But it doesn't mean shit.

The polls that take place two weeks after the last convention are usually the ones we should start paying attention to. If they had Romney ahead by 10 points right now and I was an Obama supporter I still wouldn't be worried.

Romney will win Florida. Ohio and Virginia will be competitive.

The swing states are up in the air. It was pretty back and forth in VA and CO four years go and they both ended up going for Obama.

Look at the electoral map at www.realclealpolitics.com. Obama is ahead of Romney 243 to 170 and you need 270 to win!

In Ohio, Obama leads Romney 48 percent to 42 percent. In Florida and Virginia, Obama leads by identical 48 to 44 percent margins. All three polls have a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
Obama’s chances are helped by a belief that the economy is rebounding, as majorities in all three states believe that the worst of the economic downturn has passed. Furthermore, although Romney holds a narrow lead among men in all three states, Obama is routing him among women. In Florida and Virginia Obama leads by 10 percent among women, and in Ohio Obama leads by 12 percent.
While Obama’s leads are slim, the numbers suggest that they have room to grow. In both Virginia and Ohio, 58 percent of voters who strongly support their candidate favor Obama, compared to just 42 percent for Romney. Obama also leads among such voters 55 to 45 percent in Florida, suggesting that the president may be able to swing some current Romney supporters to his side.
As MSNBC’s First Read points out, these three states are especially critical for Romney:

All Obama has to do is win ONE of these, and he’ll likely surpass 270 electoral votes. Yet even if Romney wins all THREE, Obama still has a viable, though, slim path to 270 (if he wins Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Iowa, and New Hampshire). But make no mistake: Romney most likely needs to win all three states, while Obama’s goal is to win two — or maybe even one. Why is this the case? It’s the president’s advantage in the West right now. If Romney can’t pull at least Nevada, it puts a TON of pressure on him to sweep these three battlegrounds.

Like I said, that is a solid analysis of how things look in May. It is possible that Obama loses all three of those swing states, especially if Portman is picked as VP which could hand Romney Ohio. Too early to know how things will look in November.

The problem with Portman is he'll put much of the GOP base to sleep! Hardly an exciting candidate!

I read an article many a moon ago about how Republicans tend to be more dedicated voters, morel likely to go to the polls even when they don't want to.

Putting them to sleep won't be enough. An Independent will have to emerge and do to Romney what Perot did to Bush (41) when he siphoned votes from the Republican base.

Anyway, it's much too early.

Oh, the reason I wrote above we'll have to wait two weeks after the last convention is because the parties always get a bump in the polls right after their convention.

And Ron Paul may very well run as a 3rd party like Perot did in '92 which will put Obama in the White house till 2016!

I'm waiting for that. Hell, I'm hoping for it. He makes some great points about civil liberties and the way we use our military. I'd love to see those points made during a three way Presidential debate.

But I'm not sure he would take votes from Romney. Everyone I know who likes the guy is a liberal (though it might not be this way across the board).

Real Clear Politics has Obama ahead 237 to 170.

Go to that link, make a prediction and post it here. Who cares what a website says in June. It takes 270 to win.

FYI, President Bill Clinton said on CNN that Obama will win by 5 or 6 points.
