Where to start with a few 70's bands

I'm looking for good starting points for some 70's bands I never got around to checking out:

Free
Bad Company
Blue Oyster Cult
The Allman Brothers Band
The Doobie Brothers

I'm familiar with their popular stuff and have hard an album here and am looking to go a little deeper. What's good, what should I avoid, who was good after their commercial peak, stuff like that. Also, any books worth reading on the bands or specific members. Since this is Sludge, let me be the first to tell myself to fuck off. Jokes aside, I've gotten some great advice and feedback over the years, and some great Sludge, so either way, have at it. Thanks.

Blue Öyster Cult:
- Fire of Unknown Origin
- Agents of Fortune
- Extraterrestrial Live (most Öystards will instead recommend On Your Feet Or On Your Knees, but this one has some crucial material missing from their 2 earlier ones)

No idea about those other bands, the Greatful Dead has some bangers, though.

Good call. Most BÖC albums from the 70s and 80s are at least good but this one stands out. But I first heard BÖC with Club Ninja and Imaginos which seem to be their career killing one-two punch ala Unmasked and Elder. I love Imaginos but someone who followed them in the 70s may see it differently.

But of course! Buck's Boogie!

And I'd start with the 2-CD comp Workshop of the Telescopes. BoC is more than a GH band, but not much more. Lot of filler on the albums. Agree that Fire is probably their best album.

my 1st blue oyster cult cassette i bought was fire of unknown origin but it came out in 81 i think.

That's an interesting question because it depends on how you were introduced to music at that age.

BadCo, Foreigner, Boston, Deep Purple were four memories of listening to LPs with my older cousin (who also happened to have a drawer full of Penthouse). As a 10-11 yro, I loved hanging with my cousin.

BadCo - 1st 3 albums.
Allmans - up thru Brothers and Sisters. Things got pretty spotty til Seven Turns. Pick back up from there and stay along for the ride til they kicked Dickey out (2000)

"Greatest Hits" and "Best ofs" are always good starting points, but here's a couple of ideas for the bands you mentioned:

At Fillmore East by the Allman Brothers Band is great. (The first two studio albums are good too.)

Bad Company and Run with the Pack, the first two by Bad Company, are really good. (The problem here is that none of the later albums are nearly as good.)

Agents of Fortune is probably B.O.C.'s only "must have", classic album. Some people also like their live albums.

The Doobie Brothers' Toulouse Street and The Captain and Me are very good. Most the the best cuts are on Best ofs. I don't like the Michael McDonald stuff as much, but Minute by Minute is a great album too.

Don't know much about Free, aside from a song or two. Maybe I should do a deeper dive into their first couple of albums...

Doobies = China Grove, Long Train Runnin’, Listen To The Music, What A Fool Believes, and then go from there.

Totally disagree... besides Reaper, it's pretty meh. Other than ETI, they don't play anything else from it live.

BOC - Secret Treaties, On Your Feet or On Your Knees and E.T. Live.

Allman Bros - First 5 albums, including the legendary At Fillmore East. Even their 6th album, Win, Lose or Draw has plenty of good stuff on it. A little hit or miss after that.

There are many Blue Oyster Cult fans who actually prefer the album Fire of Unknown Origin over Agents of Fortune.
