Man, last week I went to a guitar shop around here and they had a used Gibson Firebird. It was beautiful and I had been looking for a new dual humbucker guitar, not to mention that I've always wanted a Firebird. Pulled that fucker off the wall and sat down with it... and it played like SHIT. I was so bummed out. I've played those guitars before and they always seem to have the sweetest action. This one just sucked. Real stiff and cheap feeling. Gibson QC strikes again.

A real set up might fix that.

Did it have a bad finish or fretwork, or did it just play badly? I agree with Jim, a good setup can really turn thast around.

Maybe try and talk them down based on saying it plays like shit. If they offer to set it up, tell them you want them to give it their best setup and try it BEFORE you buy. If you buy on the basis of a setup after the fact they'll gloss it over, lower the bridge, and tell you that you have to settle for buxzzing frets if you want good action.

Fuck that shit! Let me see what your tech can do FIRST! Heyt, if I don't buy it, it will still sell quicker and for more with aq good setup.

Gibson can be spotty with their QC, but most of the time it isn't really anything a truss rod adjustment, height adjustment, intonation and fret dressing can't cure. Other than the fret dressing, anybody can do the other things easily.

Today I scored:

Duncan Jazz/Custom humbuckers (for my Les Paul)
Dimarzio Virtual Hot T (for my Esquire)
Fender hardshell case for my strat...

I've listed my JA-90 up for sale - just didn't use it as much as I wanted to.

I once tried a firebird which I believe was made in the 90's that felt like a total piece of shit. They must have used some cheap wood or something. It just didn't feel as solid as a vintage bird or even some of the more modern ones.

Just picked up a Digitech GSP 2101 Artist rackmount preamp with the Control One foot-controller. As usual, most of the presets are crap, but there are some beautiful sounds in this thing if you tweak it for a while. This is one of the best things Digitech ever put out, IMO.

I'm thinking that may be the case here. Like I said I've played several of them and it always made me want one cuz they just had a certain smoothness and playability. There was nothing a setup or adjustment could do to help this guitar. I've played 200 dollar jap guitars that felt better than that Firebird. Fuck it, I'll wait for the next one to come along.

I've sold a Rist and a Flying V. I'm thinking a PRS 245 Singlecut is sounding awfully good right now.

Anyone get anything cool recently?

Picked up one of these last week;

Haven't had time to burn it in.

My favorite pedal of the moment is a Boss MT-2 Metal Zone that I modded.
I did it as a goof and the thing hasn't left my pedalboard since.

Damn! Those are pricey. Great necks. I have a San Dimas Tele, but the DiMartini guitars feel a bit better. The same guy that painted Warrens does all of those!

I bought one of these:
Image

It's very cool, but totally unnecessary for my Krank Rev Jr. Stack.

I love the germanium treble boosters. They rock. I wish I could actually find a dallas Range Master Treble Boost, but I had a buddy wire an old school OC44 into a Rangemaster circuit. That thing KILLS!

It's the Frankenstein pedal on the board.
Image
I sold the BOSS and the Cheetah Scream, so I'm down to the Big Red Machine, the Frankenstein Treble Boost and the tuner.

I'm gonna sell the Jacques even though it's cool.

Definitely overkill for a Krank, huh?

I got a great deal on the DeMartini and the neck as you said is a thing of beauty. I love the hard rock maple. The RTM (Rattus Tonus Maximus) pickup sounds awesome. This thing screams through the Metropoulos 100W Plexi Super Lead I just built. Here's a gut shot:

I wish I was patient enough to build an amp. That's completely cool.

Yeah, the Mercer Box needs more of an 800 or Plexi tone to be fully functional. You can get something like a 30dB gain out of it too!
