Metallica Covering Elton - “Funeral For A Friend / Love Lies Bleeding”

Metallica Covering Elton - “Funeral For A Friend / Love Lies Bleeding”

I get that it’s the edgiest thing on the internet to give Metallica shit but they really don’t have to be this good or put in this much effort.

Pretty ambitious and respectful for a one-off tribute imo. I remember years back Slash was whining about how he and Velvet Revolver “didn’t know” any Van Halen songs when they were asked to do the VH Rock Hall induction. Like, “Ok, then learn some, bitch!” Instead they totally halfassed it and it sucked.

This is cool. This is how it’s done.

Not bad, but my favorite instance of a thrash band covering Sir Elton is Flotsam & Jetsam's cover of "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting":

Tuning it so low is hilarious.

Check out the 1991 Two Rooms album for some great EJ covers.

Pity EJ never did a full rock album. This, Pinball Wizard, Saturday Night, Kiss the Bride … he could bring it. The 70s EJ Band were one of the best ever.

This is not even one iota different from how I was expecting it to sound before I clicked the link. This is simply amazing

Damn, that's ambitious. Metallica really does always kill it when they do covers.

That was cool!
I was expecting something like those "noodles" (or how did they call them?) where Kirk and Robert did some high school level jams on local tunes on tour. But this was well rehearsed and everything!

They nailed it. They've always had a way with covers, and I love that it still sounds like Metallica instead of just a straight, paint-by-numbers cover. I'm not the kind of person to be starstruck, but Elton is one of the few stars I think I'd be shitting bricks playing in front of. Absolute fucking legend, and probably a total bitch if you fuck it up.

great version, the original is a classic. the 70's John/Taupin stuff is untouchable.

my favorite part, though, was seeing how much Elton himself seemed to be enjoying it.

He seems to be in his "happy grandfather" phase, and would probably be proud of you anyhow for stepping on stage.

I don't know the originals but the vocal phrasing, esp in the verses, reminded me a lot of Thin Lizzy. If that's a faithful cover, I'm sure Phil wouldn't have been able to publicly admit 'borrowing' from a pop star back then, but it wouldn't have stopped him actually doing so.

I think that's a James thing, more than an Elton thing.

I thought the exact same thing, but as Mojo said, I think that's a Hetfield thing. Plus Metallica covered Thin Lizzy a few years ago and James is a fan.

Nice job. Elton and Bernie seemed to enjoy it.

I also like Dream Theater's version from 1995: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPSzokpzJ9g

That was great!

It must be a great feeling to absolutely crush a cover of a tricky song with the guys who wrote it staring at you from the front row

8 minutes of a journey, absolutely outstanding. James Hatfield is one of the best metal rhythm players there are.
