Mo will be the ESPN Sunday night conversation this week. A couple blurbs from the interview:
Mo was asked about Jonathan Papelbon’s statement (since retracted) that he would play for the Yankees.
“If he wants to do that, he’ll have to wait for me to retire,” Rivera said. “You know, then I think he has a shot at that. Besides that, he don’t have a shot at that.”
On PEDs: “The reason why I’m laughing is because I don’t even drink coffee. And if I don’t drink coffee, I would never put in my mind or think to put that in my body. If the talent that God has given me is not enough, well, I’ll have to quit. When I leave this game I know deep in my mind, deep in my heart that I was clean.”

The deal was: He elected not to have surgery a couple months ago and instead go through rehab(platelet injection).
Sadly that did not work and "boom", the elbow is done. There goes his '09 and 2010 season. Just unfair!!

CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Indians traded infielder Mark DeRosa to the St. Louis Cardinals for right-handed reliever Chris Perez and a player to be named later.
It's speculated that the PTBNL will be a high end prospect. Since Derosa was in the middle of most trade rumours. It will be interesting to see how this one plays out.
Per the Tacoma Tribune, Adrian Beltre will miss the remainder of the season following surgery for a bone spur on his non-throwing shoulder. USS Mariner concludes that the news essentially spells the end of the M's season.
Aside from the brutal schedule Seattle is on right now ( road games @ LAD, MFY, Boston. ) this spells the end of their season.
Beltre said he won't return for the last 4 weeks of the season and prepare for next year. He's a FA next season, and Scott Boras is his agent. I'm sure he's already got a 200 full color book ready on why Beltre should be paid 50m.

Was hoping the Mets would get DeRosa, but apparently the Indians weren't going to give him up for anything less than Parnell plus one or two more prospects. Oh well... at least Argenis Reyes is here to be the latest savior!

I can't think one team that couldn't have used DeRosa. It seems like every week there was a new one that was just about to trade a relief pitcher for him. I remember hearing talks with Epstein, Cashman, Minyana, Stoneman.......Sabu wrote:Was hoping the Mets would get DeRosa, but apparently the Indians weren't going to give him up for anything less than Parnell plus one or two more prospects. St. Louis came out of nowhere and got him IMO. I wonder what LaRussa will be able to get out of him.
FYI he went 0-3 with a BB today.

How about Mariano Rivera drawing a bases-loaded walk off K-Rod last night?
I think he was more excited for that than for notching save #500...
He is really going to be missed when he finally hangs 'em up...

He still uses that cutter to make the hitters look foolish. Great pitch to the mets catcher in the 9th.
Sweeping the mets was just what the doctor ordered. Off today and here comes a homestand after playing 9 consecutive games at N.L. parks

DeRosa is one of my favorite players and I have grabbed him the last 3 years in Fantasy. He needs one more game for 1b eligibility, with LaRussa I'm guessing he'll probably get it.killeverything wrote:CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Indians traded infielder Mark DeRosa to the St. Louis Cardinals for right-handed reliever Chris Perez and a player to be named later.

Yankees aquired Eric Hinske from the pirates today. Could be a good fit because he can play 3rd, 1st, LF and RF. Utility. Nothing wrong with added
depth.
No word on who the Yankees will send down to make room.

That's a good pickup, especially with Arod needing a day off here and there. He's a career .254 hitter, but hasn't lived up to his "percieved" potential since 2002 ROY. I gotta laugh at the one more Red Sox WS winner on the MFY roster ( 2007 ).
Who knows maybe it'll be another super-sub like Nick Swisher.
Re: Killeverything's (New)NeverEndingBaseballThread
Ever since the bad news about Nady again injuring his elbow, we had to add some depth in the OF. Hinske can play 3rd, so it's a good pick-up.killeverything wrote:Machado wrote:Yankees aquired Eric Hinske from the pirates today. Could be a good fit because he can play 3rd, 1st, LF and RF. Odds are the rookie Pena will be sent down. His glove is fine, but he can not play OF, so he has to go. He'll be back in Sept.

