Scott Brown's opposition to congressional health care legislation was the most important issue that fueled his U.S. Senate victory in Massachusetts, according to exit poll data collected following the Tuesday special election.

Fifty-two percent of Bay State voters who were surveyed as the polls closed said they opposed the federal health care reform measure and 42 percent said they cast their ballot to help stop President Obama from passing his chief domestic initiative.

"I'm not surprised it was the top issue, but I was surprised by how overwhelming an issue it was. It became a focal point for the frustration that has been brewing with voters, and it's a very personal issue that affects everyone," said Tony Fabrizio of Fabrizio, McLaughlin & Associates, a Republican firm that conducted the exit poll of 800 voters.

"A plurality of voters said their vote was to stop the president's health care plan — more than those saying it was a vote against his policies in general," Fabrizio wrote in a memo that accompanied his exit polling.

Sure, this is a message, but it isn't the klaxon that some people are claiming it to be.

Declarations like this are why I've mostly given up on debating what conservatives are left on this board. One dude wins in Mass and several libs admit they voted for him because they hate this sorry Senate bill, and the simplistic minds think, "Ah, this PROVES that most people DON'T want health care reform AT ALL! WE WUZ RIGHT!"

It's right up there with the way at least a dozen of them will get up one morning in the winter, see that it's cold outside and go, "So where's your global warming NOW?"

Nobody said people don't want it at all. Just sayin'.

So when people DO say "most people want this" and site MSNBC or NEW YORK TIMES polls, who are notorious for being left slanted news sources, it's acceptable?

Yes 52% OF voters questioned opposed it. And, since we're talking about how reputable polls are done, (asking potential voters since they are the ones who would actually influence elections) then I stand by what I said.

The voters in Massachusetts don't want this health care reform.

If you are comparing it to the presidential election, yes. That was nationwide. This election was in one state only. True, I think it does reflect a growing discontent in the country, but it is only one state. Again, one month ago if I'd said that the coming election in Mass would represent the pulse of the nation, you'd probably have said I was nuts.

I think you'll find that the majority of people want something done about the rising cost of healthcare and the lack of affordable options. It's just that the majority of people didn't like the current reform bill as constituted, mainly the fact that a lot of the good points were watered down and that a lot of pork was added in order to buy votes.

i think the majority wants the government officials to get over their highly convoluted ideals on what this country needs and pay attention to what the 'people' want.

if not,
republicans and democrats are both in danger of losing their seat.

During the Ice Age, there was more CO2 in the atmosphere than there is now.

There is, but our lovely EPA, who answers to nobody, has cleaned up the USA pretty good in the past 20 years.
