That was badass, and those detuner things he had on the tuning pegs were badass, too. I've never seen those before.

I have. They were developed back in the 90s by an instrument maker whose name I forget in partnership with the jazz bassist named Michael Manring. You could flick a switch like he does in this video and change the tuning of the chair before strings. That meant dozens of different configurations. Not only that but the bass was fretless.