It looks like DC is no longer "thrillege town". Sean Burnett and Nyjir Morgan for Lastings Milledge and Joel Hanrahan. Seems like nothing for nothing to me. Lastings in the Gulf Coast League right now right?
If the reported rumors were true, remember they almost traded Manny Ramirez for Lastings Milledge, Mike Cameron and Aaron Heilman? Geez.
Oh and what the fuck is up with this Balitmore series? Last nite in the 7th, Mighty Red Sox up 9-1. Cool, I turn the TV off and go to get some chicken with the GF. I don't check or anything. Today I found out the O's came back to win 10-1
. Which is the biggest comeback in their history, second largest against Boston ( '92 against Toronto was the other time ), and first time a last place team overcame a deficit like that against a first place team.
Again what the fuck? Today after the usually dominate Beckett left down 5-1. It's the bottom of the tenth 5-5. Goddamnit, I got shit to do but I can't turn off the game.

I went to see L.A. Guns last night..... I was listening to the game on the radio while driving there, and the Sox are up 9-1, everything is swell, and the game goes into a rain delay. I go inside and see a kick ass show from Chicken and Jizzo..... I come out and turn on the radio to hear a final score of 11-10... I was totally like WTF?!?!killeverything wrote: Oh and what the fuck is up with this Balitmore series? Last nite in the 7th, Mighty Red Sox up 9-1. I thought they were gonna lose today, figuring Baltimore had all the momentum from last night.... again, WTF? - At least today that was a good thing......

Since June 21, Hanley's been playing out of his fucking mind. He's been hitting .450, with 24 ribbies. *boggle* I'm thinking he likes the 3 spot.
The gNats have a nice little pitcher in Jordan Zimmermann.
JJ had an uncharacteristic bad outing, went 3.1 innings, and 89 fucking pitches, with 4 walks and 5 hits, yet allowed only a run.
Today was Camp Day...16,000 screaming ankle biters at the ballpark. Eeeeesh.

Any truth to the rumor that they're going to rest him through the All-Star break because of his hip? Hopefully not -- I already started him this week despite the initial news of the injury, and line-ups in my league are locked until Monday!
Re: Killeverything's (New)NeverEndingBaseballThread
I saw the game yesterday and believe it or not, the 2nd base umpired made a terrible call with the "neighborhood play". The umps were 0-2 and the calls were not even close.
NEW YORK -- Derek Jeter's lengthy Major League career has featured many events on the playing field, but thus far, he has been able to avoid an ejection. Yet if he were tossed in the first inning on Monday, he might have been justified.
The Yankees' shortstop was thrown out attempting to steal third base in New York's 7-6 loss to Toronto, but it wasn't the call that rankled the captain. It was the reasoning he received from third-base umpire Marty Foster, who said that Jeter was out simply because the ball had beaten him.
"I was just baffled by the explanation," Jeter said. "I was told I was out, because the ball beat me, and he didn't have to tag me. I was unaware they had changed the rules."
Jeter had walked to lead off the home half of the first inning against Toronto left-hander Ricky Romero, and he advanced to second on a balk before attempting a steal of third. Catcher Rod Barajas' throw beat Jeter's headfirst slide, but television replays showed that Jeter might have moved his hands away from Jays third baseman Scott Rolen's tag.
"I just pulled my hands back and got called out," Jeter said. "I've seen everybody make mistakes on calls before, but I was baffled by the explanation."
Jeter immediately jumped up and confronted Foster, saying he hadn't been tagged by Rolen.
"He told me, 'He didn't have to,'" Jeter said. "I'm not making this up. This is what I was told."
Jeter said he was not yelling at Foster, but Foster's explanation led to an ejection for Yankees manager Joe Girardi, whose volume level grew considerably louder as he earned his third ejection of the season.
"Jeet's not going to argue unless he's safe," Girardi said. "That's the type of player that Derek Jeter is. I went out there and wanted an explanation, and I ended up getting tossed."
Jeter admitted that the Yankees have benefited from similar calls in the past, but he said he had never actually heard an umpire admitting to ruling a player out because the ball beat him.
"It bothers you if it's you, but if it works in your favor, you don't really mind it that much," Jeter said. "It happens. I just have never been told that before. It wasn't an argument, it was just that I didn't understand it."
Foster requested that crew chief John Hirschbeck handle discussing the play with reporters. Hirschbeck said that he would talk about the call with Foster on Monday or Tuesday, and he said that in the era of TV replays and increased media scrutiny, the microscope on umpires is larger.
"You have to make sure that you have a tag," Hirschbeck said. "It used to be if the ball beat you, you were out. It isn't that way anymore. It's not a reason to call someone out. You have to have a clean tag."
Hirschbeck added that, if Jeter's representation of Foster's on-field comments were correct, Jeter's confusion would have been understandable.
"In my 27 years in the big leagues, he's probably the classiest person I've been around," Hirschbeck said. "It would make his actions seem appropriate if that's what he was told."

