Texas GOP platform: criminalize gay marriage and ban sodomy, outlaw strip clubs and pornography

The Texas Republican Party gives a whole new meaning to the word conservative.

The GOP there has voted on a platform that would ban oral and anal sex. It also would give jail sentences to anyone who issues a marriage license to a same-sex couple (even though such licenses are already invalid in the state).

“We oppose the legalization of sodomy,” the platform says. “We demand that Congress exercise its authority granted by the U.S. Constitution to withhold jurisdiction from the federal courts from cases involving sodomy.”

The Lone Star state initially passed a law barring sodomy in 1860. Violators faced anywhere from five to 15 years in prison. The ban was overturned in 2003.

In addition, the platform says that homosexuality “tears at the fabric of society, contributes to the breakdown of the family unit and leads to the spread of dangerous communicable diseases.”

It also states that homosexuality must not be presented as an acceptable “alternative” lifestyle in public schools and “family” should not be redefined to include homosexual couples.

The 25-page proposal, presented last week as a guide for the state GOP over the next two years, includes other measures including outlawing “sexually oriented businesses” like strip clubs and banning “all pornography.”

I've never been down with legislating morality. I think it's retarded. I don't know of any Texas republicans that openly tout those views though, at least not to that extreme. There are probably a few kooks from dry county districts that campaign based on that shit, but any mainstream guy would know that was political suicide. I find it pretty hard to believe that this is any kind official platform.

I've got nothing. It makes no sense. With the current economy the last thing people are worried about are strippers and homos.

I don't know what to tell you; it's been reported all over the place and EYU posted a download link.

I guess when it comes down to it they're probably not going to base the campaign around these issues, but it is a part of the platform right now.

I've been saying the GOP is bat shit crazy for years (as opposed to craven politicl cowards like most Democrats )....I guess they just decided to not even bother trying to pretend they aren't anything but an American version of the Taliban.

And these are the same folks that control the Texas school books, which in turn are used by a large part of the country. This year one of them managed to get Thomas Jefferson cut from the list of 18th century writers who inspired the revolutions that followed him...replacing him with Thomas Aquinas and John Calvin. Thomas motherfucking Jefferson!!!!!!!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Gov. Helmet Head Perry decides to endorse this retardation so we can finally get him out of there. He's leading in the polls but White (the Dem) has a shot. It's funny, I've posted this before but a part of my family is EXTREMELY wealthy. My great uncle POURS money into campaigns and shit. So much so, we had a suicide in the family and McCain called my great uncle personally to extend his condolences...

My immediate family were joking, "Glad Casey didn't answer that call!" Reason is, I don't give a fuck, I say what I think around that part of the fam. They're good people no doubt but my cousins? They've had anti sodomy laws on the books for ages in a lot of places. They're almost never enforced. It's just a bunch of bible thumper bullshit designed to make sure the jeebus cripies stay on their side. There are a shit ton of Baptists in Texas, but there's no way any of that crap ever gets taken seriously enough for the legislature to make any kind of a priority. The strip club thing does have some teeth in it, but that happens all over the country. There are still a lot of "dry" places in rural Texas where booze and sexually oriented businesses are illegal, but you can drive to the county line of every one of those areas and find a line of liquor stores and porn shops with parking lots full of cars. Baptists like to talk a bunch of shit and keep "respectable airs" but they're just as depraved as the rest of us. Probably more so.
