Red Sox sign Bobby Jenks 2yrs/12mil.
They have also brought back Lenny DiNardo to the minors.

I'm half happy about the Jenks signing. At the worst he's a 2010 version of Pappelbon, but with Paps coming out in the 7th or 8th it's not that bad.

His perpherals have steadily declined over the last 3 years. Check this out.
IP went from 61.2 - 53.1 - 52.2
H went from 51 - 52 -54 (despite lower IP)
WHIP went from 1.10 - 1.28 - 1.37
BB/9 went from 2.5 - 2.7 - 3.1
BAA has gone from .230 - .250 - .260

A lot of that could be contributed to luck. Situations he's had no control over ( aside from BB/9 ). Like his 4.44ERA ( arguably one of the worst ways to guage a pitcher's performance next to wins/losses ) which was offset by his FiP at 2.59. This leads me to believe he's in room for some serious improvement.

Like for instance his K/9 has risen. He just seems to me to have been in some pretty unlucky situations. Especially playing in front of a worse defense than what the Mighty Red Sox will put behind him. Considering his FB rate and BABIP. This could be a very good signing, more so thinking about the market right now.

Jenks/Bard/Paps could be pretty lethal. All they need now IMO is a LOOGY and the team is done.

Dinardo? I was happy to see him go, and happy to see his successes in Oakland. I still don't trust the guy, but since he has options it's nice to have someone to call up in case of emergency. At 30 it's very rare to see improvement.

Kill-Your team almost had the greatest closer of all-time saving games for them in 2011:

NEW YORK -- Mariano Rivera admitted the unthinkable had been a possibility.

The Boston Red Sox offered him a chance to turn in his pinstripes and switch sides in baseball's fiercest rivalry.

"It was real. It was real," he said Thursday.

While Boston made an offer to the great closer, Rivera accepted a $30 million, two-year contract from the Yankees, the only major league team for which he's ever played.

He was back at Yankee Stadium, two days after finalizing his deal, to assist with the team's holiday food drive, in which fans could exchange 30 pounds of food for two tickets to select games next year.

While Rivera didn't want to leave New York, he was happy to hear from the Red Sox.

"I thanked them, because they took me into consideration," he said. "This is business and the Yankees did the right thing, and I'm here."

Rivera said negotiations never reached the stage of a dialogue with Boston and he never envisioned himself in a Red Sox uniform.

"It definitely would have been different," he said. "I don't think the Yankees would allow that to happen. I just had to make sure I had a job, and the Yankees did that."

That was taken at Indians' spring training in Winter Haven, Florida (the last year before they moved out to Arizona). My son was born 5 days later so as you can imagine my wife was about to pop.

As we were waiting to meet him he said that if my wife went into labor right then and there we'd have to name the kid Bob in his honor.

I gotta hand it to the guy, he was still getting around pretty well and throwing out first pitches and shit after age 90.

And you really can't say enough about his WWII service. The guy left the game in the middle of his prime - would have won 300 games, EASY.

When asked what the greatest game he won was, he said "World War II."

Lucky prick, :D I spent my teens about 20 miles away from his hometown, been to the museum there and saw some cool memorabilia, but was never lucky enough to meet him, cool that you did being a big baseball fan as you are.

A 1 inning pitcher for 2 million a year? This is either disgustingly brilliant, or incredibly stupid. I can't figure out which one yet. The price for relief pitchers ( and frankly the selection sucks ) this year is insane.

A 34 year old lefty specialist with poor control. This could be like when they picked up Mike Myers ( specifically to pitch to Ortiz it seems ). Except that Ortiz can't hit LHP anymore and I copied this from another website. Adrian Gonzalez's against him: 3 for 15, 8Ks.

Apparently there's a pretty fine line between Stephen Hawkings and Forrest Gump.

Since the MFY missed out on the two big FA signings, and the pool has pretty much dwindled. I think Cashman is going make a pretty big trade soon. They have the prospects, and the money to defer.

Astros agreed to a 1 year deal with Bill Hall.

Except this time around the other teams have the upper hand. They know NY is desperate after losing out on the big names this off season. They won't take just any old offer from NY, they will make them pay through the nose. Look at them to have to give up better and/or more prospects than they normally would and also look for them to have to eat a big contract for an underperforming player. There was a rumor they contacted Seattle about Hernandez but the Mariners have him under contract and have no reason to trade him.

its a joke to keep stating the Yankees lost on "2" free agents this off-season.
the only player they wanted was Lee. all their focus was on Lee, not Crawford.
let's get the story right people.

Lee was the #1 target. the Yankees were not going to seriously sign another free agent before signing Lee.

Had Crawford not signed before Lee went to Philly, you can rest assured that NY would have sent a Brink's truck to his house. Lee may have been target #1, but make no mistake that Crawford would have been target #2. It has to be killing them that Crawford and Gonzalez went to Boston and that Lee went to Philly.

Wasen't long ago I was hoping the phils would bring him in , he's inconsistant but has some pop, don't know how good he is with a glove though. I know his brother was a stud at one point but got hit with a pitch or line drive or something, can't remember his name though.

WTF? Guess juan wasen't his brother, thought for sure with a name like that they were blood, then again maybe that names like johnson in the DR.

Yankees had no interest in Crawford. Cashman even admitted he met with him to drive the price up for Boston (which evidently worked, to some extent).

Yankees are smart enough to know their current LF is not much of a dropoff from Crawford.

As I've said before, he's a good player, just not $20M per year good. Neither was Werth, but Crawford's a much better player than Werth, for whatever it's... uh.. worth.

King Felix wanted to stay in Seattle too, he loves it there.

I wouldn't necessarily say team's have the "upper hand". Remember Cashman was able to trade Sheffield. Unfuckingbelieveable.

He seemed to improve quite a bit both hitting and fielding-wise after a short stint in the minors last season. Maybe he'll have a real breakout year, who knows?

He'll share first-base duties with Adam Lind. They have a combined 85 innings of experience there.

I dunno, wish SkyDog's reference to the Jays making an offer had led to a signing, though. :|
The Royals are, understandably, asking for a great deal in return for Greinke. The club is reportedly looking for even more than Travis Snider and Kyle Drabek in a deal with Toronto, a package that the Blue Jays are not willing to part with regardless.

it'll never happen( they don't have the cash) but how crazy would it be for philly to get him?

halladay
lee
oswalt
hamels
grienke

that'd be one sick rotation.

I'm thinking the braves will try to counter the Lee signing and try and work out a deal for a bunch of prospects for him, i could see Texas or the angels getting ivolved too.

How much of a role did the treatment of Cliff Lee's wife by Yankee fans in the ALCS affect his signing with Philly instead of NY? Certainly if NY had made Lee a ridiculous offer it probably wouldn't have been an issue, but as long as all the offers were reasonably close as it appears they were, how much of a factor do you think it played?

Yeah basically what i've read and heard him say is he and his family loved it there, that and the thought of pitching with the other 3 made it an easy decision, it had nothing to do with anything else.
