Minuteman Shawna Forde Gets The Death Penalty

Most of my problems with the death penalty have more to do with its uneven application by race and class, the leaning heavily on coerced testimony and shaky evidence, and the questionable actions of politically ambitious prosecutors. Far too often, this leads to the conviction of the wrong person.

But this one? I think they nailed it.

That said, as a liberal, I should have know there were good reasons why she was so very, very twisted, and that's where I have a real problem with the death penalty: These are people that we, as a society, have failed.
A Washington state resident who once bragged she was going to take her Minutemen group to the “next level” was sentenced to death Tuesday for plotting a deadly home invasion that took the life of a 9-year-old Arivaca girl and her father.

A Pima County jury deliberated four hours over two days before deciding Shawna Forde, 43, should join the other two women on Arizona’s death row.

Forde, 43, was convicted Feb. 14 of first-degree murder in the May 30, 2009, deaths of Raul Junior Flores, 29, and Brisenia Flores, 9, and of attempted first-degree murder in the shooting of Gina Gonzalez, Flores’ wife and Brisenia’s mother.

Jurors were told Forde needed money for her border protection group, Minutemen American Defense, and decided to rob drug smugglers near the border.

Gonzalez testified her husband opened the door of their home to a man and a woman claiming to be law enforcement officers looking for fugitives.

The man opened fire on the couple when Junior Flores questioned their story and their daughter was shot at point-blank range while pleading for her life, Gonzalez told jurors.

A handful of inexpensive jewelry was later found in Forde’s possession.

Defense attorney Jill Thorpe asked jurors to spare Ford’s life, saying she was a “broken person” who suffered repeated acts of sexual and physical abuse and abandonment as a child.

The abuse and a subsequent stroke resulted in brain damage that left Forde vulnerable to manipulation, Thorpe said. She was unable to assess people or change course, she said.

Forde’s childhood also caused her to develop a narcissistic personality that led her to make to outlandish claims and an inability to accept responsibility for her involvement in the Floreses’ deaths, Thorpe said.

Translation: I don't really have deep philosophical opinion on the death penalty but I kinda support it when it's someone who is against my political ideology.

Yay!

Well, considering you don't have any sort of opinion you didn't read in a book written by smarter, more profound people, that is sort of like the pot calling the kettle black.

Yay!

And yes, I'll admit shooting a 9 year old who's pleading for her life at point blank range is against my political ideology.

Why am I not suprised it wouldn't be against yours?

Nothing gets conservatives more pissed off than when liberals see it their way. I'll never understand that.

"Sure I'm kinda liberal, but I think it's ok this guy got the death penalty."

"Huh! Some liberal YOU are!"

She killed some Mexicans in Arizona? She's a goddamn hero! I'd take her to a tea party or two.

There are a lot of people society failed, but if they are committing brutal murders like this, then i think capital punishment is still justified both as a reasonable punishment, and because they are the ones who will do it again if their switch is tripped. The child's death just makes it even more horrific.

I am a pretty liberal individual. But when someone points a gun at a nine year old child and blow her brains out while she is crying and begging for her life then I am all for strapping them down and injecting them with a not so healthy dose of potassium chloride. And I don't really care how much her life sucked prior to that and whatever pussified excuse she might have.

"Society failed"? What the fuck ever. That bitch killed a 9 year old in cold blood. I've got problems with the death penalty, but they have everything to do with proof and the fallibility of that proof. All these recent false convictions due to bad DNA testing etc have made me rethink the practice. It would seem that "reasonable doubt" isn't all that reasonable when it comes to capital punishment. If we kill an innocent person, then that's somebody that society has failed. Still, if you kill somebody in cold blood, and we KNOW you did it, you deserve to die and have your heinous self removed from society.

In your rush to be a dick, you must have missed where I said:

Rush to be a dick? Dude, you said "society failed her". This isn't on society. She's a cold blooded killer. Are you trying to assuage some kind of guilt over thinking she deserves the needle? There's really no need. She deserves to die.

I did, I also said they did the right thing by sentencing her to the death penalty.

But as I said in my previous post, you glossed over that.

And frankly, It's my opinion that 25 to 50 years, based on whatever life expectancy someone has who's been convicted of murder, in prison, is a WAAAAAAY worse punishment than being put to death.
