QUESTION for LONG-TIME YANKEES/RED SOX FANS

Post by JinglesTheChristmasMouse »

The rivalry is hot now because they've both been good teams the past few years.

But what about when they were also-rans, like in the parts of the the 1960s, '70s, '80s and '90s ?

Was there really a rivalry when they were sub-par teams, fighting to reach a .500 winning percentage ?

I ask this because I think of the Raiders and Steelers from the '70s - bitter rivals. But when they became cellar-dwellers, it was like "Oakland who?" "Pittsburgh who?" Yawn.

The Rivalry started when The Red Sox sold Babe Ruth to the Yankees.
At the time The Sox were the winning-est baseball team of all time.
In the next 86 years the Yankees would steal this title,
while the Sox would come very close winning it all a couple times,
only to lose the W.S. 7th game in 46, 67, 75 & 86.

The legend grew over these 86 years, and yes the rivalry was always there.
Try looking up the 1978 season.

QUESTION for LONG-TIME YANKEES/RED SOX FANS

I remember the 1978 season. The Yanks made a great comeback. Guidry should've been MVP.

But even when both teams weren't contenders the rivalry was still hot?

By the way, 1986, Dave Stapleton had been Bill Buckner's late-inning replacement all season. But in Game 6 of the World Series, the Red Sox manager decided to let Buckner stay in the game so he'd be on the field for the final out when Boston became World Champs.

Buckner shouldn't have been blamed at all (and have to carry it around for the rest of his life). It was the manager's fault completely.

Some rivalries are great no matter how good the teams are.

Not being from either New York or Boston, but being a Yankees fan since '76 when I watched them get their asses handed to them by the Big Red Machine,I can honestly say that I don't really give two shits about the Sox.I think the rivalry comes more from the Boston side than anything though I could be (and probably am) wrong.Being Canadian,I hate the fucking Blue Jays more than any other team.I admit,I do love watching the Sox lose though..lol

It pisses me off when people see my Yankees hats or shirts and assume I'm one of those front-running bandwagon jumpers, but like I said I've been a fan since '76 when I was 7 years old, mostly cause my dad was a Yankees fan from the mid-30's on and he had an endless supply of stories about the great players from back in the day.I've never cheered for any other team,or ever will

The Boston/NY rivalry is big on both sides and has been forever. It has had some lulls over the years when one or the other team went through a down cycle but it's certainly been there since Williams and DiMaggio were just starting out. It was big again in the late 70's and pretty much has been a big deal since then at least in both cities. It's just that it has become more prominent nationally since the mid 90's due to all the cable networks.

I think Williams/Dimaggio got it hot after Frazee sold Ruth.

That was the debate then. Who is the better player, Williams or Dimaggio? .406 or 56? The one game playoff in '49. I can't imagine there was too much of a rivalry after Frazee fucked the franchise. I'm sure people in Boston were pissed.

As far back as I can remember they've always hated each other.
