The Boston Herald is reporting that Brad Penny is close to signing a 1y 5m with the Mighty Red Sox. This is pending a physical and is incentive laden. The Boston med team looked at his shoulder reports and are confident there will be no issues, which sidelined him last season ( I know as he was on my Fantasy Team :x ).

I like this one. He could fit in the #5, rotating with Buchholz, Masterson and possibly Bowden. Low risk....high reward with Wakefield's rumoured retirement, this could really help. They still have interest in Schmoltz, but he won't be ready until May....if at all.

Also It seems that they've all but given up on trying to bring Tek back. Let him go. He complained about being pinch hit for in the ALCS. Which shows me the guy is about as team first as the MFY Captain. Let him get a Veteran Minimum somewhere else.........maybe they'll let him off a tee.

Also for the rumor of Manny becoming a Yank ( which happens in my nightmares ). I believe it's impossible right now. A team can only sign 3 type A Free Agents a season. They did that.

You can tell by how Arod who is a superior SS, had to play 3rd. That's not exactly putting the team first.....it's putting 'you' first.

You mean why wouldn't defensive liability Jeter move to make room for gold glover A-Rod ?

Itjogsamongus wrote:Did the Yankee management even approach Jeter to do that? They might not have wanted him to do so from a symbolic standpoint. And who's to say he could play third? A-Rod has a much better arm.

But if he resigns after 2010, that will be interesting. Because he shouldn't be playing SS after that point and now he can't play first. Maybe move him to center like Robin Yount or something.
I agree that Jeter's defense has much room for improvement. But he has won a GOLD GLOVE, so that has to count for something yes?
A-Rod at SS is such a reach. Back then it might have been possible, but the move was made to have Alex play 3rd and since then his body does not resemble a SS one bit. I'm sure Alex is happy at his current 3B position.
So let's leave that subject alone.

Maybe Jeter will move to CF or elsewhere. Who knows!
Right now he's our SS and I would like to think he will work hard to improve his range, his quickness and play much better defensive SS in '09

Yeah, Jeter SHOULD have moved for A-Rod. However, for as much flack as A-Rod gets now, imagine the reaction to every error he'd make at SS? Forget it, they'd crucify the guy.

Anyway, Jeter's contract is a great topic for discussion. He's horrendously overpaid now. He's probably like an $8M per year type of player, a bit of a cut from his current salary north of $22M per. But the Yankees know they HAVE to bring him back, and he knows that too. It'll be an interesting negotiation.

He could probably play CF or LF, unless of course Robinson Cano hasn't been jettisoned by then, in which case I guess they could try him at 2nd.

But damn, imagine being the guy signed to replace Jeter at SS?

This topic regarding Jeter and the position he plays and where he
might be in the future is something we can discuss at a later day.

The fact is this:
Currently is the our SS, A-Rod is at 3b and Cano at 2b. Who knows what will happen in the future.
Right now I'm not worried about Jeter at SS. I'm far more concerned
with winning another World Series ring.
I know full well Jeter is not the best defensive SS, but maybe this off-season he will work on footwork, agility, speed, etc....I hope so because any improvement to his range would be a big plus.

I hope Cano returns in '09 with a great attidude and work ethic.
Which do I want to improve? His defense or his hitting?
Can I be greedy and ask for both?
It's been reported that he and Kevin Long worked on tweaking his stance
this off-season in hopes of improving his eye at the plate and keep him
from swinging at balls.

On this team Cano might bat 8th.
Now that is a deep line-up indeed!

Source: Dodgers contact Dunn

Apparently, the Dodgers aren't going to sit around all winter, waiting for Manny Ramirez to beg to come back. They now have Adam Dunn on their shopping list.

The Dodgers contacted Dunn's agent, Greg Genske, over the holidays, according to an executive of a team interested in Dunn. And that creates an intriguing option for both parties.

Dunn has also drawn interest from the Cubs, Nationals, Mariners and Orioles. But adding the Dodgers to that mix gives him another contender to consider. The Cubs had believed to be his top choice before the Dodgers entered the mix.

That's where I somewhat disagree with you.

Professional athletes making millions should not be out all night boozing it up.

There's plenty of time for that when they retire.

There are very few who are able to do it.

Why the Yankees have a hair policy, but NOT a curfew or alcohol policy, is beyond me. I mean.....it's New York, for Pete's sake.

Exactly.

The training is different now.

Back in those days it was a bunch of stickball players.

Now it's about precision athletics and the hungover guy just won't be able to compete with the finely tuned athlete.

I already miss the steroid era.

I am having fun and exaggerating.

However, I get most of my Yankees stuff from Mike and The Mad Dog, or now just Mike Francesca. And he is very tied in to the organization.

If you listen to him and read between the lines, Cano likes to have fun, stay out late, and it has become a concern to the organization. Obviously he's a young millionaire, and has a right. And when Bowa left, who stayed on his case, he struggled this year.

But it was made clear that Melky will not be back because they viewed him the way they viewed Billy Martin w/Whitey Ford and Mickey Mantle. Maybe he's just a fallguy, but that's the way it is. They didn't like the Fric and Frac thing.

