After the Angels beat the Indians last night with a walk-off bunt by Howie Kendrick, Somebody Perez had this to say: "It was a bad baseball play that happened to work out," Perez said afterward. "I don't want to say it was bush league. But you never see that. Ninety-nine percent of hitters in that situation would rather win the game with a hit, not a bunt."
Ha ha, shut the fuck up. If your team had done it you'd be talking about how clever it was and that it was smart baseball. It was a smart play by Kendrick. He saw the infield for some reason was back - nice baseball sense, Cleveland, have the infield back with the winning run on third - and knew he was getting a good pitch to start the AB and that a bunt would put the pressure on to make a clean play. It sure as fuck surprised me!

I don't see the big deal. You're trying to outfox the other team. Who cares as long as you win?
That said, I'm not really sure where I stand on bunting against a guy who has a no-hitter going. Not totally related, but I can't decide if that's bush league or not.

I'm fine with a bunt to break up a no-hitter. A NH is a team effort all the way, and a bunt is legal. I look at if from the perspective of the team that is getting no-hit; fuck, I don't want that to happen! If I have to bunt to break it up, so be it. Baseball has a bunch of fast players who fairly regularly try to bunt for hits during "normal" games, so it isn't like they're pulling something out of their hat.

Bunting to win a game is fine. Bunting to break up a no-hitter is bush league. If a team is down 3-0 or 4-0 in the 9th with 2 outs and they send up someone to bunt for the sole purpose of breaking up a no-hitter when they have no chance of winning the game that is as bush league as it gets. If they are down 1-0 and have the first hitter bunt to try to get on to tie or win the game then it's a different story.

Bunting to win is fine. Remember the bad ass one handed bunt Oakland pulled against Boston in game 4 in 2003 ALDS? No one saw that coming. Bunting on a no hitter in the late innings is pretty Bush League. And should be retalliated against.
Speaking of walk offs Milton Bradley again, had a big late inning RBI 2B to pull ahead. Can't believe what I'm seeing with him.
Re: Killeverything's (New)NeverEndingBaseballThread
I saw this last night on ESPN. Some very harsh words for someone to say about a player:
NEW YORK -- Twenty-four hours after Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti called out his team -- and specifically, center fielder Matt Kemp -- on a Los Angeles radio show, the issue had picked up considerable steam before the team's game with the New York Mets on Wednesday.
Colletti told Tilden that Kemp's defense and baserunning were below average and wondered aloud whether Kemp's new contract -- a two-year, $10.95 million deal he agreed to in his first winter of arbitration eligibility after making just $467,000 last year, might have made Kemp a little too comfortable.
Kemp told reporters before Wednesday's game that his contract wasn't a factor in his play and pointed out that he works hard at his craft and shows up early to the ballpark on a regular basis.
Dodgers manager Joe Torre, who has often walked the fine line between blindly supporting players and publicly criticizing them, walked that line again.
"He is here early, and he gets a lot of work in,'' Torre said. "Again, that is physical stuff. A major part of this game is the mental part and being able to deal with failure. Most of us have an easy time dealing with success. But dealing with failure is important.''
"If they had a category for execution, we would be in the bottom half of that, too,'' Colletti said. "It is just time to get better. It is basically the same club with rare exceptions. We won 95 games with Manny [Ramirez] missing 50 of them, with one of our top pitchers in Chad [Billingsley] having a tough second half and with Russell [Martin] having a tough time. For me, it's all about presentation and effort. If those were up to the standard we set for the organization, and Joe sets as well, and we were still 8-12, then so be it.''
Colletti said he spoke directly to Kemp during the team's recent homestand about the same issues he spoke to Tilden about.
"I know I'm not seeing the same player I saw at the end of last year,'' Colletti said. "That might just be because it's early. But it isn't just Matt Kemp. I haven't seen it really across the board, with rare exceptions. This sport is comprised of individuals, but it is a team sport. ... I don't want to make this just about Matt Kemp. The Dodgers are 8-12.''
Colletti conceded that he probably will need to meet privately with Kemp regarding his comments to Tilden.
"He knows where I'm at, and I know where he is at,'' Colletti said.
Ned Colletti and Matt Kemp spoke briefly after the game about comments Colletti had made to a Los Angeles radio station the previous day in which he said Kemp's defense and baserunning were below average and wondered aloud whether Kemp might be too comfortable now that he has a new two-year, $10.95 million contract.
Colletti's comments came in response to a direct question from 790 KABC's Peter Tilden during Colletti's regular weekly appearance on Tilden's show Tuesday.
"I told him I didn't single him out, the same thing I told [the media] earlier," Colletti said after speaking with Kemp. "We had a five-minute conversation."
Asked if it was a two-way conversation, Colletti said it was. Asked if everything was fine between him and Kemp, Colletti simply said, "It's fine with me."
Kemp, who has been noticeably prickly with the media all season, declined to discuss his conversation with Colletti or even to acknowledge that it took place.
"I ain't got nothing to say about that," he said.
Kemp's agent, Dave Stewart, reacted with shock on Wednesday to Colletti's comments.
"When it comes time for Matt to arbitrate two years from now, we're going to look at that situation and do what's best for Matt," he said on The Mason and Ireland Show on 710 ESPN Los Angeles. "When it comes time for Matt to be a free agent three years from now, we're going to look at that situation in the same way as I would with Chad Billingsley, my other client on that ballclub.
Stewart was a right-handed pitcher for 16 years in the majors and was known for his intimidating presence on the mound. "This kind of thing in all the years I've been in baseball has never happened with any general manager on any team I've ever played on where you single out a player and you hold him accountable for the outcome of what 24 other players are doing as well," Stewart said. "There are 25 players on a team."
Pressed on the matter, Kemp spoke only cryptically.
"It doesn't matter to me," he said. "It's all good. People can say what they want to say. I just work hard and try to help this team win."

