I've been following this story since it broke yesterday morning and I knew it had to be more than just some pipe bombs to bring in Homeland Security and the FBI. They just broke the news that indeed it was a plot to kill law enforcement officers.

WASHINGTON — People familiar with the case against seven suspects arrested by the FBI this weekend say the case revolves around a plot to kill police officers.

Two law enforcement officials tell The Associated Press that members of the group in the Midwest had planned multiple attacks on police officers or other law enforcement personnel as a way of acting out their hatred for the government.

Detroit -- Nine members of a militia group arrested in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Ohio were planning to "levy war" against the United States and "oppose by force" the nation's government, according to an indictment released this morning in U.S. District Court in Detroit.

The eight men and one woman are members of the "Hutaree," identified as an "anti-government extremist organization" in the indictment, and each faces three to five charges, including sedition, attempts to use weapons of mass destruction, teaching/demonstrating use of explosive materials and two counts of carrying weapons in relation to a crime of violence.

The Adrian-based group Hutaree says it is training in modern combat techniques for a prophesized battle with the anti-Christ.

The indictment says they were planning to kill a member of law enforcement, possibly after a traffic stop, to "prompt a response by law enforcement."

The goal: To "intimidate and demoralize law enforcement, diminishing their ranks and rendering them ineffective," according to the indictment.

The federal indictment charges that the leader of Hutaree, David Brian Stone (known as RD), was plotting to kill an unspecified member of law enforcement. It says the plan was to kill an officer and then attack law enforcement vehicles with improvised explosive devices when officers gathered for that officer's funeral.

Charged in the indictment released today are:

* David Brian Stone (RD) of Clayton, Mich.
* David Brian Stone Jr. (Junior) of Adrian (the son of David Brian Stone)
* Joshua Matthew Stone (Josh) of Clayton (the son of David Brian Stone)
* Tina Mae Stone of Clayton (the wife of David Brian Stone)
* Joshua John Clough (Azzurlin) of Blissfield
* Michael David Meeks (Mikey) of Manchester Township
* Thomas William Piatek of Whiting, Ind.
* Khristopher T. Sickles (Pale Horse) of Sandusky, Ohio
* Jacob J. Ward (Jake) of Huron, Ohio

All face charges of seditious conspiracy; carrying, using and possessing a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence; and attempting to use weapons of mass destruction. Some also face additional charges.

As of this morning, eight of the nine people charged are in custody, while Joshua Stone is considered a fugitive. Seven of them appeared for a 10 a.m. detention hearing in Detroit federal court.

Great, then maybe you can fill me in on what evidence the FBI has against the members of the group. All I've heard is a bunch a dark hearts and dirty minds crap from the prosecutor. They have been charged with seditious conspiracy, which is hardly ever used and has a broad case history under the law. In fact the government has never won a sedition case against a militia group in US History. And according to the indictment, the Justice Dept's whole case is based on a single informant. Sounds like a load of trumped up bullshit to me.

A federal judge acquitted seven members of the Hutaree militia Tuesday of the most serious charges following six weeks of testimony in a high-profile terror case.

On the second anniversary of the Hutaree arrests, U.S. District Judge Victoria Roberts granted a defense motion Tuesday to acquit the militia members on seven charges, including seditious conspiracy and conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction. The most serious charge could have resulted in 30-year prison sentences...

The judge said the government's case was built largely on circumstantial evidence

"While this evidence could certainly lead to a rational fact-finder to conclude that 'something fishy' was going on, it does not prove beyond a reasonable doubt that defendants reached a concrete agreement to forcibly oppose the United States government," Roberts wrote.

The judge's order cannot be appealed, said Peter Henning, a former prosecutor and current law professor at Wayne State University. That would constitute double jeopardy.

"Ultimately, this was a case that was all talk and no action," Henning said. "This is a blow to the government. They put a lot of resources into this case. It demonstrates how difficult it is to prove conspiracy cases that have not advanced very far."
