Report: Wrestling legend Verne Gagne investigated in death of man, 97

Pioneer Press
Updated: 02/19/2009 10:05:25 AM CST

Minnesota wrestling legend Verne Gagne is under investigation in the death of a fellow resident at a Bloomington care facility, a local television station is reporting.

Police said Gagne, 82, threw his roommate, Helmut R. Gutmann, 97, to the floor on Jan. 26, breaking his leg and injuring his head, according to KMSP-TV. Gutmann was treated for his injuries, but was later rehospitalized, the station said. He died Saturday.

The men lived at Friendship Village, a care facility for people with Alzheimer's disease and dementia. Both had Alzheimer's-related dementia, KMSP-TV said.

Police are investigating.

Gagne, a native of Robbinsdale, was a longtime presence in wrestling circles.

In 1960, he formed the American Wrestling Association with a stable that eventually included Hulk Hogan and Jesse "The Body" Ventura. The association toured civic centers and dominated televised wrestling in the 1960s and '70s.

Well Verne really could "shoot" on people back in the day.

Ironically last night ESPN Classics was showing a cage match from 1986 between Superfly Snuka & Greg Gagne vs Bruiser Brody & Nord the Barbarian where if the faces won Verne got 10 minutes in the cage with Sheik Adnan Al-Kassie.

Hell...if he has Alzheimer's related dementia, he may have thought he was in some wrestling match from his past. I wonder who he thought the 97 year old guy was?

Are you having a laugh? No way it's JBL vs. Taker at WM25. Shawn will definitely be matched with Undertaker. I do agree with you, however, on the Flair/Rourke vs Y2J/??? match. That would be sweet. But who in the hell wants to team with Jericho? Well, since JBL WON'T be wrestling Taker, maybe he will do it.
Who wants to team with Jericho? None other than the man that was originally supposed to star in The Wrestler... Nick Fucking Cage!

Rourke/Flair vs. Chris Jericho & Nicholas Cage! I smell the buyrate!

I think David Arquette is more likely than Cage if there's a tag match!

Although apparently some people think it may be Jericho vs Hogan if Rourke doesn't end up doing more than "attending" Wrestlemania. It could work in the current storyline.

Wrestled in the gimmick battle royal. Not sure, but he may have managed the Hardys for a Mania. May not have either though...

Just looking at the roster to the game... I understand the politics behind Savage not being on there... but where in the fuck is Steamboat??? I'm guessing you can't have Steamboat without Savage, but still... you've got Bam Bam and no LT...

Talk about politics, no Mick Foley. No Terry Funk either.
no Rose
Are you referring to "Playboy" Buddy Rose or "Ravishing" Randy Rose? :x

I'm sure there are politics behind Foley not being there. But why shuold Terry Funk be in the game? He was only in 1 Wrestlemania if I remember correctly.

Why?

With the way the card is shaping up, the tagline for this one should be "Been There, Done That!"

I mean is anyone really excited over the fact the Edge and Cena are going at it again? Or HHH/Orton, I mean it's only be what, 9 months since they feuded?

And I understand the logic between Taker and Shawn, but if HBK ends the streak, I am done with WWE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best match HHH ever wrestled.

He was in two, which is more than a lot of people in the game (Dusty, AA, Kamala).

No. Jim Neidhart was...

WWE dropped the ball with Cabana. He may not have the "WWE look" but the guy has more charisma than half of the roster combined. I don't see how they couldn't find a place for guy who can work in the ring, work the mic like he does, and knows the business...

Glad Triple H will be on tomorrow. Hopefully it's a good one. With HBK vs. JBL, and uh, Orton doing something, and uh, The King with the witty one liners. That is all.