Manny probably will get an ovation, more time has to pass first though. I figured the crowd would give Nomah props, he was the face of the franchise for a long time.Machado wrote:Did you cheer for nomar last night? Heard the crowd gave him a standing O during BP.

Time had to pass though. If I was there I woulda stayed in my seat. I remember Nomar being pissed about not getting Jeter money and turning down 4/60. I remember Nomar staying on the bench and pouting during the Arod/Arroyo/Varitek fight where, where both teams ran out and were actually fighting. The Sox came back from 9 runs down in the 9th. I remember Nomar staying on the bench the game where Jeter dove into the stands. I also remember winning the World Series when they traded him......something that wouldn't have and didn't happen with him.
Manny was a bigger part of the Mighty Red Sox history than Nomar. A couple of seasons pass and sure. Although if LA and Boston meet in the WS?

Re: Killeverything's (New)NeverEndingBaseballThread
Manny is HATED in Boston for the way he quit on the team, and proceeded to "shoot his way" out of town..... add to that, the fact that he's been exposed as a steroid guy.... he will be 100% booed. His treatment will make Damon's look like a warm reception.
I was at the game last night, and the ovation for Nomar was nice.... more than I was expecting to be honest. Nomar didn't leave town under the best circumstances either - it had become more and more obvious that Nomar didn't want to deal with the press and pressure of playing in Boston.... as he became more unhappy, he was more of a distraction to his teammates.... it came to a head in the game against the Yankees when he refused to even pinch-hit in a game that went extra innings. He was noticeably moved by the long ovation, and to his credit, he stood along the third base line signing a TON of autographs before the game.......

If more time passes though, I could maybe see Manny getting a warm response. Clemens' got an ovation when he was supposably playing his last game in 2003 at Fenway. Remember these were the same fans that "treated him worse than Hitler".bighairdiscs wrote:Manny is HATED in Boston for the way he quit on the team, and proceeded to "shoot his way" out of town..... add to that, the fact that he's been exposed as a steroid guy.... he will be 100% booed.
With Manny's statements that came out a little bit ago, "he loved Boston just didn't like the lack of privacy". Nomah shot his way out of town too. Speaking publicly that "JWH has a wire-tap on his phone, etc". I was happy to see him go and had grown tired of his shit by 2000.
With Manny and the pink-hats now, they'll cheer. Back in the day? No way in hell. It's a different fanbase. "Yay! The Green Monster! I mean Monstah!"
Re: Killeverything's (New)NeverEndingBaseballThread
manny is trying hard to ruin the dodgers season.
did anybody catch his "antics" last night vs the mets?
after being ejected, he tells the media he only planned to play 5
innings anyway. that was news to Torre.
Kruk on ESPN was all over manny last night for his outrageous behavior.
not sure if MLB will suspend him for his actions, but i would be happy if
MLB did.

NEW YORK -- Lenny Dykstra, the former star center fielder for the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, court records show.
Dykstra, 46, has no more than $50,000 in assets and between $10 million and $50 million in liabilities, according to a petition filed Tuesday with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Central District of California.
Jonathan Hayes, one of Dykstra's lawyers, had no immediate comment.
Dykstra's filing comes in the wake of some 20 lawsuits he faces tied to his activities as a financial entrepreneur, including The Players Club, a glossy magazine he had helped launch, according to published reports.
The bankruptcy petition shows several banks among Dykstra's largest unsecured creditors, including units of JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Bank of America Corp.
Known as "Nails" and "The Dude," Dykstra played for 12 years with the Mets and the Phillies before retiring in 1996 with a lifetime .285 batting average and 81 home runs.
He won a World Series with the Mets in 1986, and with the Phillies was runner-up in the National League MVP voting in 1993. The Phillies lost the World Series that year.
