Post by Mazerati » Tue Jun 12, 2018 11:14 pm

I remember in the late 80s when Tiffany's 2nd album came out "Hold An Old Friends Hand" this one record store was LOADED with unsold copies of it....I don't know why the store manager had such high expectations for this album but they were stuck with a ton of cassettes

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't that a Best Buy exclusive? If yes, then that would be normal as that was a "loss-leader".

Megadeth - Risk - This was one or two months after it was released and there were hundreds of the original release and hundreds of the No risk disc edition, which I got for half the price.

yea I don't want to be a dick but Chinese Democracy was only sold at Best buy and Best buy isn't a record store. But maybe they're from Europe.

This would probably come down to two for me. I remember seeing what had to be a 100 copies (at least) of AC/DCs Black Ice at a Wal-Mart in Blythewood, SC, that was known for having a higher than usual percentage of Black customers, so I'm assuming the DCs just sent the same shipments to everyone, and the Blythewood store simply couldn't move them. This was months after the album was released, so it was like they had just come in. All four covers too, including the "limited" book style one.

The other would be a Best Buy in Conyers, Georgia when Ratt's Infestation came out. Not quite as bad as the AC/DC situation, they still probably had 25 - 30 copies of the disc. This was a little more reasonable, as I think the CD had only come out two months prior, but still, those discs weren't going anywhere.

Kiss -Sonic Boom at our local Wal-Mart. Not a record store and it was an exclusive but they had about 100 copies on a giant display. Had toys, trinkets, shirts...Was there for about a month and every time i went in it looked the same. One day it was just gone.

KISS solo album break any all records for that. They were hit records but way oversold to retail. The returns were historic.

This.

I remember in the early 80s those lps filling the bargain bins everywhere. Everywhere. They seriously couldn't give them away.
My mom knew I liked kiss at one point, so one day she brings home the Gene album for me. I'm like mom "I already got this, where did you get it?" She said the corner food Mart had them for 99 cents.

There was a time when I was seeing Pete Townshend's "The Iron Man" in almost every cutout bin.

Poison's Native Tongue is one I remember. I bought a copy and sold it used after a month or two of never listening to it again. MC94 is another one, and Def Leppard-Slang.

Probably one of those Journey "Walmart Exclusive" albums. Perhaps it was called "Eclipse" or some shit like that.

First ones I thought of also. Even here in Australia, in the early-eighties the solo albums were in cut-out bins everywhere, even the picture disc versions, which I think I bought at the time for $2 each. Wasn't there an inside industry joke about them at the time? Something like "They were shipped platinum and returned double platinum".

The Casablanca Records book that came out a few years back (AND PARTY EVERY DAY) had some great info about the solo LPs. From what I recall, they expected all the KISS fans to buy all four solo LPs, but by 1978 most KISS fans were so young they were never going to afford (or get their parents to buy) four albums at once, so most just bought the LP by their favourite member. Combined they sold about the same as what a KISS studio LP likely would at that point. AFter they were returned and had their corners cut out, Casablanca were sending them off by the box to flea market vendors and discount stores, etc.

I also recall seeing stacks of copies of Van Halen 3 in the discount CD bins over here.

This easily...... I bought it a few years after Best Buy was overloaded with them for $3 at a place called Ollie's Discount Store. I guess that is how best buy finally got rid of them
