That whole CHL WHL thing confuses the fuck out of me. But I've never claimed to follow it either. All I know is the ISLANDERS have a CHL affiliate in Odessa, TX named the Jackalopes and that's pretty fucking cool.

I love my Houston Aeros!! There was a couple of seasons I thought they could fold at any minute, but the Wild came in and made them their AAA affiliate.. I got to celebrate with the team on the ice when they won the Turner Cup in the old IHL..

We used to have an ECHL team here in SE Texas, the Texas Wildcatters. Now we have to drive to Houston to see the Areos or Austin to see the Texas Stars.

There are two CHL's, that's what's causing some confusion in this thread.

The Canadian CHL is comrpised of the teams in the WHL, OHL, QMJHL, and includes all of the junior hockey teams in Canada (and a few in the US). The operative word being "junior".

The American CHL is the Central Hockey League, which is a low level minor pro league, not even equal to the ECHL talent wise. It's about as low as you can go in pro hockey.

The Portland Winter Hawks are in the WHL branch of the first CHL, and they are not afiliated with the Chicago Blackhawks, though perhaps some Blackhawks draftees play there. There's also likely draftees from other teams there, as well as many undrafted players (as they're too young).

And minor league hockey is great. A good, economical way to enjoy the sport and see the stars of tomorrow (and sometimes yesteryear - just ask Sheldon Souray or Wade Redden).

All 8 teams are based in the southeastern USA. I don't think ANYBODY from this league will ever make it to the NHL. I even know the Louisiana team held open tryouts. Of course they're the worst team in the league.
3 of the cities used to have ECHL teams. Biloxi, Pensacola and Laffeyette.

The Portland Winterhawks (Blackhawks affiliate) are having an amazing season this year. Not sure how attendance is, but they are a lot of fun and worth the price.

I started following them because they gave an Islander prospect on the team and the are tied at 2 games a piece in the WHL semifinals. They are not however the Blackhawks affiliate.
