Angels get Haren for Saunders plus prospects. Wow, did that come out of the blue! I had no idea. I like Saunders a lot and I hate to see him go, but this looks like a good trade.
Rumor has it the Angels are still working to get another bat. They would be well-served by dumping Matsui, trading Rivera for whatever they can get (bullpen prospect or two?) and moving Abreu to DH (like Matsui, he's untradeable) and bringing up Bourjos from the minors for the OF.

"Love the game, and the game will love you back." - Andre Dawson. What a great speech by Hawk. Congrats to him and the other inductees...Doug Harvey (aka GOD) and Whitey Herzog. Good stuff.
And get this, sports fans...Jorge Sosa bends, but doesn't break, and pitches 2 innings and gets the win today! (Hip hip Jorge?) ANOTHER walk off (Yay Uncle Wes!) win, and 4th walk off THIS WEEK! Crazy fuckers.

Too bad a team can build smartly and compete but then can't hold the team together after a couple of seasons when players start to become free agents. Just one more case for MLB having a salary cap.demolition23 wrote:San Diego Padres...

See Expos, Montreal for proof of this. We had the best scouting and development system by far. However, we couldn't keep the team together past players becoming arbitration eligible, let alone free agents.
It's not all about a salary cap, but meaningful revenue sharing. When teams like the Expos, Royals, Pirates, etc. can only get $250 K a year for their broadcast rights on local TV and radio, and the Yankees can get $250 million, and the money isn't pooled, you have a recipe for trouble. Solution = revenue sharing with an obligation that the teams receiving payments must use X% of the $ on player salaries (as opposed to executive bonuses, etc.). Everbody wins that way; the players keep salaries up and you have a league with true parity.

Re: Killeverything's (New)NeverEndingBaseballThread
Salary caps and revenue sharing go hand in hand. Otherwise teams in bigger markets would still find ways to get revenue streams that aren't subject to sharing and use them on salaries. I'd like to see a cap with a floor along with shared revenues that forced teams to all be in the $90M - $120M range along with something like the Larry Bird rule that let teams keep home grown HOF'ers for their entire careers. I'd also like to see the end of the guaranteed contracts so that non-performing players could be cut(with cap ramifications, of course) The NFL is closest to having a revenue sharing & cap system that really works.WOLF wrote:See Expos, Montreal for proof of this. Jon Miller in the Hall of Fame is a joke.
Bill King should be in the Hall before Jon Miller.
Did Jon score extra points because he was a broadcaster for the O's?
Or did he score points because he has been brutally televising ESPN Sunday night games for 20+ yrs?

It's probably because he hasn't gone on any kind of a killing spree after so many years of having to listen to Joe Morgan.

Yeah, you gotta give a guy props for that. I think everyone who has listened to Joe Morgan has wanted to kill either themselves or someone else afterward.Facedown wrote:It's probably because he hasn't gone on any kind of a killing spree after so many years of having to listen to Joe Morgan.

Garza tossed a no-no last night. 5th no hitter thrown this season. And still more than 1/3 of the season left to go. I wouldn't be surprised to see 1 or 2 more. All those warning track outs that would have been HR's a few years ago add up.

Sweet, a Halladay, Oswalt, Hamels 1-2-3 is pretty damn good. If this officialy gets done and Brown can play Solid The phils should be able to surge past the braves and take the division again, especially when Utley gets back. Man if only they hadn't went on that terrible slump.WhiteHouseSubsAC wrote:Oswalt to the Phillies for JA Happ and draft picks pending official signing and league approval.
WTF is up with Werth though? it's obvious they won't be able to sign him, why not trade the guy and get something back? Francisco has some pop and can fill in until victorino gets back then they can move brown to right.

Re: Killeverything's (New)NeverEndingBaseballThread
I agree...I'd like to see them trade for another stud OF that ISN'T a FA at the end of the year. It's complicated but it's within the realm of possibility. The real issue with keeping Werth is what happens when Victorino is back. If Dom Brown's night last night is any indication, he deserves to play every day. However, Ibanez has been hot since the AS break and they're not gonna pay Werth to sit on the bench.dtmfs wrote:Sweet, a Halladay, Oswalt, Hamels 1-2-3 is pretty damn good. Congrats to Dan, he passed Mike Lowell on the all time Marlins HR list.
Giancarlo Cruz Michael Stanton is a fucking beast as well. Logan Morrison. Gaby Sanchez. Oh yeah babe, this team is going places! If not this year...goddamn BP blew 19 saves so far this year. But things are coming along nicely now, except for Hanley. WTF, dude?! His bat's colder than a witch's tit in Antarctica.

A hot start can make a big difference in how players are perceived for the rest of the season. However, many times these same stretches occur in the middle of the season and may go unnoticed. A miniscule season ERA or a batting average above .400 for a couple of months at the start of the season makes fans take notice. Ubaldo Jimenez had a red-hot first two months, and thanks to a flashy 10-1 record and a 0.78 ERA through the end of May, he earned the start for Charlie Manuel's NL All- Stars. However, if Jimenez's hot streak had come in June and July rather than April and May, would he getting the same amount of Cy Young talk? Here are the best pitchers from the first two months of the season, based on allowing opposing hitters the lowest OPS. (We’ll abbreviate Opponent On-base percentage Plus Slugging percentage as OOPS)
April/May OOPS Leaders
Pitcher Team Wins Losses ERA OOPS
Ubaldo Jimenez Rockies 10 1 0.78 .482
Jaime Garcia Cardinals 5 2 1.32 .542
Jonathan Sanchez Giants 3 4 2.90 .549
Matt Cain Giants 3 4 2.50 .558
Phil Hughes Yankees 6 1 2.70 .562
Roy Halladay Phillies 7 3 1.99 .570
Adam Wainwright Cardinals 7 3 2.28 .571
Josh Johnson Marlins 5 2 2.19 .574
Doug Fister Mariners 3 3 2.45 .580
Gio Gonzalez Athletics 5 3 3.54 .583
Now, let’s look at the best pitchers in the last two months:
June/July OOPS Leaders
Pitcher Team Wins Losses ERA OOPS
Trevor Cahill Athletics 6 2 2.88 .531
Mat Latos Padres 6 1 1.76 .531
Josh Johnson Marlins 5 1 1.26 .547
Gavin Floyd White Sox 4 3 1.75 .549
Felix Hernandez Mariners 5 4 2.45 .552
Stephen Strasburg Nationals 5 2 2.32 .559
Vincente Padilla Dodgers 3 2 2.12 .562
John Danks White Sox 7 4 3.45 .570
R.A. Dickey Mets 5 4 2.19 .586
Brett Myers Astros 5 3 3.00 .588
Regular baseball fans know about many or most of the players on the first list. Players like Jimenez, Roy Halladay, Adam Wainwright, and Phil Hughes got off to great starts, earning them attention. These great starts stick in your mind. It's human nature. But maybe the more interesting names are the guys on the second list. Did you know that over the last two months, Mat Latos and Trevor Cahill are the top two pitchers in the league in opponent OPS? Did you know Gavin Floyd had the second best ERA over June and July, behind only Josh Johnson? In the last couple of months all of these pitchers have pitched at an exceptional level, just like the guys who did the same in the first two months of the season. But there's no question that it's still the players on the first list that are getting the most attention.

Looking forward to seeing him shunned by the HOF, along with Barry and Mark McGuire. It will be interesting to see, in years to come, how MLB will explain that the all-time hits leader, and many of the all-time home run hitters, are not in the HOF.Machado wrote:
