Kevin Youkilis out for the rest of season
An MRI performed in Cleveland on Thursday confirmed a tear in a muscle in Youkilis' right thumb, finishing the team's most consistently productive hitter for the season. He will have surgery to repair the tear in Cleveland on Friday.

Angels get swept in Baltimore. That'll put a capper on the season.

I don't think I've ever seen a team have as many injuries as this year's Red Sox:
Beckett
Youkilis
Martinez
Varitek
Pedroia
Cameron
Ellsbury
Tazawa
Buchholz
Lowell
Delcarmen
That's the #2 & #4 starters, the RH set-up man, a spot starter/long reliever, starting 1B, 2B, CF, LF, C, backup C, and backup 1B/3B/DH. That's 40% of the roster. And a good portion of these injuries have been extended DL trips with broken bones or torn ligaments. Theo did the right thing by not making any major trades because there is no way this team can stay in the pennant race with all the holes in the lineup.

Phillies 2010 Disabled List:
Brad Lidge (twice)
Jimmy Rollins (twice)
Placido Polanco
Chase Utley
Ryan Howard
Jamie Moyer
JA Happ
Ryan Madson
Joe Blanton
JC Romero
Carlos Ruiz
Shane Victorino
That's the whole starting infield, 1 starting outfielder, 3 of the 5 starting pitchers and the top 3 bullpen guys.
Injuries happen to all teams. The good ones suck it up and find a way to win.

Ouch.
Any time Tek goes down though, the team seems to go with him.

I did laugh at everyone there crying about how none of their 'regular' posters won anything. I've been reading that blog for like 3 years or so, I just never really post because most of the 'regulars' are a bunch of mo-mos.

The BBWAA just won't let them be on the first ballot ( well Pettite doesn't deserve first ballot status ). The only saving grace for them is they admitted it. I think that will go a long way in the voting.
Mcgwire? No. Barry Balco? No. Clemens? Nope.
Plus the whole MFY mystique will certainly be in their favor with the Veteran's committee ( see non-HOF player/HOF'er Phil Rizzuto who was let in by the Veteran's committee because he played with Dimaggio ).
Jake, congratulations on your ball. Wow.
Which brings up the same rhetoric. Who is the worst GM in baseball?johnk5150 wrote:Carlos Zambrano throws 95 pitches and 49 were strikes. Ladies and gentleman, put your hands together for you $140 Million Chicago Cubs!

Ed Wade or Jim Hendry?
Pinnella is retiring after this season too. It don't think their record is his fault at all. Just as I don't believe the Mariners' is Don Wakamatsu's. Who was fired yesterday.
If your GM gives you shit, what are you gonna do?
I still think Jack Z in Seattle's FO is a fucking genius.

very entertaining scene.johnk5150 wrote:Was there some kind of big rivalry between St. Louis and Cincinnati before what happened last night?
brandon phillips spoke very unkindly about the city of st. louis and the baseball team the on Monday.
before his first at-bat on Tuesday, like most hitters saying hello, he used his bat to tap the catcher on the shin guards.
the cards catcher kicked the bat away and then the verbal exchange began.
did anybody see the reds starter cueto kick a couple cardinal players with his spikes?
reports are he struck larue in the head/face.
video clearly shows he also kicked carpenter in the back with his spikes.

What Machado said. I also think it's the fact that since their WS win in the 90s, the Reds have been bottom dwellers for some time. Anytime a team goes to face a Division leader, their more fired up. So to speak. Oh well it makes for good baseball. The NL is having a hell of a season.johnk5150 wrote:Was there some kind of big rivalry between St. Louis and Cincinnati before what happened last night?
Like this.
Who woulda thunk that Ryan Dempster would beat Tim Lincecum? Or the Chicago offense would be able to touch him up for more than one run?

As far as baseball fights go, last night's tilt between the Reds and Cards was pretty good - especially since a pitch hadn't even been thrown!
Phillips is an idiot though. If he wants to take jabs at the Cards, fine. They're in a heated race and a little gamesmanship never hurt anyone (though I wouldn't be giving St. Louis bulletin board fodder myself). However, being a fuckin' hypocrite, and tapping Molina's shin guards because "it's part of his ritual" is just stupid. You hate a team and express it very publically - shut up and play ball and don't make nice 5 minutes later.

