I saw this on the News yesterday, but the initial report stated it was the passenger that died.. now it turns out, the passenger was her Dad!

I cannot imagine this poor girl having to live with this!

California dad dies after car plunges off cliff during driving lesson with teen daughter

A father is dead after a single-vehicle crash on Coast Highway in Laguna Beach on Memorial Day.
An investigation revealed the passenger - James Politoski - was teaching his daughter to drive when the collision occurred.
The cause of the crash is currently under investigation by the Laguna Beach Police Department.

LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. - A man killed during a driving lesson with his teen daughter in Laguna Beach has been identified.

What we know:

The fatal crash happened on Monday, May 26, around 4:15 p.m. on Coast Highway between Wesley and Montage Resort drives.

A preliminary investigation revealed the car, driven by a 15-year-old girl with a driver's permit, crashed through a fence in the upper parking lot of the now-shuttered Gelson's Market at 24 Monarch Bay Plaza, according police.

The vehicle then broke through a fence barrier, and rolled 40 feet down an embankment before flipping upside down onto the highway.

The girl sustained significant injuries and was taken to the hospital. She is expected to survive, police said.

Her father, James Politoski, 64, of Laguna Beach, was identified as the only passenger in the vehicle. He died at the scene.

What we don't know:

The cause of the collision remains under investigation.

The Laguna Beach Police Department is continuing its investigation into the incident.

Usually park at Gelsons lot. Take steps down and walk across to Montage area. You can sit on property and enjoy everything.
The beach is actually heaven. No need to go to Hawaii it’s way better

15 is fine to drive for some kids, but teaching in a parking lot that involves a cliff is Darwin material. I refuse to believe there wasn't a parking lot somewhere else that was on flat ground that they could have used.

This is very sad.

That kid will probably never drive again, and that will limit her life.
I saw someone say 15 is too young to drive. That's when you start to learn. In CA, at 15 1/2, you can take the written test and get your learners permit. Then you need driving hours. This is what that girl was doing.

Kids drive a little later these days. Only my oldest got her license at 16. The other two were 19 I think.
Now, the driving laws for minors in CA are pretty strict. We didn't have any restrictions when I was a kid. But now, an underage kid, cannot drive with minors in the car unless they are their siblings.

I hope this girl will be alright. It's not her fault. It was an accident.

I saw a video of where they crashed, they went through a heavy duty fence, so it wasn't like it was some public hazard.

I live over that way, I've parked behind Gelson's for Dana Point Summer Concerts in the Park. I crawled down a goat trail to get over there, and I figured that was where it happened because there there's no fence

Where they crashed makes no sense, must have jammed the gas HARD instead of the brake?

This is the last place I'd pick for a driving lesson BTW (Holiday Weekend traffic, busy parking lot, this is PCH by Salt Creek)

Driving instructors are the way to go. They have a brake pedal on their side of the car.

Back in ND as a kid, the farmer kids could get their permit/license at 14 to help on the farms. I got my license on my 16th bday (like most of us did) and had driven for a year on a permit.
Dont see anything unusual on that.
At 16, I drove into a ditch by just being too young & panicked on a curve doin 40-50 around a cliff. Luckily I got it out without injury & went into the safe side

When my dad decided it was time to teach me how to drive he drove me up to the jr high school. We swapped seats and had me circle the school a bunch of times. Once I figured out how hard to press the gas and brake he told me to pull out onto the road. I made a right turn and steered way too sharp running up onto the curb with the entire front tire. Probably why he didn’t teach me next to a cliff.

We drove around the neighborhood for a while and then he had me merge on the highway and I was scared shitless. I’ll never forget the first rime I went 55 mph. It felt like I was going 200 mph.

I took driver’s ed in high school. Unfortunately, there was only one teacher that year so we didn’t actually get to drive a real car. All we did was watch those faces of death driver accident films and use those little simulators where you sit in a little seat while a film plays of shit like people opening a car door while you pas, a kid’s ball rolling in the street and stuff like that. I think if you didn’t brake in time, a red light went off or something.

Speaking of those films, there is a fantastic documentary about how all that came about and the history of the films (with some creepy hidden surveillance stuff done later on that will blow your mind).

I believe the kid snapped and floored it off the embankment

Either way mom is going to get a huge payout and is probably bringing in car dealership brouchers to the hospital

And finally... in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a man allowed his eight-year old daughter to take the wheel of his car, and an accident ensued, that damaged seven other cars and injured six people.

Which once again proves my theory: Women can't drive.
