Cool footage. Saw them 3 times during that era. There was always something a bit different about a Poison show. The crowd was half guys half girls..and everyone at these shows were having a blast.
Went to a ton of shows those days, and Poison stood out for how much fun they were.

Really a shame that they stopped creating anything after 2002. I always enjoyed their good time music for what it is and their live has always been really good. Bret really wrecked everything with his massive ego. They could have put out an album every 3 or 4 years and he could have still done his solo nonsense. They’ve had all the original guys together and did basically nothing with it since 2002 except their tours. It’s disappointing as a fan.

I dunno, Poison has always sounded very "thin" live. You can hear the syths. But it's the thin drums and bass that stand out to me. They needed something, another guitar or bass player?, to thicken their sound.

The only other pro shot footage I’ve seen from that era were some clips from the 1989 MTV Rockumentary. Even that was more like MTV cameras filming highlights rather than full song broadcasts.

That's like saying the Dokken or the Sex Pistols needed a second guitarist to fill out their sound.

Simple songs with one guitar (outside of a few chords from Brett here and there) is Poisons sound. Take it or leave it - it's a completely different thing with two guitarists.

We were messing with sampling for his drums as early as '86/87. I am sure that by '88 everything you heard in the house was triggered drums.

That'll make shit sound thin, but in the eighties it was all about attack, click and having the perfect hit every time. Synthetic was good.

I could be wrong but I remember reading something a while back that there was a fire and all the Poison archives were destroyed. Or maybe I made that up but I recall something like that happening. So maybe that's why there's never been any pro shots from 1986-1989 that have really come out.

Neither was Motley Crue (speaking of a thin sounding live band), Dokken, Ratt, Quiet Riot, GNR and I’ll even be so controversial and bold to say Van Halen. Van Halen were at least good musicians as well as entertainers and a fun band.

Ozzy is another, His bands were always amazing but he mostly sucked as a live singer.

I would love to have their setlist from the Palace when they filmed Cry Tough, any Country Club and Troubadour shows they did and their Texxas Jam set from the I Won’t Forget You video. I had the chance to see them on all three tours back then but only caught Flesh and Blood. They weren’t the best musicians but they put one one helluva live show. It was hard not to like them. Out of all of their Hollywood peers, they wrote great songs and were a fun band. I ended up liking them way better than Motley Crue, Ratt, Twisted Sister, WASP, Dokken, Quiet Riot. Had you told me that in 1986 I would’ve laughed at you.

I actually really like the sound of their first album. It's a lot thicker than anything else they did. Has some layers to it that they never were able to replicate in a live setting, let alone on another album.

I get the sense it's the bass (or lack thereof). But I'm no expert, surely Sleek could further explain, as he touched on it above.

I never loved their production until the excellent Fairbairn Fraser produced Flesh & Blood. I felt they found their stride. That continued with the Zito produced Native Tongue which was even better. I used to hate the production in LWTCDI but I have since recanted and have grown to appreciate it. I was never a fan of Tom Werman. Werman was a poor man’s Keith Olsen.
