You'd be surprised how many Trumpers there are where I work in Vermont. They bashed Obama for 8 years and did the same to Hilary once she said she was running. They were quiet when I was bashing Dubya during the Bush years of tyranny. Although I was told by one that "people died so you can say that". Then I better not dishonour them by keeping quiet.Inessence wrote: You still live in the south? You must be completely surrounded by Trumpets. How much does that suck?

I thought one of the main reasons you Trumpers voted for him was because he was going to put Hillary in jail, and when I heard his campaign talking about how he wouldn't be pursuing charges after all, I just had to wonder what the right's response would be. Apparently making America great again is going to involve a whole lot less wall-building, swamp-draining, and Hillary-jailing than you guys were promised. Hook. Line. Sinker.
So, you wanted him to do all of those things?

While we’re still analyzing the election results and debating the importance of different factors to the final outcome, everyone agrees that white working class voters played a key part in Donald Trump’s victory, in some cases by switching their votes and in some cases by turning out when they had been nonvoters before.
And now that he’s about to take office, he’s ready to deliver on what he promised them, right? Well, maybe not so much:
President-elect Donald Trump abruptly abandoned some of his most tendentious campaign promises Tuesday, saying he does not plan to prosecute Hillary Clinton for her use of a private email system or the dealings of her family foundation, has an “open mind” about a climate-change accord from which he vowed to withdraw the United States and is no longer certain that torturing terrorism suspects is a good idea.
The billionaire real estate developer also dismissed any need to disentangle himself from his financial holdings, despite rising questions about how his global business dealings might affect his decision-making as the nation’s chief executive.
And it’s not just that; at the same time, the Trump administration and congressional Republicans are getting ready to move on their highest priorities, cutting taxes for the wealthy, scrapping oversight on Wall Street, and lightening regulations on big corporations.
Imagine you’re one of those folks who went to Trump rallies and thrilled to his promises to take America back from the establishment, who felt your heart stir as he promised to torture prisoners, who got your “Trump That Bitch” T-shirt, who was overjoyed to finally have a candidate who tells it like it is. What are you thinking as you watch this?
If you have any sense, you’re coming to the realization that it was all a scam. You got played. While you were chanting “Lock her up!” he was laughing at you for being so gullible. While you were dreaming about how you’d have an advocate in the Oval Office, he was dreaming about how he could use it to make himself richer. He hasn’t even taken office yet and everything he told you is already being revealed as a lie.
President-elect Donald Trump's supporters often chanted "lock her up" when he discussed his opponent, Hillary Clinton, at campaign rallies. But despite repeatedly promising to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate her, it looks like Trump might not pursue Clinton after all.
During the campaign, Trump made two kinds of promises to those white working class voters. One was very practical, focused on economics. In coal country, he said he’d bring back all the coal jobs that have been lost to cheap natural gas (even as he promotes more fracking of natural gas; figure that one out). In the industrial Midwest, he said he’d bring back all the labor-intensive factory jobs that were mostly lost to automation, not trade deals. These promises were utterly ludicrous, but most of the target voters seemed not to care.
The second kind of promise was emotional and expressive. It was about turning back the clock to a time when immigrants hadn’t come to your town, when women weren’t so uppity, when you could say whatever you wanted and you didn’t feel like the culture and the economy were leaving you behind. So Trump said he’d toss Hillary Clinton in jail, force everyone to say “Merry Christmas” again, and sue those dastardly liberal news organizations into submission.
And of course, there were promises — like building a wall on the southern border and making Mexico pay for it just so they know who’s boss — that claimed to serve a practical purpose but also had an important expressive purpose. And now one by one Trump is casting them all off.
So what are we left with? What remains is Trump’s erratic whims, his boundless greed, and the core of Republican policies Congress will pursue, which are most definitely not geared toward the interests of working class whites. He can gut environmental regulations, but that doesn’t mean millions of people are going to head back to the coal mines — it was market forces more than anything else that led to coal’s decline. He can renegotiate trade deals, but that doesn’t mean that the labor-intensive factory jobs are coming back. And by the way, the high wages, good benefits, and job security those jobs used to offer? That was thanks to labor unions, which Republicans are now going to try to destroy once and for all.

So President Pay-for-Play has offered up Betty De Vos for Education Sec. There's all kinds of issues with her, but for me this column from a think tank she and her husband fund says a whole fucking lot. The author changed the title because he got blow back. Originally it was called:
"Bring back child labor. Work is a gift our children can handle".
He has since dropped the "Bring Back Child Labor." It's worth a read if you really want to understand the mindset of De Vos (no fan at all of public education) as well. The comments answer back better than I can so they are worth a read.
Somehow I doubt this brain trust has their own kids drop out and work at these "character building jobs". And yes, high school dropouts are always the first to get hired when education is required.
The author didn't drop out, he went to college.

Yeah, drop out of school and work for minimum wage.If kids were allowed to work and compulsory school attendance was abolished, the jobs of choice would be at Chick-Fil-A and WalMart. And they would be fantastic jobs too, instilling in young people a work ethic, which is the inner drive to succeed, and an awareness of attitudes that make enterprise work for all. It would give them skills and discipline that build character, and help them become part of a professional network.

