Shane MacGowan not doing great
Sad to see. Grim hospital picture of him in the link.

Shame he did nothing of note after those great two 90s solo albums, I still play The Snake often, just a great rock and roll album.

Yikes! He definitely looks like death personified right now! Shame because "Wild Cats of Kilkenny", "Sally Maclennane", "Fairytale of New York", and "Turkish Song of the Damned" are all awesome tunes,

People say "I wonder what Hendrix/Morrison/Cobain etc. would have created for music had they lived"? I'll say the same for Shane, but he did live, which makes it all the more heartbreaking.

Re: Shane MacGowan not doing great
Wonder if that was a conscious decision he made, like Mark Hollis of Talk Talk, who said that he'd achieved everything he wanted with music. I know Shane rejoined the Pogues for a few tours but to completely stop writing and recording, as such a well regarded writer and lyricist, felt like a real loss.tooth wrote: ↑Wed Nov 15, 2023 8:34 amSo trueWhatever Happened To… wrote: ↑Wed Nov 15, 2023 4:23 amShame he did nothing of note after those great two 90s solo albums

I read today that he gets in excess of £300,000 a year from Fairytale of NY. I know he gives a lot of that away from reading the book by his wife Victoria, but at least he should be getting decent care at this stage of his life.
Always thought a booze related accident would do him in, like getting hit by a car on the way home from the pub. This looks like a terrible way to go out though, for both him and his wife. Really sad.

Sorry to learn that he's doing so poorly, but I'm kind of amazed he's made it as long as he has.

Brilliant songwriter, but after 50 years of hard living it's not a surprise.

Not to be cruel, but going by any picture I've ever seen of the guy, his current look is pretty much as expected.

I thought he was dead. I'm still not totally convinced otherwise.

Wow I didn’t think he could look any worse than usual but there you go.
On the other hand dificult to compare to old pics because he litterally looks unrecognizable now.

R.I.P. Shane. Gonna crank some “Fairytale of New York” in memory. And let’s also not forget that “Wild Cats of Kilkenny” was used in the awesome Miami Vice scene where Sonny’s car gets blown up by a military-grade missile launcher as part of the episode that featured Luan Neeson as an Irish revolutionary:

Re: Shane MacGowan not doing great
The Pogues were a lot of fun and I have a lot of fond memories associated with their music going back close to 40 years. Shane was an unforgettable character, and he will be missed, but I think he was lucky to have made it as long as he did. Look forward to cranking some Pogues later today, likely with a shot or two of Jameson chased with a couple of pints of Guinness.

A very durable liver to make it to 60 plus.

His legacy is secure and will be remembered for as long as people care about music. A flawless run of albums and the greatest Christmas song ever written.

Would it be in poor taste to raise a glass to his memory?
