How popular were Black Oak Arkansas?
Question for anyone old enough to remember. Buddy of mine insists they were extremely popular. I had thought they were only marginally successful for a few years then died out. Just curious if anyone remembers if they were "extremely popular".

They were pretty popular, playing in auditoriums and arenas. They did a lot of TV stuff, such as Midnight Special, In Concert, etc.JamesHetfieldsAcneScars wrote: ↑Sun Nov 12, 2023 7:56 am Question for anyone old enough to remember. I think they were known more for their visual delivery and style, rather than the songs themselves.
Their manager, Butch Stone, became very well known in the music business industry.

For the most part album covers were better than the music...

It could depend on where you're from. I had 'Raunch and Roll' as a teen and played it quite a bit, but I never heard them on the radio, and never heard anyone talking about them. This is up in North Seattle.

Yeah I could definitely see their appeal being more selective for the Midwest and South and not so much on the coasts. They only had 1 top 50 album and 1 top 40 single, after all. Seems like they caught that mid-70s wave when rock tours exploded and rode it.

I would lump them in with Foghat, Molly Hatchet. Anyone have the album with a deed to 1 sq inch of land in Arkansas?

Foghat and Molly Hatchet were like the Who and Led Zeppelin compared to BoA - they each had several gold and platinum records.

Without Black Oak Arkansas there would be no David Lee Roth or Jackly!
I'm exaggerating obviously but they certainly took a cue from singer Jim Dandy in his prime.

I do!
And Foghat & Hatchet are good comps to group them in with, though not as successful as those two.

Yeah, Roth seems to have been very much influenced by Jim Dandy. I wasn't a fan of Black Oak Arkansas and never saw Jim Dandy. However, I saw Roth during the first and second VH tours.
When I watch video clips today of Jim Dandy in his prime, I see where Roth got a lot of his stage style.

Re: How popular were Black Oak Arkansas?
People were hesitant on Roth in 76/77 because he was dismissed as a Jim Dandy clone.
45 years later the only thing Jim Dandy is remembered for is being an inspiration for DLR.
I think that counts as irony.

Not a single good song.
Re: How popular were Black Oak Arkansas?
Would it be fair to say they are Faster Pussycat level popular. Here me out, one song many, not most people...House of Pain and Jim Dandy. Other songs die hards may know but Black Oak Arkansas may be largely forgotten if it wasn't the fact that Jim Dandy was on the Dazed and Confused soundtrack.
Re: How popular were Black Oak Arkansas?
In the Greater Boston area, not at all. One drummer kid had a BOA record because Tommy Aldridge was in the band & we knew him from Ozzy. I haven't listen to them since then.

Re: How popular were Black Oak Arkansas?
Looks like Jim Dandy went "metal" in the 80s and had a Thor style metal band.
This video is awesome!

Jim looks to be about 5'6", hes as short as the hotties he is gettin' with.
The whole song and video are just weird and awkward. I may have to revisit this. I would say he's better than Thor!
EDIT: Jim's daughter reviewed this video!!

Y’all, yallllllllllllll, y’all........ lawd y’all. I can’t even with this shiz. Lol it’s CRINGE AT LEVEL 10 on a scale of 1 to 5 for me. But it reminds me of my childhood, and that rules. I was 5 when the album released and I think a was 6 or 7 when the video hit the airwaves. Rickie Lee is on guitar and dad’s swinging around the sword that saved my mom and I from a home invasion while he was on the road and we were home alone. THAT story will be next episode on Growing Up Dandy! Thank you all for checking out my channel, watching my crazy stuff and THANK YOU FOR SUBSCRIBING! haha, wow, good find!! It's a catchy song, I was humming 'Ready As Hell' for a while after that!HueyRamone wrote: ↑Wed Nov 15, 2023 7:22 am Looks like Jim Dandy went "metal" in the 80s and had a Thor style metal band.

Some of the footage kinda matches the song, but the guitar solo is like some completely different tune or something, pretty funny
