I’m watching the Rick Beato interview with Jimmy and he comes across as being a very intelligent dude when it comes to being a professional musician.
When it comes to drummers where do you rate Jimmy among the rest?

He’s an excellent drummer and a really nice guy. The last time they played Irving plaza a few years ago he walked out and talked to everyone who wanted to chat. He even let me walk up and check out his kit. Same story 10 years earlier when they played an empty show in providence. He fits perfectly for that band.

Yep he's the only other real member of that band. The other 2 were just stage props.

I kinda put him in the same tier as Stephen Perkins and Matt Cameron. Probably three of the best alt drummers. Excellent timekeeping.
I'm probably partial to Dave Grohl as the #1 of that era, in regards to overall feel and groove and heaviness.

Not a fan of the Pumpkins but he's like the drummer equivalently of Bootsy Collins - his talent transcends his band and genre. You hear him drummer and you're like "Fuck that guy is awesome."

Great drummer although he can suffer a bit from the bonham thing of hitting everything hard
But very very good

I’ve never been the biggest fan of his style but he’s an absolute beast of a drummer and this is much more ‘I’m not smart enough to appreciate his genius’ than saying he sucks or something.
For whatever reason I have Jimmy and Matt Cameron way below Grohl, Kinney, Kretz, etc. even though technically and on paper they’re the ‘best drummers’ of the bunch.
“United States” was done in one take and it’s awesome, FWIW.

Only an idiot wouldn't appreciate his talent as a drummer, whether or not they happened to like his style of playing.

I can't decide if I like Grohl or Mike Bordin (FNM) better.Neil Diamond Dave wrote: ↑Thu Aug 29, 2024 3:17 pm I'm probably partial to Dave Grohl as the #1 of that era, in regards to overall feel and groove and heaviness.

Bordin was great as well. We could go on about some of those insanely good alt drummers of the 90s. Tim "Herb" Alexander in Primus deserves some recognition too.mullet_head wrote: ↑Fri Aug 30, 2024 7:26 amI can't decide if I like Grohl or Mike Bordin (FNM) better.Neil Diamond Dave wrote: ↑Thu Aug 29, 2024 3:17 pm I'm probably partial to Dave Grohl as the #1 of that era, in regards to overall feel and groove and heaviness.
Grohl to me, was such a dynamo when he came out. Hit the shit out of the drums when he needed to, but had great timekeeping and soft dynamics too. I just remember seeing him for the first time and thinking, this is one of those drummers that you can tell who they are simply by hearing them for a minute or two.
Re: Where do you rate Jimmy Chamberlain? (Smashing Pumpkins)
Chamberlain is 10x the drummer Grohl is. Grohl’s playing is fine, but he’s vastly overrated. He’s the most famous of this era’s drummers, but far from the best.
