Buy out's work out like this:

- Team pays 2/3 of remaining monies owed on balance of contract

- Team can spread the payments over twice the remaining length of the contract

- Example: Player A signed a 3-year, 9 million contract. Team wants to buy him out after year 1. $ owed = $6 million; 2/3 of that = $ 4 million; term left = 2 years; double the term = 4 years. So they owe him $4 million over 4 years, or a $1 million a year cap hit

- This is why you see front loaded contracts. Guys making $10 million year 1, 8 million years 2, and down to $1 million a year in years 8, 9, and 10 of contracts. It makes a buyout easier at the end, as less money is owed, and it also lessens the cap hit throughout the length of the deal.

As if the Bruins don't have enough young talent, the Kessel trade (on the heels of the Rask trade), has now netted the B's Seguin, Spooner, and a big, mean D-man named Dougie Hamilton who is going to make a great Bruin, and the Leafs and Habs misreable for a long time.

Toronto Maple Leafs = worst run organization in hockey (their fans just haven't figured it out yet).

The Blackhawks finally found someone to take on that awful Brian Campbell contract - the same guy who signed him to that awful contract, Dale Tallon!
The deal saves the Hawks around 4 million bucks in cap hit - NICE!
They also dealt Troy Brouwer to Washington, clearing up another million or so.
This, along with the cap increase, means the Hawks can extend Patrick Sharp, cover some scheduled raises, and still be a player in free agency.

Florida is still way under the cap floor - wonder if they need a veteran goalie? The Hawks have an expensive underachiever named Huet they can unload! Make the call, Tallon!

Buyout means they can pay him so much money to be free of the contract. i believe they can do that after next year. Like I said, not sure though.

i know what a buyout is. i just didn't know how you alpy it to the cap.

he was bought out for $17.63 million, or two-thirds of the amount left on his contract. that would be paid out over eight years ($2.2 million a year), but the cap hit won't be calculated until the buyout is made. there's four years left.

no idea how to calculate the cap hit. 2.2 million would make sense. but really, if the guy isn't returning it shouldn't count against the cap.

The Bruins are should be competitive for quite some time as long as they can figure out how to sign all their young talent in a few years. I think the only issues they have going into next season are how to replace Recchi's leadership and whether or not to sign Ryder and Kaberle. Marchand is restricted.

Thomas had a great season but he was certainly helped by a strong group of defensemen in front of him. Chara, Seidenberg, Ferrence, McQuaid, Boychuk and Hamilton will make a nice physical presence in front of Thomas and Rask for the next 3 or 4 years.

yeah but what is counted against the cap when the wording is,"the cap hit won't be calculated until the buyout is made."?

i don't understand that. is that when the buyout is agreed upon or when it ends? is it the 2.2 million against the cap every year or is it less because it was a buyout?

It's when the buyout is agreed upon. All the monies are actually paid to the player up front I believe. Which is why it works for the union, as the player can make interest on the money. It's spread over a number of years for cap purposes, otherwise a buyout would be of little use to the teams (cap-wise).

He was a damn good D-man. Almost a point per game, +85 one year, a great career in the WHA before he was in the NHL. Bet I get you - it's the Hall of Fame, not the Hall of Very Good.

I'd like to know why Phil Housley doesn't get considered more. He's the 4th highest scoring d-man of all time, and hugely important in the emergence of US hockey in the 80's and 90's.
