Ties in football? The NFL has had only 17 ties in 43 years, and only 2 in the last 10 years. 32 team each playing 16 games a season for a combined 256 regular season games every season. So in 10 years 2 out of 2560 games have ended in a tie. So I guess 0.08% of the games ending in ties is a large amount. And for the record, not once since the AFL-NFL merger has a game ended in a 0-0 tie. The World Cup has had something like 8 ties already in roughly 30 matches.

And at least the NFL continues under regulation rules until there is a winner during a tie in their playoffs. Maybe after 1 overtime if they still have a tie they should just hold a Pass Punt & Kick contest so the soccer fans would be interested?

If the NFL operated a league system based on points, then I'm sure there would be draws. This is why there are draws in soccer. Also, they should have promotion and relegation so that the shitty Detroit Lions get punished for being a bad team, year in, year out. There's no punishment for failure.

Americans continue to warm up to soccer's biggest event, with ratings for the World Cup coverage on ABC and ESPN up 60% from the 2006 tournament (1.9 verage rating through Friday vs. 1.2 four years ago, despite the fact that most of the matches this year air in the morning). The Friday match between U.S. and Slovenia on ESPN was the most watched soccer game in the history of the ESPN networks among households, 3.9 million. In total viewers, it was the third most watched ever with 5.2 million. Not bad for a game that started at 10AM EDT/7PDT. The match featured an epic comeback by the Americans, who earned a 2-2 draw after trailing 0-2 at halftime, and a big controversy over the U.S. team's disallowed third goal. Most patriotic (or best in coming up with a good excuse to be late for work) were viewers in San Diego where the U.S./Slovenia match averaged an 8.5 rating.

Meanwhile, Mexico's Thursday match against France, which the Mexicans won 2-0, averaged 5.8 million viewers on Univision, the largest audience on the Spanish-language network so far this World Cup.

While the point of your post may be to prove that soccer is growing in the US, bragging about going from a 1.2 average to a 1.9 average is about as bad as bragging about your kid going from a 1.2 GPA to a 1.9..................

Look up the ratings of hockey sometime..you know, a "real" sport.

Up 60 percent in a less than desirable time slot is a HUGE improvement.

I can understand that. I don't give a shit about Tenis, Baseball (even though I played it in 6th grade), Basketball, Volleyball (lol), Golf, American "Football"...I just don't go out of my way to tell people how much I don't give a shit.

I don't why so many of you feel the need to start threads to let us all know how much "soccer sucks". Rachelle even started a thread about that in the gossip board. Yeah you guys don't dig it, we get it. Brakes my heart but hey, whatever.

sorry I ain't jumping up and down about the US soccer team, its good for them to play well, but it don't mean a lot to most sports fans in the US

they could win the World Cup and it won't make most fans here want to watch more soccer

I know, I know. I've been guilty of jumping in to odd wrestling, hockey, or basketball thread to just say how shitty those sports are. But generally speaking, I don't see the point in actually starting threads to try and make that point.

It always goes around in circles anyway... Americans say it sucks, the games end in ties, it's boring, and then Europeans say it's great and the rest of the world loves it. We get it.

Not giving a shit is one thing, but telling them "soccer is for girls" etc, etc, is really putting them down when you could be supporting them for actually playing well. I could understand it more if they sucked, seeing as America is all about winning.

Well nothing wrong with calling wrestling fans a bunch of faggots, they are.

And the ties... one of my favorite games ever ended up in a tie. Bayer Leverkusen vs Benfica 4-4.

My jaw dropped this afternoon when I watched Skip Bayless say and I quote "it takes a better athlete to compete in Nathans Hot Dog Eating Contest, than to race in the Tour De France." The idiot was being 100% sincere as well. I realize that he says things for shock value. I also realize that if you do not actively ride road bicycles, watching the tour de France would be akin to watching paint dry. However, what Skip said was just stupid and was an insult to every one of the racers. Skip could probably eat some hot dogs, but I doubt he could pedal 100 miles a day for a month. I was incredulous at his remark today.

My opinion of him wasn't particularly high prior to today, now it's too low to register. Calling him a "journalist" is an insult to those that go out and do some real reporting in the print medium.

Don't take this as me defending this Skip dude, but maybe what he means is that to be able to "train" your body to eat whatever the record is for hot dogs in 10 mins is more difficult than being in the Tour De France. I remember reading what Kobyashi eats during a day to keep his stomach stretched and yet not pile on the pounds, and being amazed.
