I want to say it was late 99 or 2000. I was tending bar at the Twisted Lizard on Armitage and Sheffield in Chicago. Probey was living in a brownstone about 2 blocks south of Depaul. His entire clan of inlaws was in from Toronto to celebrate the birth of his daughter a day or so before. this was 3 or 4 years after he had quit the booze and coke. Both his mother and father in-laws and 2 hot sister inlaws proceeded to get fucking hammered in my bar all afternoon for 3 straight days while Bob was at the hospital with his wife and newborn daughter. If your daughter was married to a self proclaimed addict, would you be out carrying on like that? What kind of influence could they have been besides that of enablers? I'm not saying addicts aren't responsible for their own actions, but fuck man. If someone is trying to clean their act up, I'm not going to act like THAT around the earner of the family while he's trying to stay sober for fucks sake.

That said, I'll take 45 years of living, achieving and having a good time all the time than 85 years of boredom.

RIP Probey...you were a great tipper and a funner guy. Thanks for being there for me when Chelly shed those fake tears when being traded to the Wings after swearing he'd never wear that sweater.
He's like the Liberace of bass & pot.

RIP Probie. That mofo could fight, AND score. Glad to hear he turned his life around, he was a hot mess for awhile there. And 45 is WAY too young.

RIP to one of the greats at what he did. He had a rare blend of skill and toughness that is almost unparraleled in modern hockey.

I truly hope he wasn't back on coke or speed, and this horrible tragedy was simply a result of his past, hard-living ways. He died in front of his kids.... SAD. :(

From TSN.ca:
The OPP has confirmed that former NHL enforcer Bob Probert has died of an apparent heart attack after being rushed to hospital with vital signs absent after collapsing on a boat on Lake St. Clair in Windsor, Ontario on Monday.

Probert was 45 years old.

Probert's father-in-law, Dan Parkinson, said at a news conference Monday that Probert had complained about "severe chest pain" around 2 p.m. before collapsing.

"This is a tragedy for the family," said Parkinson. "We ask that you respect their privacy at this time. This was totally unexpected. Bob lost the fight of his life this afternoon."

An autopsy will be performed on Tuesday to determine the official cause of death.

Windsor radio station AM 800 CKLW first reported that emergency crews performed CPR on the former Red Wings and Blackhawks' forward and then transported him to Windsor Regional Hospital where efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.

“This is a very sad day for Red Wings fans as we have lost one of the toughest players, best power forwards and all-around great guys who ever wore the Winged Wheel.'' former Red Wing and teammate Joe Kocur said in a statement. ''My favorite memory of Bob would be sitting down before a game, going over the opposing lineup and picking and choosing who would go first and if the goalie would be safe or not. It was great to be able to go out on the ice knowing that he had my back and I had his. He was like the brother I never had. My prayers go out to his family.”

The Blackhawks issued a statement Monday evening.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Probert family during this difficult time," said Blackhawks president John McDonough. "Bob will always be a member of the Blackhawks family and his memory will live on through our fans."

Red Wings owners Mike and Marian Ilitch also issued a statement.

"Bob was a part of our very first NHL draft class that also included Steve Yzerman, Joe Kocur, Petr Klima and Stu Grimson. Bob was always there for his teammates and was one of the toughest men to ever play in the NHL. He also was one of the kindest, most colourful, and beloved players Detroit has ever known. We are very saddened by his passing and our thoughts and prayers go out to Bob's family."

One of the most feared fighters in the history of the NHL, the Windsor native scored 163 goals and added 221 assists and whopping 3,300 penalty minutes in 935 career NHL games.

While Probert's bouts with the likes of Tie Domi and Marty McSorley were legendary, he was also an incredibly skilled player who played in the 1988 NHL All-Star game. A star on the ice, Probert battled his demons off the ice, including well documented problems with the law as well as alcohol and substance abuse. He also spent time in an NHL-supervised substance abuse treatment center.

The Red Wings family were shocked by his passing.

"It's very sad, very, very sad," Red Wings vice president Jim Devellano told the Detroit Free Press. "He was a pretty popular player in Detroit in the '80s, and certainly one tough guy with a lot of ability. But unfortunately we never got 100% out of him because of his off ice problems."

"We did everything," Devellano said. "I don't think there was a player I ever worked harder on, tried harder on to get his off ice life turned around."

Probert is survived by his wife and four children.

Let's get Moggio in here to offer some of his medical expertise on how his drinking and cocaine problems did not contribute to his early death.

Frank wasn't a fan of organized sporting activity so Moggio will likely shun this thread.

His 2 minute plus fight with McSorely is legendary. His revenge KO of Semenko,(Semenko had jumped him from behind in a game a month or so earlier),was a classic also. He was more than just fists however, he could score( he had a 29 goal season) and made an all-star game. His penalty shot goal against the North Stars will forever be part of Red Wing folklore. He also occasionally wore the "A" while with Detroit, alluding to his leadership skills.

Sadly, the last time he was on the ice in a televised setting was this :

-not the way I want to remember him.

Tie Domi just did a wonderful interview with the Score here in Chicago describing the insurmountable pressure that comes with being THE guy every young player in the league guns for when trying to make their bones in the NHL. Apparently he and Probie had done some kind of exhibition called Battle of the Blades together that was a tremendous success in Canada. Domi couldn't stress enough how great of a guy Bob had become after falling off the wagon 7 or 8 years ago. He'd really turned it around. If toxicology reports come back negatively, it'll be a real sad end to his story.
He's like the Liberace of bass & pot.
