noose on our freedoms.

Cap enough of them, and they might start thinking that it's better to have $10 billion and live to spend it, than $20 billion prematurely passed on to your heirs.

Seriously, this was an evil working wrought today (well, yesterday). What do we do in the face of it? I don't really know.

They sold a majority share to Comcast a couple of months ago.

GE was still in control of NBC during the election and when they received the bailout. GE still retains a %49 stake.

GE will still benefit from the money the current admin gave them and, as a result, so will Comcast.

Not that it matters. All you are concerned about is "big labor" and their vast war chest of political money. Wal-Mart will cower in their shadow next election!

I am worried about things like voter intimidation. I am worried about things like using taxpayer money to prop up a business and then giving them stock in it.

Then why did you post it in a thread about the SCOTUS ruling? i know a lot of conservatives look at it as some sort of victory but I think that's assinine. They may as well fly a flag that says "My vote for sale to highest bidder".

YourMomma wrote:Because I had just witnessed liberals going nuts over the decision. Adding that to losing "Ted Kennedys" seat to a Republican and now their radio network ceasing to exist I was just commenting on what a tough week it has been for them.
Yeah, they're going nuts about it, and yeah it's been a bitch of a week for them, but I don't think this ruling affects liberals any more than it does conservatives. It just basically fucks all of us. I asked if you thought it was a partisan issue, as in "is it a victory for the GOP?" You seem to be fudging around it. Do you think it is or not? Personally, I think that anyone who thinks this is a victory must either be a CEO of a major corporation or a raging idiot.

I wouldn't call this one "so little". It's kind of a big deal.
