Re: Do you still hate Chinese Democracy?
Still love it to this day
I remember waiting in the parking lot at Best Buy for it to be released.
I also remember streaming it on MySpace before it was released.
So many great songs. There Was A Time is one of my top 5 favorite songs of all time!

Haven't played it in awhile, but have never hated it. Other than the annoying lack of bass, I've enjoyed it from first listen.

Great album. The only GnR release I still play.

For an Axl Rose solo albums, it's great.

Re: Do you still hate Chinese Democracy?
I love "Better", (and the song Chinese Democracy is ok) but overall CD is completely underwhelming.
And for an album that cost a billion dollars, it sounds cheap, and the mid 90's effects/production (over a decade too late) make it sound dated as fuck.
Viewed as an Axl solo album, and/or if it was released back in 1996 (along with Motley Crue's "Genertion Swine" and Warrant's "Ultraphobic"), I might be a little more tolerant.

Hated that it was released as a GnR album.

Re: Do you still hate Chinese Democracy?
I only skimmed through it online.
Liked ‘sorry,’ especially with the Rourke wrestler footage (some video that was up at the time)
Liked IRS, but it could have rocked much harder
Nothing else seemed appealing

Re: Do you still hate Chinese Democracy?
In my mind it was so massively overhyped there was no way it could ever live up to it, and it didn't.
I went through it a couple time, and there is some good stuff but I never find myself listening to it now
I couldn't tell you one song off the top of my head (OK, Shaklers Revenge just popped into my head)
I'll give it another listen today

Re: Do you still hate Chinese Democracy?
Never hated it, but was shocked by the failure of it's release. The hilarious cover, only at Best Buy, and Axl goes MIA and runs away from promoting it like a little kid? After working on it for 15 years? It didn't seem real.
Musically the songs are there, but Sonically it's one of the worst records you'll ever hear - The foundation of the record was done when Nine Inch Nails and Backstreet Boys ruled the world. A lot of the guitars have that cheap early 2000's guitar plugin sound... like Richie Kotzen's early-2000s solo albums do. And that "early 200s pop drum loop" thing is all over the record and is embarrassing. Most expensive record ever made but it sounds like some weirdos all-over-the-place home demos.

Re: Do you still hate Chinese Democracy?
I torrented it and played it when it came out. Boring.
I tried again shortly before seeing them in June. It was still boring.
I doubt there'll be a third time.

This... to hate something, you have to care about it 1st. Was never the least but interested.

I never judged it as a Guns album, because in my mind it isn’t, but it’s not a bad Axl solo album, overall, for my ears.
There are some songs on it that I’ve taken various levels of liking to, and the rest I think are shite.

Really liked it at the time of release. Played it a lot. It hasn't aged well for me though. Barely listen to it these days.

Re: Do you still hate Chinese Democracy?
Never hated it. Always loved about 3/4 of the album.
There are a few songs that I just don't get, but the rest makes up for it IMO.
I also ran to Best Buy the day it was released to get it. I actually called the night before to see if they were doing one of those midnight on-sale promotions. The guy on the phone just laughed when I asked.

Always loved Better. Great song.
But that album as a whole is overproduced, unlistenable dreck. I tried to listen to it again in the last year and couldn't finish it.

I think Better is better than most of Use Your Illusions, otherwise it’s forgettable… other than Shacklers Revenge, The title track, and the for-mentioned Better, I’d be hard pressed to state any other song title

ADKOT was bottom of the barrel leftovers. Everything decent had been picked over years earlier. Only for collectors and fanboys.
ChiDem was all new shit. Excellent tunes. Very different.

There's some good stuff on it. Lots of people hate it, but I don't really get why other than sounding nothing like AFD. Some of the shorter songs aren't all that great. It's a general problem post-AFD: the band became incapable of writing a simple good rocker. It's the epic tunes that stand out. Oh and I actually like some of the original leaks better than the final product.

I just hate the cover...and 2 songs on it that I always skip...I only listen to it about twice a year but I can't remember the names of them. Definitely not Shakler's Revenge, I dig that tune!

Never hated it but never loved it either. The only really good song was "Riad 'n the Bedouins," which didn't sound much like GNR.

I never listened to it.
The whole, Axl being a dick for the ten years it took to record it, put me off a little bit.
I more hate the thought of Chinese Democracy, than the actual album that I have never heard.

Re: Do you still hate Chinese Democracy?
I gave the album a spin yesterday. I remember the title track being a fairly simple straightforward rocker when they debuted it live. The album version has these terrible guitar fills all over it. It's like Axl thought Bumblefoot should be on the final track too and he added a bunch of noodling.Indy_Rob wrote: ↑Sat Dec 09, 2023 2:18 pmThe original leak of Better is better than the album version.SchenkerFan wrote: ↑Sat Dec 09, 2023 12:02 pm There's some good stuff on it. I gotta give Robin Finck some credit though, lots of people hated him but he has some great solos on several songs.
