ESPN 30 for 30, SMU story-Pony Excess

Very much looking forward to this film. Will be very interesting to learn how many mistakes the school made and who was being blamed for the demise.
You have to assume players like Dickerson and Craig James were getting paid by some hick with a 10 gallon Cowboy hat.

James and dick were on ESPN the other night saying they both got paid, but not as much as everybody thinks. then james tried to tell the world that he thinks only 5 percent of college football players are getting paid.
Whatever on both of those.

did that white boy say only 5%? that is a joke. he is obviously protecting somebody or something with that comment.NeverSurrender wrote:James and dick were on ESPN the other night saying they both got paid, but not as much as everybody thinks. then james tried to tell the world that he thinks only 5 percent of college football players are getting paid.

i hope someone at ESPN quickly questioned his comment and corrected him.

If I remember the exact quote, he said between 5 and 10 percent.
I knew a backup defensive end at KENTUCKY who was getting paid.

This was another good one. I barely remember this as I barely followed College Ball in those days.
I hope there is a box set on all these 30/30's.

amazing film. very happy the film was 2 hours.NeverSurrender wrote:Those guys running that team had no clue. they ran it like the wild west. crazy, i never knew it was that bad.
i don't care how much the school suffered, they certainly got what they deserved.
the men responsible for the payouts, the breaking of the rules, etc.....all of them could have cared less they were caught.
the empty apologies, especially from the Governor was pathetic. he, like so many of them, were only sorry they were caught.
the NCAA told them over and over to stop breaking the rules. they did not hear or listen and went about their business.
good for that kid who "exposed" them for the crooks they were.
one of my favorite pieces of film was the footage of Dickerson getting into and out of his "gold Trans Am".

Finally watched this last night. Very well done. College sports are fucking worse now than they were back then. I'm all for automatically investigating every football program in the top 20 and every basketball program that makes the elite eight.

The corruption starts at the highest University Executive to the people who are working for the sports agents.
Recently i heard(could have been from this program) that every top 25 college football team is more than likely to be breaking the rules.

The money is so much higher now than when SMU was cheating you almost HAVE to cheat to keep that big dough coming in.Machado wrote:Far worse is being nice.johnk5150 wrote:Finally watched this last night. Re: ESPN 30 for 30, SMU story-Pony Excess
Thought it was a great movie, as most of the 30 for 30's have been. It was very entertaining, a typical 80s story of excess and greed. This kind of stuff no doubt still goes on, but they wouldn't be as brazen and obvious about it as they were during that time. They were almost begging to get caught. Personally, I've never been huge on college sports, and I don't understand what the big deal is about paying these athletes who bring in massive amounts of money for these institutions.