His most ardent supporters might raise a kerfuffle, but most I know round here who voted Trump just did so because they hate Democrats and they wanted Hilary stopped. They knew there wasn't going to be a wall, and didn't give a fuck about it anyway, they aren't Southern Klan Republicans. I've said before, it's too simple to tie this down to racists, hating women etc., you know, the real nasty fringe elements. Maybe he'll crash and burn horribly and the Democrats won't have to put much effort in to get back in front again. Although I think most of us left leaners would like them to sort their shit out and get more on track with what we want rather than us having to pick the lesser of 2 evils.dmbrocker wrote:

Re: President Trump
I agree a lot of people voted for Trump because they hate Hillary and view her as the greater of the two evils, but some of those even bought into his Hillary-jailing and wall-building promises. Problem is, it's getting harder and harder to find a presidential candidate who isn't the lesser of two evils today. What's next, President Blotzer with Carlos as his VP?MickeyG wrote:His most ardent supporters might raise a kerfuffle, but most I know round here who voted Trump just did so because they hate Democrats and they wanted Hilary stopped. Biggest problem with any of this is the idiotic idea that Trump would be the "lesser of evils". We perceive Clinton as "evil" so we elect this epitome of incompetence who will very likely bumble the country into uncharted levels of failure and collapse? You can take all the "nasty" elements off the table (which most certainly DID play a part) and Trump is still an amazingly stupid choice.

Re: President Trump
Yeah, but you have to remember, there are those who hold Hillary fully responsible for getting those four Americans killed in Benghazi, actually believe in the paranoid idea of a Clinton "body bags" list, e-mails, Clinton Foundation pay-to-play, etc., and believe America must stand against her at all costs because of all that. How much of that is actually true, though? Most likely a whole lot less of it than they think.exitflagger wrote:Biggest problem with any of this is the idiotic idea that Trump would be the "lesser of evils". Most of the people who voted for McCain and Romney over Obama were not just gonna switch because of Trump running his idiotic mouth. That core are staunch Republican and were voting anti Democrat/Hilary no matter what. They had plenty of reasons. Some would use gun control as a reason, some abortion. There are some racists/misogynists for sure but most can turned a blind eye to talk if it means stopping "the enemy".
You also have the "throw the toys out of the pram" element, like me who said fuck it and wrote in. It all made for a perfect storm.

I do not see Roe Vs. Wade ever being overturned anyways. We have been through 3 presidents who are pro-life and they never did nothing. Most law firms are not going to commit career suicide fighting over something that they won't win. Norma McCorvey aka Jane Roe who has been pro-life for almost 20 years filed for a hearing with the supreme court in 2005 and the court had no interest at the time.

Re: President Trump
I'm a little disappointed in the SS code names for this term's prez and VP... Pretty bland.. I was expecting something like Vag Man, Groper or Duke of NY... Mogul? Meh...
And Muse for Melania? More appropriate should be Meme, as I'm sure there will be plenty over the next four years..
Secret Service code names for Trump, Pence
The Secret Service has new code names for GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump and Indiana Gov. Mike Pence: Mogul and Hoosier.
Nearing the White House means you get a Secret Service detail, and that means the elite security agents need to have a new name buzzing into their ears.
The code names for the would-be heads of state generally skew toward the slightly witty, and each name in a family all start with the same letter. For example, President Barack Obama is "Renegade" and first lady Michelle Obama is "Renaissance."
Now that Trump and Pence have officially filled out their party's presidential ticket, Secret Service sources told CNN the agency's code name for the GOP candidates.
Trump is "Mogul."
Melania Trump, a former model, is "Muse."
Pence, the head of the Hoosier State, is "Hoosier."
Karen Pence, the governor's wife, is "Hummingbird."
Meanwhile, Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton is no stranger to the Secret Service. Clinton has had a Secret Service detail -- and will for life -- since her husband won the presidency.
Hillary Clinton, a fixture in US politics, is "Evergreen."
Former President Bill Clinton, her husband, is "Eagle."

It would be the same had Clinton won. After months of claiming that the election was rigged and voting machines changing votes, the Trump supporters would be doing the same thing and demanding recounts and revolution.

Hell, even as winners they're not handling it well. I had someone get my face the other day, his gloating had a strong whiff of desperation and anger. "We destroyed her!", I said something smart ass back about "I do not think that word means what you think it means" and the guy looked at my husband and told him to tell his "old lady" to STFU. By this time, it was sinking in to him that the whole "draining the swamp" and "lock her up" wasn't going to happen. Others, when reading or seeing that Trump's party wants to dismantle Medicare, Social Security, etc. the stuff they were depending on, refused to believe it "Oh that won't happen, Trump won't let it". Though their protests are getting more half-hearted as the days go on. And this is in Freaking Oregon.Insane Clown Potsie wrote:dtmfs wrote:I cant believe the whining, protests, talks of recounting and all that bullshit is still going on. shouldn't the "never trump" people be protesting outside Hillary's and calling for the heads of wasserman Shultz and brazile who made sure the guy who would've easily slaughtered trump in the election was pushed aside because "it was Hillary's" turn? one good guy out of the entire field and he gets fucked, but no one seems to be angered over the cheating they did for the queen.

The upcoming Donald Trump presidency promises to throw a lot of political traditions out the window.
Andrew Johnson was the last president without a pet.
Johnson and James K. Polk were the only presidents who went petless for their entire term. Commanders in chief have had everything from dogs and cats to bears, tigers and even a pygmy hippopotamus.

As long as I'm learning something, I figure I'm OK - it's a decent day.

The upcoming Donald Trump presidency promises to throw a lot of political traditions out the window. Among them: Trump doesn't have a pet.
For more than a century, every president has had a four-legged friend of some kind. Andrew Johnson was the last president without a pet.
Johnson and James K. Polk were the only presidents who went petless for their entire term. Commanders in chief have had everything from dogs and cats to bears, tigers and even a pygmy hippopotamus.
