I honestly wouldn't know which party to vote for these days. So I used this website, which matches your views with a political party, that a mate sent to me:

It's 30 questions and a bit more. I was always brought up as a centrist, so I'm probably a commie by US standards. My family were Conservative Party voters until the 80s and then Labour Party after that.

So it was interesting to find out that my results as to which Party I'm most aligned to were:

CONSERVATIVE PARTY: 52%
LIBERAL DEMOCRAT PARTY: 47%
LABOUR PARTY: 27%

I expected that I would be Liberal Democrat these days, mostly because of the financial knowledge of Vince Cable. However, it has matched me more with the Tories.

I couldn't vote for the Tories but also Labour these days as I really don't trust either of them. I'd choose Liberal Democrat partly because I agree with their manifesto more than the others but British politics needs to be freshened up a bit.

It's only a bit of fun but which party does the website pledge your allegiences to?

I'd also be interested in the results from the US/Canadian war boarders. Is the UK as socialist as many North Americans think?

And here's my opinion on the leaders of each party:

Cameron. Toff snake oil seller who to me remains all front and lack of substance. Apart from their perceived stance on Europe, I don't really know what they stand for these days. Rather attractive wife, after a few pints.

Brown. Well, the job is too big for him isn't it. Ignoring the economy, he just isn't a LEADER. Always wanted the power but cannot handle it IMO. His wife is.... erm,.... no, .. just. ,, . no.

Clegg: Didn't catch the TV debate but I'm not surprised he played a blinder. The Liberal Democrats never really get a look in so it was obvious he was going to relish equal time on prime time TV. Fit Spanish wife.

Don't know though. Some of those questions I had to skip because I didn't know enough about the issues. And several of them were worded in very black-and-white terms and didn't allow for a whole lot of context.

There must not be as big of a gap in mentality between Labour and the Conservatives as between the Democrats and Republicans in the U.S.

They are definitely close these days. They basically fight over the centre ground ala middle class suburbanites, who get shafted in turn by both. The swing was towards the Conservatives but Liberal Democrats are gaining ground. As the LD are usually the loser 3rd party, this might be the only thing that will make the General Election interesting.

That's crazy though because I don't think there were any race-based questions, or maybe only one.

I think I remember someone (Cliff maybe?) saying that what we consider liberal in the USA is really like moderate over there or something like that.

Yeah, that's why I get a grim chuckle about folks calling Obama a socialist or marxist , etc. Obama is just barely to the left of Clinton, Bill...who was about as truly centrist one could get...but Obama is certainly not a very hard lefty at all. Outside the US that is...and that means the right wing. The real left wing doesn't think he's all that "liberal". I like him, but I don't see him as some great leader of the Socialist Workers Paradise.

I see him above all as a pragmatist. Whatever his personal opinions are, he appears more than willing to compromise them to get things done - be it caving in to Joe Lieberman on the public option, possibly caving in to the Republicans on the 50 billion bank financed fund for financial reform, or various other major policy issues. I think his motto is "Speak boldly and carry a very flexible stick."

If, on the other hand, the sight of non-Aryans makes you feel queasy, you think that some elements (but not all!) of the KKK are palatable, you're heavily tattooed and cannot spell the word "xenophobia" even though the concept is attractive, welcome to the British National Party!

Jake - as far as I'm concerned, that Marxist-Leninist running-dog Obama would slot seamlessly into the Conservative party. Both Labour and Conservative have moved to capture the centrist mid-ground, though I imagine some Labour policies would still seem alarmingly left-wing in the USA. The Liberal Democrats seemingly had the "Third Way" goose cooked but looked doomed to remain also-rans. However, they now have a reputation as being the most radical (read: liberal and vaguely left-leaning) of the three major parties. I would dispute this rather simplistic viewpoint as the Liberals are a broad church, taking in everything from social democrats to free marketeers.

I have no idea what you Americans would do if you met a real Socialist.

We weren't too kind to Eugene Debs, and then there was that whole "Red Scare" thingy....

We actually do have Socialist and Communist parties in this country, but I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that very few people can even name a "prominent" member of any of the parties. I know I can't. Well I can name some dead ones, Jack London and Carl Sandburg, but the parties are very marginal here.

I agree that Obama (and certainly that pinko Bill Clinton) would be seen as not liberal outside North America. Capitalist Running Dogs! (I just wanted to type that, it always cracks me up).

The Teabaggers should read the party platforms of the real Socialist and Communist parties.

And it's kinda ironic, because populism, defined as the common folk against the elites, is really popular in this country. The right wing has been quite successful in turning the elites into, not the robber barons, etc, but those pesky liberals and gasp, people who think. It's a really anti-intellectual movement, because the actual elites are still making money hand over fist at their expense. But the "populists" don't recognise it. They see the hoity toity effete liberals as the elite...not Wall Street and the hedge fund managers ( read recently that something like 28 hedge fund managers make as much as nearly 700,000 teachers in this country. Yet, it's the teachers who get the grief).

Yeah, I've always found it funny since I moved to Vermont from the UK that Vermont is seen as "liberal" by the rest of America, but my reality is that compared to Britain people here are still "right wing".

Maybe it's just the people I know.

I got Lib Dem and that's who I intend to vote for anyway...

Even the Conservatives would be considered liberal in the States.

This election is certainly going to be interesting. I just hope the Tories don't get in, you know how I like to "feed off the government tit" or whatever it is you kids are calling it these days.

I tried yours... I was mostly BNP again, but UKIP for Environment and Liberal Dem for Education.. not surprising.

I'm happy with that although the BNP's presence in my results for the second poll is a bit disturbing. I would like to vote Lib Dem but my constituency, which is held by Labour, has the fifth smallest majority in the country and there's a real danger that the Tories will get hold of come election day. Therefore, I will be voting for Labout on that day.

I live in a very Conservative area... I'm pretty sure the Tories will win here no matter who I vote for. It's always Conservatives then Liberal Democrats then Labour here and in 2008 (when Boris Johnson resigned as our MP) the Green Party were third followed by BNP then Labour!

I vote in David Cameron's constituency. Guess who's going to win that one.
