Iraq vs. Stimulus .. Which Cost More?

Post by Nevermind »

•Obama's stimulus, passed in his first month in office, will cost more than the entire Iraq War -- more than $100 billion (15%) more.
•Just the first two years of Obama's stimulus cost more than the entire cost of the Iraq War under President Bush, or six years of that war.
•Iraq War spending accounted for just 3.2% of all federal spending while it lasted.
•Iraq War spending was not even one quarter of what we spent on Medicare in the same time frame.
•Iraq War spending was not even 15% of the total deficit spending in that time frame. The cumulative deficit, 2003-2010, would have been four-point-something trillion dollars with or without the Iraq War.
•The Iraq War accounts for less than 8% of the federal debt held by the public at the end of 2010 ($9.031 trillion).
•During Bush's Iraq years, 2003-2008, the federal government spent more on education that it did on the Iraq War. (State and local governments spent about ten times more.)

While you are at it, why don't you take a look at this report from the Wall Street Journal on how much our spending baseline has increased in 31 months ... $4.4 trillion

The stimulus didn't kill anybody. Hard to put a price on that. The repubs will use it as a campaign issue, and it will win them points with the voters, but the truth is, McCain would have done the same thing. The only difference would have been the flavor of the pork.

Not every cost comes with a dollar sign.

They call a tax cut a "cost" because it adds to the deficit. Tax cuts are called "budgetary costs" when they are tacked on to the deficit.
Wow. Nevermind opposes tax cuts now.

Nevermind got his name because he never had a mind. Dude can't catch a break, but he doesn't really deserve one anyway.

I've seen soap dishes that were smarter.

As for this,

•Iraq War spending was not even one quarter of what we spent on Medicare in the same time frame.

That's why we need single payer, dumbass.

It ain't rocket science.

Yeah, but what does Stiglitz know? He's only won, what, a Nobel Prize? No way can he refute the arguments of the mighty Randall Hoven, author of such blistering reports as "No WMDS? Really?" and "Another reason to hate France".

Fuck Stiglitz. Hooray for Hoven!

Not to comment on the current topic, but Yasir Arafat won a Nobel Peace Prize, so that mark of acclaim itself is a little tarnished. Just sayin'...

Okay, NOW to comment on the topic: The stimulus and the election of Obama in general saved the economy from collapse based on the psychological factor of which politician engendered confidence in the economy or in his ability to handle the crisis. That was Obama, who demonstrated an understanding that things were really fucked, and the confidence to take the problem on. McCain, demonstrated a cluelessness that would have taken us down the drain.

Plus, the stimulus was necessary and its costs were applied to this whole country. The Iraq War was not necessary and was applied to a relatively small territory in the Mideast, over much more time.
