Looks like the Angels are in for a rocky first month. Lackey and Santana will be on the DL for the first month, giving them a rotation of...Saunders, Weaver, Adenhart, Moseley and probably Loux. Who? Yeah, I know. Escobar may be back by the end of the month. He has a lot of question marks but he could be huge. By the end of may the Angels could have Lackey, Escobar, Santana, Saunders and Weaver, which could be the best rotation in baseball. Seriously.

The Angels are pounding the ball in spring training, for what that is worth. Some of the kids - Morales, Aybar and Wood (who unfortunately just went down to AAA) are looking really good and I think they have a decent chance to keep it up in the regular season.

The Padres...well, never mind. They'll have a spot ready in the NL West cellar. They could surprise, but the pitching staff (outside of Peavy and Young) is probably gonna be scary. Not the good scary, either.
This is why I expect Oakland to make things interesting a little. Anaheim didn't do anything to make their team better this offseason, with their competition.....or lack there of. They didn't need to.

I just think if someone in the West revamps, there will be a race. Last season ( which is why Pythag matters ), they overplayed their projections. There was no competition within the Division. They are fucking tough, but come a hell of a lot tougher with wins and losses with where the majority of their games are played.

As for San Diego. I see their Minor League team ALL THE TIME. Everytime they have someone who could make a difference, their gone. Cust, Barfield, Macanulty, etc. Regardless of how much they've talked about what they learned when Lucchino and Epstein were there. They have to give it time to blossom, it's not overnight ( Cashman that goes to you too ).

The As made big improvements to their offense, but their starters are a big question mark right now. Of course, their pitchers benefit from playing home games on a football field, which gives them a lot of foul territory. Still...if three of their pitchers turn out at least decent they'll be in the race.

I think that after a month or so to get settled in, the Angels offense will be better than last year's. Tex only gave 10 HR. Abreu will outperform Garret Anderson, and Juan Rivera should put up decent numbers. Napoli is gonna surprise some people this year and blossom into the leading HR guy on the Angels. My HR prediction for the lineup:

Figgins - 4
Kendrick - 10
Abreu - 22
Vlad - 28
Hunter - 21
Rivera - 19
Napoli - 32
Morales - 18
Aybar - 10

164 from the starting nine ain't bad at all, especially for the Angels!

It's interesting for sure, and kinda ironic at the same time. Teix behind Pujols is argueably the second best 1st baseman in baseball. His contributions were nil. I remember thinking "holy fuck" when Anaheim aquired him.

As for the team they'll be good no doubt. It leads me to a question though. This more about Scoscia ( sp, I know ). He's a brilliant tactical manager, but it hasn't worked as of late. Do you think he needs to change his approach to fit his current lineup, or is it just a case of bad luck?

I'm not accounting for the relief mishaps in the playoffs. It's Manny and Ortiz, these things happen. What brings me to this question is I read a manager's ranking. Using stat nerd stuff, and some of the guy's at the bottom were alarming ( Scoscia, Francona, Stengel (!) ). I don't know how to analyze it myself yet, so I can't really form an opinion. I still think the guy is a genius.

Which leads me to Pythag, their projections and Anaheim's surpassing them in a weak division. Do you think that Scohoweverthefuckit'sspelt should change his approach, because it's not 2002's team. Or have they just not gotten it done without his leadership? The Angels to me are a mystery, because they are tough. They're built to win a Championship. Something hasn't happened and I'm curious as to why. Under Mike ( fuck it I give up ) you would think it's a given. What's your opinion?

I don't understand that one. They basically picked up a 4th OF who has no defense, and a super-pinch hitter. He's only just going to bitch about his lack of playing time there.

I read somewhere that Dusty Baker was saying when he clears waivers, they were going to talk to him. Guess not.

sheff will have to have a complete makeover in order to fit in on a club
as a 4th of, pinch hitter.
who is he kidding?

i don't know the mets situation at all, but as a 4th of, sheff is probably not
a guy you want to count on.

it's not secret he wants to play everyday. if he does not get into enough games, how soon before he whines to the NY media??

So the first thing I said to Jake after the season ended last year was how I didn't trust Brett Myers and that I hoped the Phils would make a move to upgrade the #2. Thanks for not letting me down Brett.

Three motherfucking homeruns? Jebus.

MLB Extrainnings isn't starting till tommorrow so I couldn't watch the game. How long is Hammels out?

I got Myers on my other league's fantasy team ( no I didn't draft him ). Fuck. At least he had 6 strikeouts.

Should have been 4 dongs, someone missed by about 3 feet.

