RIP George Blanda

Post by Luminiferous »

Remember watching him back in the Madden coached Raiders days.. The guy was a true legend.

Football legend George Blanda dead at 83

Pro football Hall of Famer George Blanda, who racked up more than 2,000 points in a record 26-year career, has died at age 83, the Oakland Raiders announced Monday.

A quarterback who doubled as a placekicker, Blanda retired in 1975 at age 48. During stints with the Raiders, the Chicago Bears, Baltimore Colts and the Houston Oilers, he scored a then-record 2,002 points, including 236 touchdown passes.

Blanda died after a brief illness, the Pro Football Hall of Fame announced.

Blanda was the NFL Player of the Year in 1970, the season that a string of last-minute touchdown passes or field goals led to a string of Raiders wins and one tie in five straight games. Raiders owner Al Davis, a personal friend, once called him "the greatest clutch player the game of pro football has ever known."

"Our heart goes out to his wife Betty and the Blanda family, and we grieve with them for our great friend," the team said.

It was George's ghost making the Packers O-line jump offside all Monday night.

Seriously, that's flat out insane to think about. I can't imagine anyone ever coming close to that....Makes me wonder who's in second.

If I have to go through one more summer of Favre will he or won't he I may just kill myself. Goddamn that's torture. Although that would be like 370 hours of programming ESPN will have to fill if it doesn't happen.

You think you hate the worldwide leader now? Have you seen how they're covering the Miami Heat already this season? They sent 3 fucking guys down to Florida to cover the goddamn training camp.

"Heat Index" could be the gayest sports gimmick ever.

Jesus. Too bad CNN/SI essentially failed in their attempt to be a tv alternative. I would love to see SI start their own set of 24 hr channels. I know it seems as if their are a million now, but I don't count the Fox Sports stuff, and I believe SI has the resources and journalist to battle with ESPN and their talking heads. Their partnership with Real Sports on HBO is proof of that. Don't get me wrong...I love some ESPN programming. NFL Countdown, 30 for 30's, Outside the Lines, ESPNEWS for postgames, PTI (although haven't watched in a while). I used to love the Sports Reporters but if I have to listen to Lupica, Bob Ryan, Albom, and the rest of the East Coast elite talk about the Yankees, Red Sox, Celtics, and Patriots anymore I may go postal. And that's a shame because that used to be a terrific show (Bring Back Whitlock!!!!).

Oh and before I forget....RIP George.

Howard Stern should consider going 24 hours with a channel of programming like he has with Ferrall every night. Here in Chicago, the 3 local shows absolutely murder ESPN's radio shows in the book and it's because they talk sports like you or I would and the public responds. ESPNs 'courteous and cute' approach to reporting is condescending vanilla garbage.

I was pretty sure I could've won the Staff Impression contest with my Ferrall voice.

I don't watch much sporting news anymore, it's like everything revolves around Favre, the cowgirls, Vick, the Patriots and now the Jets. They'll spend 20 minutes breaking down Vick's game play then blow by the highlights of any non flashy team.
