Stephen Dawson: Saxon founder member jailed for child sex offences

A founding member of one the UK's most successful heavy metal bands has been jailed for historic child sex offences.

Stephen Dawson was the bassist in Saxon, who formed in 1975 in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, and went on to sell more than 23 million records.

Dawson, of Street Lane, Rotherham, was jailed for repeatedly abusing a six-year-old girl in the 1990s.

The 72-year-old was sentenced to six years in prison on Thursday after a trial at Sheffield Crown Court.

Dawson was found guilty at an earlier hearing of four counts of indecent assault of a child under 14.

Det Con Robert Heath, the officer in charge of the case, said Dawson "thought he had got away" with his attacks on a vulnerable victim 30 years ago.

"It is clear that his evil acts have remained with her throughout her life, and I hope this sentence goes some way to allowing her to move on from these traumatic events," he added.

Remember Saxon has a ton of albums out. Over 20 studio albums, 10-15 live albums, a load of compilations. They don't have to sell that much of each album if all Saxontards buy every release.

Two things:
1) Dawson has been out of Saxon for more than 35 years, and was not a member af the band when the stuff he got sentenced for happened.
2) The article says 23 million records, not albums. It may be stretching it, but they have 130 releases listed at metal-archives.com and 162 at discogs.com

Biff Byford had his first child at 15, in 1966 and I suspect the mother wasn't older than him.
To his (somewhat) credit, he married her and knocked her up again before they divorced, all before Biff turned 18 it seems.