I think Hamels is only supposed to miss 2 starts at most. He's still throwing in Florida trying to get his location back.

Evidently comcast is giving 2 free weeks of extra innings, I picked a great time to be laid up.

Good for you mang.

I'm pissed it's not starting till tommorrow. I called them wanting to watch some fucking baseball, that's not exhibition or some shit. She's all "that starts on the 6th." There's two teams playing tonite Goddamnit.

Channels 470 through some higher number.

Matt Clement’s comeback has come to a close. The veteran pitcher informed the Blue Jays on Sunday that he plans to retire from baseball after spending the past three years attempting to return from right shoulder complications.

This gives me hope. I can't pitch, I'm not a pitcher. I've never been a pitcher.

Apparently we can all be pitcher's now.

87 Wins, 86 Losses, 96 ERA+ = $41,276,000 in Career earnings.

I'm gonna be rich!

All bullshit aside, I've watched Sheff chump at least a dozen balls that I honestly could have caught....And that's no shit.
I've had more great seats down the left field line then I can count and the dude had me screaming my nut's off every game, he's taken more plays off then anyone I've ever had the displeasure to watch.

Sheff makes Roger Dorn look like a full on hustler.

What a nice start to the season.

Tampa/Boston was rained out. Sucks, but what are you gonna do? So I immeadiately see who the MFY are playing. Baltimore? Fuck. CC vs. Guthrie? Fuck. One of the top pitcher's in Baseball against a guy who pitches for the Orioles. Fuck.

I run some errands, get home and it's 6-1. Nice. The MFY score some runs quickly and it's almost tied up. More runs Orioles! And that fearsome Baltimore bullpen pulls through in the end.

Fuck I love baseball.

Holy fucking shit what a game!!!

Emilio Bonifacio...who, you ask? Yeah, he plays 3rd base for the Marlins. He went 4-5, 3 singles, and a motherfucking inside the park home run. Jesus Speed Demon Christ, this guy has BLAZING speed! I think he's the fastest man in the league, and if he's not, he should be. And it's the first inside the park HR since Yaz did it in 1968. Good company, there. Oh yeah, he also had 3 SB's. AAAAANNNND he had some beautiful defensive moves. AND he got a curtain call! Welcome to Florida, Boni! :D :D :D :D :D :D

And Hanley got his first Granny today! (Also got a curtain call.) Jorge Cantu (Hip! Hip! Jorge!) and Jeremy Hermida also went yard.

Attendance was 34,423. It was just a fantastic day all around.

Weird to see the top flight pitchers get smacked around today. CC, Webb, Lee...heh heh heh...CC... :P

edited cuz I fucked up.

Cliff Lee was a fluke, I said it all year last year and I still think he's shit. Had an awful spring, can't say I was shocked.

As for CC... well, if you watched the game he just couldn't locate his fastball today. He didn't strike a single guy out. It happens, you just don't want it to happen in your first start for a team, on opening day no less. Can't win 'em all.

Jake, I'm watching the MLBN, and I did see that CC was all over the damn place, and his velocity was shit. And he owned up to it. He'll iron it out, I'm sure.

Aaaand they're throwing shit on the field at the Tigers/Jays game. Nice.

CC will be fine, but not the 11-2 fine he was in Milwaukee. Remember he was 6-8 prior to the trade.

I'm not sure I agree with you on Cliff Lee yet. In some ways it screams "Barry Zito" 2002 though. Lee posted an incredible 2008, exceeding all expectations. How?

The most easy answer is he added a new pitch to his repetoire ( a 2 seam fastball ), exhibited improved command, and induced more groundballs. Using Pitch F/X you can see the outcomes of his pitch selection. The possibilties are endless when looking at the data. I'm just begining to understand it myself. Mike Fast did a good analysis of him for THT I recommend.

His projections indicate the expected regression to the mean, but he'll be one of the better starters when he regresses. A sub - 3.00ERA after 200IP? That ain't gonna happen again, but he'll still be one of the better in the AL.

Expect his league average BABIP to remain at .300 With a slight drop in GB% 46.4 to 42 His ERA of course will rise and Strikeout and IP will lower. I just wouldn't right him off as a fluke yet.

Just read the Globe's staff predictions for the WS.
Interesting they all have the Cubs and none (shock) have the Yanks.
2 pick Cubs over Sox
2 pick Sox over Cubs
1 for Rays over Cubs and
1 for Cubs over Rays.

The fly-by jets flew over my house 3 times before heading for Fenway. Sweet.
Let the season begin. :D