Last night on Baseball Tonight, Kruk took the same stance as you did.
Play the game. Don't pretend to be friends after bashing the team/city they play in.

To the surprise of no Angels fans, the Angels were shut out last night by a junk-ball throwing pitcher who came into the game with a post-7 ERA. His last win was over a year ago...against the Angels. It was ugly.

It's the "job for life" mentality. MLB doesn't have the stones to get rid of bad umps, and if they try the union will fight them on it.tin00can wrote:How is Joe West still an umpire? That fat piece of shit is beyond horrible.
The solution is to make umpires at-will employees of MLB, standardize the way they call the game, rate them, and replace the bottom 5-10% of them every year.
Then use instant replay for everything except balls & strikes. Give each manager 2 challenges so the games don't end up being delayed excessively.

Why? Because the NFL practices that ridiculous rule?
A play in the 1st inning can be just as important as a play in the 9th or extra inning game.
I am sick and tired of hearing that a manager can only challenge once or twice a game. Plain stupid.
Of course MLB needs to have a replay system in place(minus balls and strikes).
The year is 2010. The technology is there.
If MLB had 1 "dedicated" umpire in a booth similiar to the space where tv/radio broadcasters are seated, that is great positioning.
Allow that "umpire" to signal to the umpires that a call is in question and will be reviewed.
End of story.
It's that easy.

They could still have someone in the booth calling for replay on calls similar to the NFL, but they can't give managers an unlimited amount of challenges because some of them are the type that would argue every call.Machado wrote:Screw having a pre-determined number of challenges per game.SkyDog112046 wrote:It's the "job for life" mentality. I disagree.
Why is it that a league will apply a new rule, but then ask for the rule to be practiced in moderation??
SENSELESS!!!
Have you heard or heard of the study ESPN conducted over a 2 week span?
Approx 20% of the calls made my umpires were incorrect.
An average of 1.3 "closed calls" came into play per game.
By those numbers alone, I can't see a manager protesting call after call.
Did you see the triple play the mariners turned vs the a's a week or so ago?
Now that play would certainly be eligible for a replay.
What I can't see is a runner being throw out by 1/2 a step and then watching the manager "protest" that call.
If he does, tell him to shut the fuck up and sit down.

I still don't think it would happen. The Umpire's Union would have a fucking fit, if they were called out on how incompetent most of them are. Their already having issues with the amount of cameras and replays, showing the exact same thing.Machado wrote:I disagree.

I saw Buster Olney on ESPN last night discussing the ESPN survey and when/if replay will be expanded, etc...
His comment was so pathetic, but obviously true.
MLB won't change anything until there is a very embarrassing incident in the playoffs or world series.
Again, MLB will react instead of acting.
Just no excuse for that lack of action.
Wasn't there a very critical error, embarrassing moment when the tigers hurler lost his chance at a perfect game?
If replay was in place, the play would have been correctly changed and everybody would have left the field happy.
Furthermore, the umpire(Joyce) would have not suffered the humiliation, death threats, and emotional stress that he endured because the wrong call was never changed.

Manager Lou Piniella joked about the expensive delicacy to clubhouse man Tom Hellmann before the game, saying: "Hell, if we were in first place, we'd have a chef from France in here."

Bobby Thompson passed away the other day. I forgot to post about it.
Baseball great Bobby Thompson passed away Monday at his home in Savannah, Georgia. He was 86. Thompson hit one of the most famous home runs ever in baseball history. It clinched the 1951 National league pennant for the New York Giants, and also was one of the most famous calls by a radio announcer. That home run came up in conversation during our Common Wealth, Common Wisdom project last summer. Teen and senior producers were paired up, exploring the concept of entrepreneurship during the Great Depression, and today’s Great Recession. Kolby Weaver pitches for the Canton High School baseball team, and he's been a fan of the sport for as long as he can remember. From an era of steroid scandals and millionaire celebrity players, Kolby looks back to a time when the Dodgers still played in Brooklyn, and baseball was more than just a game.

Strasburg is hurt again. Could the Nationals be mishandling him and rushing him due to them needing a draw? I know he has great stuff but he went through the minors very quickly, or what would seem to be too quickly for a pitcher to adapt to throwing so many innings.
I know there is a stat out there that shows if you increase a young pitchers innings by more than something like 50 innings a year that they tend to break down and have a short career. Is this kid being overworked?
