Who was the best second-rate GNR?

Post by Don't Damn Me »

You could argue against Tesla being a second-rate GNR, but as soon as Jeff Keith did the Axl dance in one of their videos, that's exactly what they became.

My favorite of the bunch is Asphalt Ballet followed very closely by Kik Tracee

Tesla, only because of their popularity.

Law and Order had some pretty cool tunes and from that list I'd put them 2nd

I would have gone with Rock City Angels had they been on the poll....or Kings of the Sun

Isn't the current GNR the best second-rate GNR?

Tesla is easily the best band listed. But I don’t consider them remotely GnRish.

LAG is the obvious answer. Junkyard a bit too Texas...

I would throw in Beautiful Creatures. That first album is a stone cold classic. Very Gn'R which I sure is how Dj got the gig.

I will say that Junkyard was MORE GNR before their album. Tom Werman had a thing for southern rock (he tried to sign Skynyrd when he was an A&R guy, then signed/produced Molly Hatchett later on) and sort of pushed the record in that direction.

First time I saw them (before they were signed) tho my take was: "GNR with a less annoying singer."

Johnny Crash? I saw a vid of them and they seemed to be GnR mixed with less aggressive GnR

I think LA Guns win this one. It was literally Axl Rose and Tracii Guns. It's been hanging over Tracii's shoulder his whole life.

One band I'm surprised no ones mentioned is Skid Row. They had great epic power ballads also. LA Guns had good ballads for sure but they were not huge anthems like GNR and Skid Row had.

I voted LA Guns too. But then I've never heard any Kik Tracee songs and this is the first time I've ever heard of Law And Order. Pretty much any band that was all about Hollywood sleaze without the glam look. I'd have replaced the last two with Faster Pussycat and Shark Island. Actually didn't I read here that Axl stole his dance moves from the SI singer?

I’ll throw The Hangmen in the vote.

Rock City Angels was a good pick, they was as self destructive as GNR and I think Geffen had them pegged as GNR 2.

I vote Junkyard as they were the most “dirty” of the bands listed.

Where the blue f*ck are Love/Hate and Spread Eagle? They should both be included. Tesla? Nah. They sound very little like G'n'R. Out of these, I'd go with Junkyard. LAG weren't exactly as G'n'R-ish as a lot of you think, either.

Another vote for Dangerous Toys. Not sure how they've been largely overlooked in this poll.

Allegedly, yes, but Law of the Order doesn't exactly sound as raw and sleazy as Appetite..., though.

Odin, Odin, Odin, Odin, Odin. They were foxy guys!

But I voted for L.A. Guns. They were pretty much as good as GNR. Those first two albums were really good.
