Saw him live 3 times. Great shows. Glad I saw him before he died. Unlike that selfish Bastard Michael Jackson who died just a few months before his tour I had tickets for.

My first exposure to him was that godawful Batdance music video and that soured me on anything he ever did after that.

Prince is probably the most talented and influential musician of our time, only Stevie Wonder can be discussed in the same level.
He had the whole package—he excelled as a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, producer, and performer. His body of work is highly praised by artists across the music spectrum.

Your were still on all fours on your ghetto bed wanking to Bon Jovi videos and eating Betty Cockers when Prince was already worm food.

Re: PRINCE
An artist I straight up don't get and never will. I don't hear this supposed genius anywhere. And invariably, someone trots out that absolute garish wankfest where he ruined that song at whatever awards show he was at with Tom Petty as evidence of his being the greatest guitar player ever. I just straight-up don't hear it. I wish I did, honestly.

Prince doesn’t have guitar talent to be on Bulletboys first 2 cds. Prince is cool dude mostly from his image. Dude from INXS way better than Prince

Re: PRINCE
Way more than a handful! But yeah, lots of filler too. He must've released like 1,000 songs! There are bound to be a few duds in there!
The word "genius" is used a lot. I think it's because he played all the instruments on his albums or at least most of them. He wrote tons of catchy songs, good looking, great performer, dancer, guitar player, singer, you name it... Like Hendrix meets James Brown and more. So yeah, I guess that qualifies as genius. His 2 cd HITS collection confirms that. Purple Rain is a masterpiece. I loved the Gold Experience record too. RIP!
"You want Don Juan DeMarco, the world's greatest lover, to talk to you? What do you know of great love?"
Re: PRINCE
The variety in the styles should say enough, no two sounds on a best-off like this one sound the same:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hits/The_B-Sides
Secondly: he could back it all up live, music/vocals (never missed a note in 40 years of live gigs)/dancing/... Even disliking the music it's impossible to deny the performing talent.

David Allen Grier tells a great Prince story. "I told you mother fuckers...".

Re: PRINCE
I always put Prince in the savant or prodigy category. Skilled in many things, but not a genius. I tried to listen to his later catalog, and barely anything is catchy. I never saw him in concert, but I always imagined it being HIS wankfest - and I'd get bored trying to figure out which hit song he was recomposing on the fly.

Re: PRINCE
I tried to be an absolute Prince completist for a while and my first bother ever was a cassette tape of the then unreleased Black album. But by the mid 90’s - esp with the product he was releasing without his name - he completely lost me and I never went back.
His output from 1979 to 1985 was fantastic. I wasn’t high on parade or even Sign O The Times like a lot of others. Around Lovesexy I quit being a super fan.
Highly recommend the book Possessed.

Re: PRINCE
He was of his time - half his songs were a one-finger Casio keyboard lick over a Linn drum machine. Only good album after Purple Rain is Sign O' The Times. The rest are 1-2 good songs and a bunch of filler, and, after he started putting out his own records in the late 90s, it was all filler.Mojo wrote: ↑Wed Sep 25, 2024 6:44 am An artist I straight up don't get and never will. Re: PRINCE
Purple Rain, When Doves Cry... what else is there?
I remember seeing Prince always in Billboard list's of "Black" music (I wonder when they quit using those music categories)
What is the "multi talent" of Prince, would somebody please explain. How come he was better than, for example, Jermaine Stewart?

"Little Red Corvette"? "1999"? "Raspberry Beret"? He was more than just Purple Rain.

Re: PRINCE
"Get Lucky"" "Sit And Wait", "We Don't Have To Take Our Clothes Off"... Jermaine Stewart knew how to get catchy tunes while Prince was doing shit like "Sign Of The Times", not to mention the grazy stuff from artist-formely-known-as-Prince or what the fuck was that.

Remember when "they" said Terrance Trent D'Arby was the next Prince? I still don't know wtf he is saying in his 1 hit unless I Google the lyrics.
