Jobless claims -- +382,000...

Post by Nevermind »

More Americans than forecast filed applications for unemployment benefits last week, adding to concern the labor market is slackening.

The weakest economic recovery since the Great Depression, but hey, let's give hime four more years.

LMFAO, sounds like you don't know what the numbers typically look like if you're making a big deal out of 382,000 weekly claims.

At this time in 1996 when Clinton was running for reelection, weekly initial claims were 352,000. Adjusted for population growth of 1%/year, that would be about 412,000 today. Weekly claims were in the mid-300s throughout 2005-2007 and only got under 300,000 a few times this past decade. A number in the low to mid-300s is typical when the economy is at full employment. The 4 week moving average was expected to be 373,000 and it's 377,750, that's why it's "worse than expected." It's not because that number is unusually high.

When Obama was inaugurated, weekly initial claims were 638,000. So there has been a huge improvement.

Unemployment Insurance Weekly Claims Data

claims filed Sept 18, 2004 (Bush running for re-election)?

341,000

claims filed filed 09/21/1996 (Clinton running for re-election?

352,000

claims filed filed 01/31/2009?

638,000

So far as "weekest recovery", not quite.

The first Bush recession ended Nov 2001. In the three years following the end of the recession, private sector employment increased .83%

Private sector employment:

Nov 2001: 109572
Nov 2004: 110490

The second Bush recession ended June 2009. In the three years following the end of the recession, private sector employment increased 2.97%

Private sector employment:

June 2009:107933
June 2012:111135

So the Obama recovery is far stronger than the Bush recovery. Don't forget that Romney is promising a return to what failed under Bush.
