We'll see how you feel about that 4-5 years from now.
It's fair value. Nobody has a crystal ball, but he's still young and is one of the most complete players in the NHL. Can score some points, play great defence, shut down the other team's best line, win faceoffs. He could play for me anytime. He's a notch below Toews/Datsyuk in terms of what he does.

Sounds about right. But here's the problem.....he's now getting paid what those two guys, who are notch above him are getting paid! Toews makes 6.5, Datsyuk makes 6.7.....and those guys are a point a game player! Hence.......TOO MUCH MONEY.

That's twice you've based it on points.
He's a Selke winner (beating out Datsyuk in the process) plus a faceoff and power play specialist.
It's not about individual rankings, it's about importance to a team.

The biggest testament to how good a player he is, is that I'm a Habs fan and singing his praises! :D

If the B's wanted to throw in an extra 500K/year, for what he means to the team and city, and what he's been through, so be it. He's essentially on the same level as Toews/Datsyuk. They may score a bit more than Bergeron, but Bergeron does a number of things better than them.

If I'm building a team - say the Canadian Olympic Team - he's on it (again).

I'm sorry but:

highbrow hockey fans < Gary Bettman

I strongly dislike the "I understand hockey better than you" - hockey fan.

I watched hockey all my life and I'll agree with a casual fan who says it's difficult to see the punk when you view highlights on youtube, on your ipohone....or even on sportscenter.

Make the god damn sport accessible for once ok?

Gary Bettman hurt the League more than anyone culd even imagine when he went with OLW/Versus and gave ESPN the finger but I believe all the highbrow fans hurt the League equally with their bad attitude.

And it's not a canadian vs american fan issue....noone ever demanded any changes to canadian telecasts.

A legend. They should hang his number in the rafters to kick off the season. Probably the most popular athlete in Boston. Maybe Brady or Ortiz might come close in a poll.

Chiarelli close to a well deserved extension.

6.5 mil, for a 60-point/season player? Chiarelli should be fired for that ridiculous contract.
I thought he would be in the $7 million range. And easily justifiable for him to be the top payed player on the team. He's a team leader. Look at when he scores points. Some of those playoff goals are worth 10 points in November.

Will he be benched/played minuscully liked he was in Vancouver after he couldn't win a faceoff to save his life?

Bullshit, dumbass. It's absolutely about points and individual rankings.....that's why players who score goals get paid the most. Now you want to pay the players who are 'important' to their teams the same amount of money as the guys who put the puck in the net?. You do realize we just had another lockout, right? And you do realize it was all the result of ridiculous money that these dumbass GMs have been handing out to players, RIGHT??

It would never bother me that a fan touched the cup. I don't care if Bieber is Canadian, that douchebag doesn't follow hockey.

My brother rubbed it in 2010. Fucker just happened to be at Stanleys the night before the parade. I forget which player brought it in, but he calls me from Stanleys at like 11:45 and tells me to get down there. If I didn't work for a living I'd have gone down there to see it. I did get 20 feet from it at this year's parade.

Were you born an idiot or did you have to work at it?
Pekka Rinne $7,000,000
Shea Weber $14,000,000
There's a couple of 50 goal scorers.
Oh wait, you'll spin that to mean centers only, right?
EatTheGlass wrote:Now you want to pay the players who are 'important' to their teams the same amount of money as the guys who put the puck in the net?
I don't own a team so whether I want to pay them or not doesn't apply here, dumbass.

Noooo, really? Thank God you're here!
EatTheGlass wrote:And you do realize it was all the result of ridiculous money that these dumbass GMs have been handing out to players, RIGHT??
So, first it's my fault for somehow allowing the Bruins to pay these contracts and now it's every GM's fault?
So why didn't you just say that you were pissed at the GM's for giving ridiculous contracts to Datsyuk and Toews? Would have made it a lot more civil in here.
EatTheGlass wrote:And to further compound my point that your GM is a dumbass, 7-mil/year for Rask is a fucking joke.
Wanna take a wild guess as to what Rask and Bergeron would have made on the open market?
Dumbass.

Seems a couple of people in here agree with me and nobody has agreed with you.
Wonder why that is?

First of all, Rinne isn't a 'two-way' forward, he's a goaltender...and guess what, he ain't worth 7-mil either. You want to look at a solid contract for a Conn-Smythe winning goaltender at the age of 26? Look at Jonathan Quick, not even at 6-mill.

Secondly, if you were smart, you'd know that 14-mill for Weber is NOT his cap hit....his cap hit...his cap hit is 7.8 mil (which is all that matters). And for a Norris-trophy winner, that's probably about right.

Facedown wrote:Wanna take a wild guess as to what Rask and Bergeron would have made on the open market?
Dumbass.
So you're arguing what the dumbass Boston GM has spent vs what some other dumbass GMs would spend? Great point.

Umm, maybe because they are BOSTON fans and can't possibly bear the thought of criticizing their own team?

I knew that and since we were talking salaries and not cap hits I didn't see a reason to bring it up. Me = smart.

I haven't argued anything about what they paid, you did. I said the years were too much.

It looks like Donald Fehr turned down MLBA to stay with the NHLPA. He's going after fighting in the game:

Fighting in the NHL has always been the subject of criticism within some circles, but it has nevertheless remained a part of the game. NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr might want to change that, based on a CBC/Radio-Canada report.

Recently, he’s been meeting with players on the issue and brought it up in an April 25 meeting with agents.

Please note that all quotes were originally in French and have been put through Google Translate.

“Nothing concrete has been announced to us, but I felt that Fehr was motivated by a genuine desire to address the issue of fighting,” said agent Robert Sauvé.

Former NHL player Gilles Lupien, who isn’t happy about the state of violence in hockey, was also in attendance.

“Fehr told us he was trying to understand the dynamics of fights and he was struggling to understand an athlete can get to defeat another or to injure him in the course of a game. It is a culture that has not known when was working in other sports,” Lupien explained.

Lupien wants to see coaches pushed for their players fights, believing that will address the problem.

Meanwhile Sauvé dismissed the argument that reducing fighting might hurt interest in the NHL.

“Look what’s happening in the QMJHL. Some measures have been taken in recent years to reduce the number of fights. There never was so little, and the audience have never been higher!”

Losing fighting in Hockey would be lame.

On a sidenote the Panthers signed Gomez to a one year deal at $900,000! Actually for the price it's not too bad. Low risk/high reward potential. He had 15 points in 39 games last season with San Jose. If he gets similar numbers with the Panthers that is pretty good. Wonder how the Habs will react as we are in the same division as them next year.

If Gomez floats as much as he did here, the Habs will be thrilled he's playing with the Panthers. Will be shocked if the Panthers finish anywhere other than last in the new Atlantic division next year.

Sad story out of the Acadie-Bathurst training camp.

http://www.tsn.ca/chl/story/?id=429635

BATHURST, N.B. -- A 16-year-old prospect for the Acadie-Bathurst Titan junior hockey team has died while skating during a training session with the club.

The New Brunswick team says Jordan Boyd collapsed on the ice and was taken to hospital.

The release says the team's medical team tried to revive the boy several times while he was on the ice.

The club also says Boyd had a medical evaluation before training camp and didn't appear to have any medical problems that prevented him from participating.

An autopsy has been ordered.

The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League says Boyd played right wing and had just been drafted this year.

Nets minority owner Bruce Ratner has outbid MSG for the rights to redevelop the Nassau Coliseum.

No clue what this means. Could the Isles stay put? Could the AHL's Sound Tiger's move there?