Everyone knew Giambi loved that shit as well, but he performed when he wasn't dying or stopped taking HGH.
I seem to be learning a lot about the Cano and Melky "off the field" relationship.
It's been reported many times over on the Yes network telecasts that
those 2 are very close. I imagine they are the best of friends.

Now you say Melky won't be back in '09 because of his relationship w/Cano?
I find that hard to believe.
Are you sure his lack of effective play in '08 led him to be demoted and lost the starting CF job???

There is no way that Melky's friendship with Cano would "write his ticket out of town". With an organization that's battled rumours of being "cold and strictly job-like" in the clubhouse the last few years. You would think that would be welcome.

Maybe the FO is concerned with Cano's off field partying ( see: Lowe ), but that wouldn't be the reasoning for Cabrerra. Melky is prone to be traded because of his own performance. Get something for him while his value is still high enough to. As for Robinson, he's still a kid. They need some sort of clubhouse leader or mentor for the young players. All teams do...or should. Like a McKeon type.

There was just a quick bit on a local station that at some point, the Sox attempted to get Han-Ram back from the Marlins but they didn't go for it.
Would love to know what was offered.

I'm not too sure I believe it entirely. I heard about it yesterday, if it is true and it was leaked. I think Theo would be pissed.

Now supposably since the Recession going full fucking swing, and not a Goddamn thing being done on their new stadium. It's not far-fetched to think of another Marlins firesale. What I heard was Ellsbury, Buchholz, and possibly Masterson or Bowden.

The Marlins crave both Ellsbury and Lester. Lester is off limits, that's where the deal fell through if you believe that. Why would they desire Ellsbury? Didn't they trade away Cabrerra last season for Maybin, the CF of the future?

I think it's a bunch of media spin if anything. Hanley was the Organization's top-prospect, whose turned into a HOF caliber player. I would still do that deal in a second though again, if I had the chance. I think where all this stems from is reports Theo was none to happy on his return to hear about the trade. Again if you believe that, because the Winter Meetings players all said Theo was on speaker phone the whole time. It's a bunch on media spin. Like Teix is going to the Yankees.

Wait.

I am not saying its the only reason, but it certainly plays a part. And it has been spoken about in the media openly. There's one thing about having a looser club house. Damon and Giambi did a lot for that. There's another thing have guys fucking around. That's what Cano/Cabrera were doing. Its just the facts and its no secret. Its discussed on sports radio all the time. The two are inseparable.

And despite the friendship, there is a huge discrepancy in talent. Cano took a step back, but Melky ended up in the minor leagues. If Melky was as good as Cano, would they be doing this? Of course not, everyone knows there is a double standard. But because he is essentially a very good fourth outfielder and not a regular, coupled with what they perceive as a negative influence, he is most likely gone. And he was off to Milwaukee for Cameron who already sucked it up in Shea but the deal fell through.

Bubby Brister was traded because he insulted Jeter for not joining in on a brawl. And once he said it, people knew it and it happened real quick.
Oh Okay. I see your point better now. It basically is a Derek Lowe situation, except that Cabrerra hasn't achieved what Lowe has.....who according to sources the FO was pretty leinent with for some time.

I'm still surprised the Cameron deal fell through. Discounting his age, he's still a great OF. That's something the MFY have lacked for a bit now.

Varitek's "pitch calling" and "game control" is highly overrated. That's something used to describe any catcher that can't hit worth a shit... and it's propaganda for the Boras camp to justify the multi-million dollar contract he's foolishly seeking for Tek.

Right.

Because they weren't saying those things about him when he could hit.

And the team never collapsed when he went down with injuries.

His pitch calling and game control are great. His arm is shitty and now his bat is.

LOL

Ok Jake.

2001 and 2006. Both seasons in which he missed significant time. Both seasons in which they had meltdowns.

In 2006 they were 2 games down. He missed one month. They were 9 games back when he returned.

In 2001 they were up 1 game when he went down. They finished 13 games back. Yes, Martinez going down played a big part in their fall, but he started trying to gas everyone and blew out his RC. Look at his numbers pre-Varitek injury vs post.

He was unhittable. Then Varitek went down and he developed "arm problems".

Even if the man is "magic" behind the plate, the fact that he turns Boston into an NL 8-man lineup hurts more than any perceived positive influence he has on the pitching staff. Giving up 3-4 surefire outs per game is probably not worth the .5 (being generous) of a pitcher's ERA he may be responsible for.

LOL

Nice.

And nice job tap dancing over to the "NL is inferior" side of things.

In both 2001 and 2006, each time he went down, the team ERA went up over 1 run per game and the team melted down each time.

But hey, you knew that already, right ?

The NL is inferior. Since interleague play began the records are pretty even, but in the past few seasons the AL slaughters the NL. The best hitters are in the AL, and the AL features better pitchers - how many NL guys have come over and had great success in the AL? Not a whole lot.

I don't give a fuck that the NL has won a few World Series lately - that's called small sample size.

We've all had this argument before.

Once again I call that small sample size. His game calling is overrated. It's impossible to quantify, anyway. Pitch execution is more important than pitch direction/selection, anyway.
