Mean Machine - once you get past the fact that soccer is such a total poofter sport, you can see the beauty of this shitty teethed Brit version of The Longest Yard. Universally loathed Vinnie Jones is excellent in the Limey Paul Crewe role. Jason Stathom makes a memorable appearance as the psychopath. Worth your watch, you hooligan homos - 8/10

Sounds like Green Street Hooligans. And you're right. Movies about soccer are insanely fucking boring. You just cannot make the subject at hand interesting or entertaining at all.

Green Street Hooligans was slightly less entertaining, only cause Bilbo Baggins is completely less believably of a soccer BA as Vinnie Jones. Not that Green Street was a shitty movie. Just slightly less believable.

With all this jazz movie talk I decided to watch Bird the other night. I'd give it 8/10.

That's like comparing Goodfellas to Wise Guys. Football Factory still pisses all over Hooligans, though.

Julia & Julia 0/10 Ugh. Here's another example of a movie that should have never, ever been made. This movie is about a young woman - played by the always bland and boring Amy Adams - cooking recipes out of Julia Child's cook book. Contrasted with pointless flashbacks of the life of the real Julia Childs played by Meryl Streep. Uh, okay.

Well why not? People want to see a movie about the life of Julia Childs, says absolutely no one on Earth.

Guess I'll go watch Battleship again. At least that had shit blowing up.

Should have been nominated for Best Picture.

Jake Gyllenhaal can sure pull off playing a sleazy piece of garbage. Blows my mind that this was the same guy who played in Bubble Boy.

Kingdom of Heaven Director's Cut- 7.5/10

I never saw the theatrical cut so I can't make a comparison. The version I saw was perfect from every standpoint except substance. Ridley Scott is capable of making beautiful, entertaining movies, but he'll never make a movie like The Deer Hunter or Truffaut's The Woman Next Door something similar. And neither will Academy Award winning screenwriter William Monahan either.

The Secrets in Their Eyes- 8/10

Argentinian crime-drama film that won the Academy Award for Foreign Language Film a few years ago... The acting and the script are excellent: Soledad Villamil is just fantastic. My only quibble is that some of the dialogue is too... uh "Quentin Tarantinoized", with pop culture references and vulgarity that is unnecessary. My Spanish is weak so it may just be the American translator who did the subtitles.

Used Cars- 6/10

The first 45 minutes were funny, but it started to drag after the first half. Anybody who has been in sales will appreciate the humor though, and any Kurt Russell movie is at least watchable.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo - Fincher version 8/10 Been ages since I've seen this film and I forgot just how good it was. Even on FX with endless commercials it sill worked for me. The casting was spot-on perfect and that soundtrack . . . Reznor and Ross, could not get any better.

Valhalla Rising - 3/10 - What a brilliant and bowl moving waste of time. It starts out interesting then sucks the life right out of ya before ending with a kick in the balls. I suppose some will find it totally spiritual leaving the rest trying to find the cream filling. Personally, I want my time back.

Angels of Darkness or "Styria" - 6/10 - Eleanor Tomlinson and Stephen Rea are a solid duo with a good story line in a well directed film but since I just re-watched Byzantium it fell short of drawing me in. I'll give it another shot down the road and will probably give it higher marks.

The Big Wedding - 8/10 - Great easy to digest hilarious flick with an endless cast of actors and well written characters. The jabs keep going all the way to the end without any dry spells or going over the top. Meet the Fockers with twice the chuckles.

7/10 - Re-watched "Used Cars" not long ago and it still knocked me over. It's hard to rate older flicks with the higher expectations of today's films but this one continues to hold up in my book. Not a treasure classic but still a kick in the pants. After being in sales in my youth it did the same for me. Kurt Russell in his prime.

The commercial they shoot on the competitor's lot never fails to slay me. "That's too fuckin' high!"

Generation Iron - 4 of 5

Updated version of "Pumping Iron", the classic 70's bodybuilding documentary featuring a peak Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno competing for the title of Mr. Olympia.

This new version features Modern Monsters Branch Warren, Kai Greene and Phil Heath as Phil works to attain his 8th Mr. Olympia title.

If you dig lifting and doc's, you'll like it very much.

My favorite parts include a scene when Phil Heath tells Branch Warren if he keeps pushing so hard in the gym he's going to get injured and be out of competition and Branch says "my last two injuries weren't even in the gym, so he doesn't know what he's talking about", then immediately after he gets thrown from a horse and tears a leg muscle.

Also, Kai Greene is pretty smart and a super talented painter and artist.

To Kill a Mockingbird - 10/10 Perfect film. Too many classic scenes to name a fave, but I always weep like a baby during the final court scene.

"Miss Jean Louise, stand up. Your father's passing." What an amazing scene.

Whiplash: 7/10

Great acting, great music, but basically GI Jane in terms of plot and realism.

I watched The Wolf Of Wall Street again last night. I'm inclined to give it a 10 just based on how watchable it is. Scorsese has a way of making his movies so damn watchable, no matter how many times you've seen them, especially with Wolf, Goodfellas, and Casino.

Don't mess with Malone!

I wonder if Malone ever went back to that town to bang Cynthia Gibb.