Well, consider what you said, and I do agree with you in a certain sense. If it's bottom of the 9th and two outs, and you have your speedster type at bat, isn't a bunt attempt a reasonable expectation? Also, if you pinch-hit with somebody who is mainly used as a pinch-runner, it can also be somewhat expected. And yeah, if your team is down by three or more runs at that point, it is bush. I think I was referring more to say a 6th/7th/8th inning attempt by somebody who does bunt for singles on occasion.

Question for Tawny or anyone else who follows the Marlins:
Any idea on when they're going to bring up Stanton? I drafted him in my Fantasy Baseball League (which is also a keeper league). I saw that he hit 5 HR in 2 games and 6 over his last 4 games down on the farm. I could use his help in my outfield...

Interesting Angels/Sox matchup over the next four days. Both teams just got swept and aren't looking too good, so each team is what the other is looking for. I think it will be a split. I think tonight goes to the Sox, and Saunders will get shelled. Watcha got, KE?

Since I ordered via Comcast, only 1-3 games per day are available on HD. I know Direct TV customers are able to watch every game in HD.
MLB Network is doing a great job so far airing games other than on Thus/Sat nights.

I'll try to do a series preview later if I have time. A quick skim produces this.tin00can wrote:Interesting Angels/Sox matchup over the next four days. Here are the Mighty Red Sox's numbers against Saunders .248/.314/.359/.673
Even though they're hitting better on the road than at home right now, that looks good for them.
Theo has stated that this season is a bridge year. One month is really to small a sample size to truly panic. Unfortunately they play in the same Division of a very good ( and hungry ) Rays, and the Steinbrenner All-Stars. Which basically fucks them in the long run.
Here's some month samples to illustrate my point:
July 2008: 11-13, finished 95-67
June 2007: 13-14, finished 96-68
June 2004: 11-14, finished 98-64
Two of those they won the WS, the other game 7 of the ALCS. Now I really don't think that's going to happen this season, but it's hard to believe they'll be sub.500 or hovering right around it all season.

Your favorite Yankees pitched another gem yesterday vs the white sox.
His fastball hit 94 many times. Probably 1-2 mph faster then previous starts.
The debate whether to "skip" Javy's next start and insert Hughes as the starter on Friday vs the sox is a good question.
Personally, I would like to think that Javy can work out his dilemma on the hill. Even vs the sox.

Hughes is the motherfucking man. The Sox offense is pretty weak right now. I would love to have them face Javy. The deal is I don't see why Girardi would mess with his rotation order this early in the season.Machado wrote:Kill-

Certainly Boston is more than capable of playing good ball. If this was the series they started to, they're not too much of a threat right now to warrant a change. September? Sure. May? Nope. Girardi may not be the brightest star in the sky, but he's not a fucking idiot.
Plus he's well aware of Boston's upcoming schedule. It sure as fuck ain't easy.

RED SOX ARE REALLY GOOD THIS YR. I SEE NO WEAKNESSES.
Javy Vazquez is a mental weakling. Anyone with any kind of baseball knowledge could have told Cashman that the guy cannot pitch in NY. You'd think 2004 would be the only fuckin proof needed. I guess not.
I predict he doesn't finish the season with the Yankees.

I figured more people would be talking about that beatdown the Phils offense laid on the Mutts and Santana last night. Howard very well not be as good allround as Pujols(no shit) But that dude is still a beast and he's looking more patient this year, not just pulling the ball. He's lost a lot of weight but none of his power. The cards will make it tough for them to get back to the WS though.
Re: Killeverything's (New)NeverEndingBaseballThread
santana is no longer an elite pitcher. the more fastballs he throws at 90 mph, the less differential between the change-up & fastball.dtmfs wrote:I figured more people would be talking about that beatdown the Phils offense laid on the Mutts and Santana last night. Re: Killeverything's (New)NeverEndingBaseballThread
I saw Lincecum pitch for Fresno. It was awesome, you knew then that you would be hearing about him in the majors soon.TawnyVonJagger wrote:(Thought I answered this before, I guess it didn't take? Sorry.) I haven't heard anything about it, but I would expect him to be called up sometime this season, and before September. I'd love to see him as well, he's pretty awesome. Glad you took notice.wickedsensation wrote:Question for Tawny or anyone else who follows the Marlins:
Any idea on when they're going to bring up Stanton? I drafted him in my Fantasy Baseball League (which is also a keeper league). I saw that he hit 5 HR in 2 games and 6 over his last 4 games down on the farm. I could use his help in my outfield...![]()
We're going tomorrow to watch The Freak put on a clinic. Looking forward to watching him do his thang.
Out of all AAA guys that made it, no one topped seeing King Felix as a 17 year old. You knew you were watching a guy who would become one the best pitchers in baseball. The kid was like 17 at the time. Unfuckingreal.

If only the 2009 Yankees could have put together a team with 100% homegrown talent like the 2004 and 2007 Red Sox; their championship would have been even more satisfying.
Too bad that the Yankees #3 and #4 hitters, which became the best hitting combo in baseball during the 2000's, were caught using steroids. FUCKIN CHEATERS. I wish they could be as clean and pure as the Red Sox roster.
GO RED SOX !!!
